VO friendly timer on IOS devices that will play a sound of the user's choosing at regular intervals

2013-10-30 Thread Kimberly thurman
Hello all:

The subject line states what I’m looking for. I have a friend who is a
massage therapist and she needs to change parts of the body at 3 minute
intervals, and needs this to run for an hour. She is also hearing impaired, so
she needs to be able to choose the sound that is emitted at each 3 minute
interval.

All suggestions are really appreciated.

All the best,

Kim

Chris, I agree completely! The BARD app rocks! I remember the good old days
(NOT) of those huge record players and those scratchy records, not to mention
the twisted and broken cassette tapes, so this is cause for dancing in the
streets, as far as I'm concerned! :)

Way to go NLS!!!

I absolutely love the app!! I think the library did an awesome job, and you

And just as mentioned previously, you are able to browse the BARD site right
 from within the app itself!

In the Get Books tab, just flick to browse and double tap. You will be put
right on the Main page of the BARD site!
You can then search for whatever book or magazine you would like.

True, you can not download books while browsing, but just add them to your
wish list while browsing, then when you are done, just go to your wish list
and download whatever book you want.
I do hope they introduce control gestures for playback in the future
releases, but for the first release, totally awesome job!!

I do plan on contacting BARD and just saying thank you for the app, and
letting them know the great job they did.
Sometimes I think we should just take a moment and show our appreciation for
all of the time and effort that was put into something. We can always find
improvements that might be made, but a simple thank you and great job should
 never be forgotten!

My hat is off to NLS for a job well done!

Tom, since the iDevices don't have external storage capability, I imagine
users will have to manage the available storage built into their device. A
BARD book takes about 10.4MB per hour of recorded audio so a 10-hour book
takes 104MB of space. If you load up your device with a lot of books, your
space will run out. I suspect the app will work in such a way that letting
the NLS store the books and the users grab them when they need them will be
how most folks will manage this. With more and more things moving to the
cloud, the days of downloading everything to your local PC or to an external
 memory device are numbered.

As for the battery this is not so easy since iDevices all have built-in

 positioning and lighting.

Today we received through the post something in a largish cardboard box. I
got my partner to cut an inch square rectangle in the centre of the smallest
side. I left the flaps that opened to allow one to empty the box and placed
the box on the other smallest end. I know this isn't clear and will explain
further if anyone is interested, but for now, I just want to show that
home-made ideas can work for reasonable OCR apps.

I placed a paperback book open inside the box, facing up toward the hole
previously cut and placed the phone so that the camera was positioned over
this hole. Prizmo was already launched so I just chose text then camera
and once I heard auto focused I gave the command to take picture.

Because the box was dark, helped by the keeping of the flaps, the flash
automatically was enabled and the below is the result. This is an OCR of both
pages shot at once. Not, perhaps, perfect, but quite acceptable IMHO.

 Subject: VOICE-OVER KEYBOARD BUG!

 Hi all,

I think I've found a rather bad keyboard bug, unless my phone is acting up.

To ensure I wasn't wasting bandwidth, I've already removed everything from
the switcher and rebooted my phone before trying this again and havfe got the
 same results.

Basically, whether in touch typing or standard mode, going to the row of
characters below the numbers just gives me clicks. The only way I can
produce these is from memory and then, once the key has been tapped and my
finger has been removed, I can hear the result of what I've just typed.

This also appears to be the cdase on the Emoji keyboard. Effectivfely this
means that you cannot slide your finger around to find the punctuation/symbol
 you need to type.

It seems we've found quite a number of bugs today. Perhaps some of us need to
get together, compile the list and then send to Support together, to add
numbers and weight to what we're saying.

However if you are traveling about and don't have access to your iTunes on

have a jawbone ERA but really want something for both ears when playing
music and movies that has awesome sound quality. I am also searching for a
good Bluetooth keyboard that is compact and could fit in a purse and or
handbag. I used a case keyboard thing for about 2 years and I just think it
makes the phones to bulky. Also I really need something with all the keys

Re: iPhone 5

2012-09-14 Thread Kimberly thurman
Thanks Les. I will use that tip to check and see how much data we use. I
suspect you're right, and I probably barely use a gig a month. I just wanted
to make folks aware that they would be losing their unlimited data. I also
realize that Sprint's unlimited data probably really isn't unlimited because
it's so slow. Decisions decisions! :)
On Sep 14, 2012, at 12:08 PM, Les Kriegler wrote:

 Hi Kimberly,

After reading your message, I contacted Verizon to verify what you heard.
You are correct; the unlimited data plan will go unless one pays full retail
for the iPhone 5. However, before making any decisions, I would recommend
you check your data usage on all of the phones on your plan. You can get
that information in a text message by typing pound data and send from your
phone. You may be surprised at what yo learn. For instance, my wife and I
use less than a gigabyte per month by quite a bit. A 2 gigabyte plan for
data usage would cost us $10 less than we are paying now. If we opt for a 4
gigabyte plan, we'd be paying the same as we are now. So in summary, I
encourage you to check your data usage before running off to another carrier.

Re: Jawbone Jambox

2012-09-04 Thread Kimberly thurman
My suggestion would be for you to go to amazon.com and read all about them. I
just ordered the smaller one, so I don't have much to say on the matter yet.
They are bluetooth speakers that work well with the I devices and as speakers
for laptops that are equipped with bluetooth. The smaller one is anywhere from
$165 to $199 depending on which color you choose, and the bigger one is about
$100 more.

Re: Linking IPhone To Cordless Phone

2012-09-04 Thread Kimberly thurman
I really do not love talking on a cell phone due to the sound quality. For
this reason, I have a Magic Jack, which has its own set of quirks, but works
well most of the time. For the price of less than $2 a month, who can argue,
especially since now you don't even have to have it plugged into a computer,
just the router. I love my iPhone, but don't love having long phone
conversations on it. I do appreciate the thread on this subject, as I had
wondered about these cordless phones that double as bluetooth handsets.

another call. The call is still on your iPhone and is using up airtime, the
cordless phone is nothing but a Bluetooth handset in this case. It's like
those cordless phones you can get which in addition to being connected to
your landline are also connected to your router and allow you to answer and
 make Skype calls.

As for your question, Tara, in my opinion there is no real advantage in such
phones except that you can leave your iPhone lying around or plug it in and
still walk around while you make a call or answer a call. I'd rather keep my
iPhone in my pocket or on my belt, that way I can answer a call just the
same, I can use SIRI to make a call, quickly set a timer when I'm in the
kitchen or immediately get an incoming text message. Maybe Shelley can
answer this, but I doubt you can listen to a text message on the cordless
phone and I'm not sure if you can activate SIRI with it. I haven't had a
landline at my house for 3 years or so and find it very convenient. One
other thing to keep in mind with so many wireless devices nowadays is that
the more you have the greater the chance for the various signals to
 interfere with each other.

Re: Linking IPhone To Cordless Phone

2012-09-04 Thread Kimberly thurman
A lot of that depends on the speed of your internet connection and, yes, the
Magic Jack connection has improved. Rarely, I will get a connection that
sounds choppy, but hanging up and redialing usually fixes this. Compared to
talking just over the cellular connection on the iPhone, I think it souns
wonderful, and I've never had problems dialing in account numbers using the
keypad on the regular cordless phone.

bought some international minutes and tried to make a call to a friend in
Germany he couldn't hear me at all. I called him back on Skype and it was
like he was sitting in my head. Everytime I want to make a longer call I use
the headset that comes with the iPhone and find the call quality is very
good at least 9 out of 10 calls, sometimes it's not, but it's so rare that
it's not an issue just as sometimes on Skype the quality is not so good, but
most of the time its excellent.

Re: Scanning With Digit-Eyes

2012-07-25 Thread Kimberly thurman
I would like to add that this does take patience, but it's worth it. I have
certainly gotten better at it with experience. I've also used the technique of
pressing the camera lens directly the seam on a can of soup. Then, slowly
back it away until you hear the beep and feel the vibration. Make sure there
is light in the area and you are not blocking it from the item.
On Jul 25, 2012, at 3:33 PM, Eileen Misrahi wrote:

 Hi Rebecca,

As Chuck stated, it's a matter of finding that darn bar code. There was a
recent podcast on TekTalk that gave me some other tips on finding the bar
codes. I will try to explain logically what I do. I am not saying that I
find them on the first trial, but I do use a system that will eventually
 will read the bar code.

 1. Cans: I look for the seam on the label. I will begin by placing the
camera to the left of the seam at the bottom and raise the camera slowly,,
listening for the clicks and then move it either higher (no more than 4-6
inches) or move it up the side. If not successful, I will start over, but
place the camera to the right of the seam and perform the same steps. There
are times when the bar code may be about 1 1/2 inches from the bottom and
more to the middle back. These are the tricky ones and at times I will take
out my ID Mate to check where the bar code is.

 2. Plastic bags: I look for the seam on the back of the bag. I did this
yesterday on a bag of brown rice. Usually the bottom edge will have more
plastic as the end edge. I place the camera at the top (opposite edge of the
bottom) and raise the camera slowly. If the bar code is not read, I go to
the next corner. I repeat all four corners (if necessary) to capture the bar
 code.

 3. Bottles: Usually there are two different labels on a bottle. Example:
mustard jar-the front label should be larger then the back label. The bar
code will be on the back label. I try the bottom part of that label first
and then move up the label to find the bar code. I didn't have any problems
 yesterday finding it.

I hope this allows you to get started and not give up on the app. Nancy
Miracle has done a terrific job in creating this app, explanations on the
web site, and support. Hats off to her.

 Hi Jessica,

It's a program that allows you to type letters without being
absolutely precise. After you type what you think the letters of a
word are, Fleksy uses what I like to call Word Prediction. What this
means is that when you complete the word you are typing, a swipe to
the right inserts the word followed by a space character and it is
verbalized by Fleksy. If the word is correct, you continue typing
the next word. If the word is not correct, you can swipe up and I
believe down to hopefully find the word you want and it will be
entered. It is important to note that when you begin typing,
VoiceOver must be unloaded, as speech is generated by Fleksy. I also
downloaded the app and look forward to learning it.

PDA Net in Sidia

2012-07-11 Thread Kimberly thurman
Hi Folks:

I jailbroke my iPhone, but I can't find PDANet in Sidia? I've searched every
way I can think of. I even looked under the section of networking, but still
not there. Driving me crazy! Where's it hiding?

Thanks in advance.

If you jailbreak, do you lose the apps you already have? What about your music
