iPhones and Office 365 apps

2020-02-06 Thread Kwork

Hello all,

The family here recently got office 365, the shared subscription for $10
a month. How accessible are the various office apps, Word, Access,
Excell and One Note. Also, how usable are Skype and One Drive?

Along with this question, if people here prefer other apps for functions
available through the various Microsoft apps, such as interacting with
documents, which ones do people recommend?

Thanks so much for all answers.

I know there are several multi-lingual users on this list who have

Are there any apps that will connect to Dropbox, and that will let you

Re: Any news about VO Tutorial and Money Reader?

2020-01-15 Thread Kwork
Completely silent. Time to switch to Cash Reader for those who have lost
the NantMobile Money Reader due to phone reset or upgrade. At least that
one's being actively developed. More expensive for a lifetime license,
$17.99 with a 14 day free trial, but I think LookTel will have a long
road to climb if they ever return to gain anyone's trust. A shame as
their products did work, and the VO Tutorial was one of the tools I used

viewing iTunes extras using iOS

2019-12-07 Thread Kwork

Hello all,

When purchasing iTunes videos in hd, I'm promised the ability to view
extras in many cases. For instance, The Sound of Music promises about 13
hours of extras. As of yet I've not found a way to view them using
Voiceover. Does anyone have any pointers on how to do this, or is this
one area that remains inaccessible for VO users? Thanks.

Dabel

2019-08-27 Thread Kwork
If anyone here has used it, what do people think of a voice
chatting/streaming app called Dabel?

I found about it a few days ago on Facebook. From a productivity
standpoint, it would rate pretty low, but can be a diversion if you have
time to kill, and want to check out what other people are doing with
their day or life, or to discuss any sort of randomness, or to start
something of your own.

Like any system, there can be drama, but it can also be avoided.

Just wondered if anyone had checked it out. Thanks.

Re: Questions regarding Ebooks

2019-06-03 Thread Kwork
Older versions of the Amazon Kindle reading app for PC will still work
with Codex. Just be sure to disable the auto update feature in the
Kindle program immediately after installing.

If it updates before you can tell it not too, uncheck the auto update
checkbox in options anyway and re-install the older version on top of
it. That should work. That, or disconnect from the Internet before
installing the Kindle for PC program after downloading the setup file.
Then go into the options or settings, whatever it's called, uncheck the
auto update checkbox, then connect to the Internet again.

Here's the page where James Scholes, the Codex creator, talks about the
program's compatibility with versions of the Kindle reading app for the pc:

http://jscholes.net/using-codex-with-kindle-for-pc-1-19/

Keeping this sort of on topic for the list, a book  does need to be
converted to another format that Voice Dream will accept before reading
with anything but the Kindle app.

You can use the Kindle app, which is free, to read the books.
If you have a Windows computer, you could also convert them using an

I agree. Let's not predict doom and gloom for Windows users. The truth
is that Apple hasn't said yet, and that will be the end of story for
now, accept it or not.

If iTunes will be in self destruct mode for Windows users, we'll have
plenty of time to come to terms with that, probably months.

If it happens, there will probably be multiple programs and apps to take
its place. Apple will let us know if/when, and not before then.

free vs. paid web browsers

2018-09-08 Thread Kwork

I am curious here, and I know this will be a matter of opinion only.

For iOS web browsers, of course there are the free standards, Safari,
Firefox, etc. Chrome too, but don't know iOS accessibility. Then there
are also paid ones I've seen mentioned, particularly iCab Mobile.

What do people find to be the advantages of paid web browsers who use
them? Are they worth the expense? What have people found that they can
do that the regular free ones don't offer? Thanks.

strange problem with mail app after iPhone SE to 8 plus upgrade

2018-08-24 Thread Kwork
After upgrading tonight from an iPhone SE to an 8 plus, I can no longer
access Google from the native Mail app. My two existing Gmail accounts
both gave password errors, and the place in settings, passwords, to fill
it in was greyed out. I deleted both accounts so I could start over.

When I now go to set up an email account, and click on Google account,
the screen bounces right back to the Mail app welcome screen, and will
not advance to the next screen. I've had two sighted people here look at
it, both say it's trying to load after being tapped on, then it
immediately bounces back to the welcome screen. I've tried it by opening
the mail app, and also by getting to the accounts from settings.

I've tried the following:

1. Shut off the phone, then turned it back on. I did that twice.

2. Uninstalled the native Mail app, then reinstalled it again from the
app store.

Both methods have failed.

If anyone has any ideas, or have known about this problem, assuming it's
not an isolated one, I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks.

By the way, Yahoo also fails to advance to the next screen. The rest of
the options work.

Re: A Rookie Question about Texting

2018-08-17 Thread Kwork
I've had similar issues, where texting from contacts hasn't always worked. I'd
also be interested in answers.
As for texting with Siri, I've not run into a limit. And, if Siri stops before
you're ready, and when she asks if you want to sent it, say "Append." She will
then ask you what you want to add.

Subject: A Rookie Question about Texting

This evening I tried to send a text to a friend who’s in my contacts. At the
“to” field, I typed in her name. Then I flicked right to “add contact” and
found her name in the table, and double-tapped. Then I flicked right and there
was her phone number with her name; double-tapped there. Then I flicked right
to the message field and double-tapped typed in my message, and tapped Send.
The message did not go through.

When you are sending a message to somebody in your contacts, which is what I’m
going to do most of the time, do you type in their name, or do you just go
straight to “add contact” and choose them? Sometimes I can get this to work
just fine, and sometimes it seems to confound me. So I exit out and ask Siri to
do it. IN this case I wanted to say more than Siri allows …

What am I doing wrong? I feel really silly.

I would say a keyboard would be useful for navigation. I use mine for that,
but I also use it for typing long emails or text messages.

I bought a Logitech 380 for my phone and really like it. I paid $35 at
Amazon (I don't have Prime.) I echo everything Travis says. The missing
Numpad doesn't bother me, and the touch isn't an issue. If I want to take it

Travis, thank you for this complete review about the logitech 380 keyboard.
It sounds like a great keyboard. I'm not sure, but I think the keyboard you
have has been recomended here on the list before, besides some other
logitech key boards, such as the 780, and I think there was 480, and a few
other model numbers. We're interested in seeing these keyboards since they
all seem like good keyboards. The price for your 380 is really great, just
$7 more than the black webb one. The exchange of these keyboards is really
great coming from one another's experiences.

With prime, they're about $27. Without prime, you'll need a third party
seller, prices starting around $20 for refurbished and $33 for new at time
of writing.

Cons: Very few that I've found, so will deal with these first as they are
preference only.
No separate number pad. The numbers are on the row above the qwerty line.
There are function keys. Positive is that most work. The negative for those
wanting to use the keyboard to brighten and darken the screen won't be able
to do so with f1 or f2. F1, f2, f3 are reserved for the three channels
allowed by the keyboard, so three devices can be paired.
For those used to harder to push square keys, you'll be out of luck. Instead
of squares and rectangles for longer keys, you now will have round and oval
shaped keys, and a much more sensitive touch, so no slamming the keys in
anger. Doing so on this lightweight keyboard could possibly break something.

The positives. So far, everything else.
The touch is light.
Responsiveness is nearly immediate. The negative being that it is easily
possible to press a double letter while getting used to the lightness of
touch.
There is an on/off switch on the side.
So far, the AAA battery is lasting.
Thickness is about half of that of a regular keyboard. So is the weight.
Length is probably three inches shorter than a regular keyboard since there
is no numpad. Height is probably one inch less than a regular keyboard.

So far, well worth the purchase.

Arlene, I couldn't find the Black webb keyboards online, and a trip to
Walmart was not in our immediate future, so my wife ordered this one on her
Prime account instead. So far, very happy with it, and it's not $100. :)

I also wonder if the problem is with the structure of the book and other

2018-08-11 Thread Kwork
Ouch! $99 will have to take a pass for now. Looks good though, especially for
those wanting to use it with multiple devices.

Re: bluetooth keyboard recommendation

2018-08-11 Thread Kwork
Thank you.
Meanwhile, this one should arrive today thanks to Amazon Prime, so will update.
I'm curious to know if the keys are truly round. I doubt that'll be a deal
breaker though.

That's interesting, Travis, round keys. I almost think that it would be
confortable to type on, even if the keys are around. I'll get the model number
as soon as I can for you, for the other one we have from walmart.

Travis, one of the bluetooth keyboards we have is the black webb keyboard.
It says it was made for the ipad, but we use it with our se iphones, and it's

It's a very sturdy feeling keyboard, and we both enjoy typing on it.

Re: Rolling back to iOS 10?

2017-09-30 Thread Kwork
Another thing to remember is that there are always complaints when a new OS
of any kind comes out, Windows, iOS, etc. I remember the outcry from those
who wanted to go back to iOS 9 when 10 first came out. If you have it
already, bear with it, keep in touch with Apple accessibility for bugs that
particularly effect you, if any, and update your phone when prompted.

I wouldn't try this after what happened to me back in July. Working with
these bugs will be annoying for a while until they get them fixed, but
it's the safest thing in my opinion.

Hello,
I have seen this before although I thought it was just my phone just being
crazy. I have found that sometimes rebooting the phone helps, but sometimes
not. Sometimes, just waiting to update the apps later has also worked for me.
I hope this helps,

not appear to be a problem but tapping update all got me nowhere nor did
tapping each update individually. Attempted via wifi and cellular without
success. Comments? Suggestions?

  Hi!

I'll try to help with some things I know and uess from your explanations.

When phone is not in a call you should hear all notification sounds from the
bottom side speaker with no exceptions. Some notification sounds could be heard
through the earpeace but this only happens during the active call.

When in the active call you have two situations. If you hold the phone
vertically against your ear you will hear the conversation through earpiece but
if you movethe phone away from your ear the speakerphone will automatically
activate. You can prevent this by covering the front cammera with one finger,
it seems like speakerphone activates when front cammera detects light.

I suspect the speakerphone is active when people say they can't hear you
well, it happens sometimes.

The other thing you should check is Background Noise Cancelation you can find
in Settings, General, Accessibility under the Hearing heading and it should be
off.

And finally, you can easily upgrade to iOS 10 where you can disable automatic
speakerphone feature.

I have noticed the conversation seems to come out of a couple of different

when I think it is doing normally, the sound comes out of the area toward the
top middle of the screen which has a rectangularish cut out of the casethen
sometimes, the sounds seems to be more easily heard by listening toward the

out of the little speaker hole on the bottom of the case next to where you plug
in the phone to recharge. Also, sometimes the person I am talking to says they
can barely hear me and nothing will help that unless I hold the phone
horizontally in front of my mouth so I can speak directly into the bottom of

I also have a problem with the phone seeming to go automatically to speaker

H, what about Look Tel Recognizer? Is it going to be updated?
What I would like to see in this app is to be able to import images from the
Gallery and not have to shoot them manually.

Hi Travis and Listers,

Interesting you asked about the camera. Here now is really the final part of
this unfortunate episode.

My wife and I had to go to Vancouver on Wednesday which is where the closest
Apple Store is to where we live even though it’s an hour and 40 minutes flight.
Anyhow, I had made a genious bar appointment at 6 PM and explained to the nice
young lady who was helping me what happened. I did tell her she might want to
bring this to the attention of her manager and tell him/her that this phone had
been outside in the snow and cold and rain for 4 months and that maybe Apple
might be interested to examine it more closely. Whether she did I have no idea
and it’s out of my hands now. Since I was able to use the phone with Voiceover
she wanted to run a diagnostic on it. According to that the camera was also
damaged/not working and of course the screen. Interestingly enough the battery
test came back good even though I felt it discharged very quickly. I asked her
if she could tell whether there was water damage and she said the diagnostic
didn’t show that and she would have to look at the SIM tray for that.
Apparently the SIM tray is treated with some sort of material which turns pink
when it’s exposed to water. This of course is an easy way for Apple to check
for water damage since the SIM tray is easily accessible and one place where
water would of course enter almost immediately. I told her not to bother
because one of my employees commented on the fact that the SIM tray was pink
when I pulled it out after receiving the phone so apparently water had
definitely entered the phone.

There was no issue getting the phone replaced on Apple Care which we did and we
now have a new iPhone 6S which my wife is going to use. This will mean that
we’ll most likely sell her iPhone 6 64 Gb Silver which I bought for her at the
end of January last year after she came to Canada from the Philippines. I still
have to get Telus to unlock it, but that shouldn’t be a problem at this point.

Regards,

Sieghard

Hi everybody,

Finally, here is the long awaited last chatper of my lost iPhone story.

yesterday the package with my iPhone 6S packed in rice arrived. Externally it
looks brand new with not a scratch on it. When I took out the SIM tray it
seemed like there was maybe a bit of moisture there so I left out the SIM tray
and stuck the iPhone in my toaster oven on a really low temperature for a
couple of hours just to maybe expel a bit more moisture from inside.

After that the moment came and I plugged it in. My wife was there and we
quietly watched, but the screen remained black. After about 2 minutes there was
no change and I thought that answered the question as to whether the iPhone was
still working after having been lying on the ground outside for 115 days, first
in snow and temperatures of up to -40 Celsius/Fahrenheit and as warm as +20
Celsius (68 Fahrenheit) and of course having gone through the process when the
snow and ice around it melted and so on. It was also exposed to the sun, back
in March there was another 10 inches of new snow over the course of a week and
in the week or two before my brother found it on April 15 it had rained lightly
a few times.

Anyhow, I left it plugged in and when I came back to my office 2 hours later I
thought I check it out. I pressed the home button and bingo, Voiceover was
there and asked me to enter my passcode. I did so and the phone unlocked. There
was of course no service since I got a new SIM back in December when I lost it
and I had also just installed a new router at my store so I had to reconnect to
WiFi. As soon as I did so the phone started dinging and binging

Looktel Money Reader hasn’t been updated for almost 18 months and doesn’t
recognise the new Euro notes. I’m really fed up about this as I sent them the
images for one of the notes. I haven’t bothered with the other since they
haven’t done anything about the first one.

Cheers,

Anne

finally resurfaced after snow melt

There
was of course no service since I got a new SIM back in December when I lost it
and I had also just installed a new router at my store so I had to reconnect to
WiFi. As soon as I did so the phone started dinging and binging away as emails
came in, push notification alerts sounded and on top of all that it started
playing the lost sound since back on December 22 we logged in to my iCloud
account and triggered the Find my iPhone sound in case I had just dropped it
somewhere in the house.

At that point it had charged up to 82% and everything seemed totally normal. I
went to Settings > General > Software Update and since I registered this phone
on the public beta program, I was told iOS 9.3.2 public beta 2 was available
for download. I started the download and it downloaded the 1.2 Gb file in about
14 minutes, after that the upgrade proceeded normally and the phone was up and
running again in about 12 minutes.

So, happy ending, right? Well, almost. Shortly after I finished the update one
of my employees walked in to ask me something. I happily told her “Look, the
iPhone that was lying in the snow for 4 months is working”. I held it up and
swiped around and Voiceover was chattering. Then she said “OK, but what about
the screen”. I asked “Why, what about the screen” and she said that it was
totally and utterly black. At first I thought that was no problem, maybe the
screen curtain was on. I did a 3-finger triple tap, but to my dismay Voiceover
said “Screen curtain on” and not “off”. I did it again and Voiceover confirmed
the screen curtain was now off. I checked the brightness and even increased it
to 100%, but she said it just was showing a completely black screen.

So, I guess for the time it’s now truly an iPhone for the blind, it works
perfectly, I made a Skype call on it to my Mom and both speaker and microphones
seem to work just fine, but the screen seems to be not working. It will be
interesting to see if in the next few days it comes back. Anyhow, it so happens
that my wife and I have to go to Vancouver next week so I’ll take it an Apple
Store and get it replaced since I have Apple Care Plus and it’s of course
totally worth it to pay the $130 Canadian which is what an accidental damage
replacement costs. Let’s hope the screen doesn’t start working by then *smile*

The end.

Regards,

Sieghard

Are you sure you want to set the retention to forever for keeping
audio/video messages? After receiving a bunch of messages, I could see you
asking the list how to delete older messages as you now have no room for new
ones, apps, or anything else on your phone as the space is all being used to
store older messages. Just a thought.

I had played these messages. And gotten out of the messages app, come back
in and seen they were there yesterday morning. Then yesterday afternoon,
they were gone. However, since I got the one back that I really need thanks
to resend, all is well that ends well.

didn't deliberately delete it? I guess there is no way to get these

Hi,
Oh thank you for the update as I had wondered from time to time about it. do
let us know how it behaves once it reaches you. I’ll vote for it coming to
life just for the sheer fun of thinking it could (smile).
Best of luck getting it ultimately sorted.

Hi,

just wanted to let everybody know that my brother finally found my iPhone 6S
yesterday. I lost it during a walk on December 22. It was just off to the side
a bit in a place where we spent probably a whole hour looking back then. My
brother said now that the snow and ice is gone he saw it almost right away when
he went back there.

And, when you're done editing, press the home button to get out of edit mode.
If you forget to do this, you could get into a delete confirmation screen next

Hi Regina,
There is an AppleVis podcast on 1Password. You could always try that to see if

Subject: Tim Cook's answer to security but more important 1password question

Thanks for the link to Tim Cook'! Answer about security for iPhone and
government's need to know for security for our citizens. I have thought about
this a lot, and I have come down on the side of Tim Cook. If there was a way to
open only the one phone via a "back door," it would be fine. However, Apple has
taken steps to keep data private to only the user, and I for one use Apple
because of it, among other things.

Did not intend to rant, sorry. I really have a question. I have 1password. Is
there a way to delete a vault? I have actually 2 vaults that I want to delete.
Thank you for any help you can give on this. Also, it confuses me so bad. Are
there any instructions on how to use the app to its potential?
