Braille Screen Input: What's New in iOS and iPad OS 18? Tuesday at 7:30 PM UK Time

2024-09-14 Thread Matthew Horspool
Hi everyone,
Braille Screen Input has been overhauled!
iOS and iPad OS 18, due for release on Monday 16 September, include the biggest
refresh of Braille Screen Input since the feature was first introduced in iOS
8. Although you can, for the most part, still use Braille Screen Input as you
always have done, the new functionality in Apple's latest flagship operating
systems is a source of much excitement throughout the blind community and will
almost certainly take your Braille Screen Input experience to the next level.
Join the Braillists Foundation on Tuesday 17 September at 7:30 PM UK time, as
Matthew Horspool talks us through:

  * The devices supported by iOS and iPad OS 18
  * New ways to enter and exit Braille Screen Input
  *   New sounds and haptics
  *   Braille entry improvements
  * Using Braille Screen Input to control and navigate your iPhone or iPad
We welcome your questions during the session and we will make sure we allow
plenty of time to answer them!
To register, please use this link:
https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0rcuiurD4jEtzda-jQnGPzOtRBBVQuB3YX
Looking forward to seeing you there!

Make the Most of Braille on iOS Devices with the Braillists Foundation, Tomorrow at 7:30 PM UK Time

2021-02-01 Thread Matthew Horspool
Hello everyone,
Did you know you can use your iPhone from your pocket in conjunction with your
braille display? Do you know about braille displays and iOS devices, but don't
know where to get started? Have you heard about Braille Screen Input, but never
quite got the hang of how to use it?
If you've always wanted answers to these questions and more, the Braillists
Foundation can help! Tomorrow (2 February), join us on Zoom at 7:30 PM in the
UK for a session entitled "Using Braille on iOS". Led by Matthew Horspool, an
experienced iOS user and braille expert, we'll find out how to pair a braille
display with an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch and how to get the most out of using
braille with these devices. We will also introduce you to Braille Screen Input.
The session is completely free of charge, will last an hour (ending at 8:30 PM
in the UK), and there will be plenty of time for questions. If you'd like to
join us, please register at:
https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZwoceivqz8rGtbEERfYGlXFSR2eIqx-oc9o
If this time isn't convenient for you, fear not: the session will be recorded
and made available at: https://www.braillists.org/media
It will also be published via our Braillecast podcast - simply search for
"Braillecast" in your podcast client of choice, or ask your smart speaker to
"play Braillecast". We are also available on the Victor Reader range of DAISY
players and the internet radios from British Wireless for the Blind.
Registering for this session also entitles you to attend other sessions in our
Tuesday evening series. For more information, please visit:

RE: Voice Message Alert question.

2018-11-28 Thread Matthew Horspool
Hi Janet,
Have a look in Settings/Sounds and Haptics. There should be an option there to
choose the sound that plays when a new voicemail comes in.
As for the notifications themselves, I've no idea. Perhaps there is a problem
between your phone and your carrier which is preventing the carrier
notification from reaching your phone. It might be worth giving your carrier's
tech support department a ring.

RE: Iphone 6 and IOS 12 and incoming phone calls

2018-11-28 Thread Matthew Horspool
Hi marie,
Nope they are from people that I know. Like I say though, it's such a rare
problem in my case that I just call them back and have done with it.
Thanks for the tip about resetting network settings though. I do know about
this but I must admit it's not something I've tried. I will make sure to turn
off iCloud keychain first so I don't lose all my wifi passwords!

Are these calls from people you recognize, or unknown calls? If they are the
latter, sometimes when spam calls are answered, there is actually no one on the
other end of the call. If it is happening with calls from contacts, there is a
definite problem. However I am not experiencing this with either the 6S or the
8, but I normally do not answer unknown numbers.
Things to try:
do a soft reboot.
Reset network settings. (this will require re-entering any networks you have
previously joined and changing the name of the phone if you have set a specific
name)

I have noticed since IOS 12 that often I will get an incoming call. When I do
a 2 finger double tap to answer it it seems to answer but I hear nothing.
After a half minute or so the call hangs up.

I looked through the settings and can't find anything that seems to affect this.

Has anyone else noticed this? It is driving me crazy.

RE: selecting an option when on the phone

2018-11-28 Thread Matthew Horspool
Hi Linda,

Theoretically, when you make a call, you should have a numeric keypad on the
screen. With that in mind, just take the phone away from your ear to activate
speaker phone mode and use Voiceover as usual on the screen to find the correct
number and type it. The keypad will act like a keyboard for this purpose and
should emit touch tones on successful entry of a number.

RE: iPhone 8+

2018-11-28 Thread Matthew Horspool
Hi Robert,
One of the speakers is in the usual place, to the right of the lightning port
with the lightning port closest to you and screen facing upwards.
The other speaker is in fact the earpiece. The grill to the left of the
lightning port is just a dummy grill, or perhaps it houses a microphone – but
it definitely doesn't house a speaker.

RE: Changing the Siri voice on my stereo pairedHomePods

2018-11-28 Thread Matthew Horspool
Hi Mary,
I can't be much help as I only have one Homepod. However, I know that there is
a way of drilling down into a stereo pair to see the individual speakers that
make up that pair. If you can figure out how to do that, you might then be able
to change the Siri voice.
Perhaps others on here can assist further.

Sent from my iPhone I got the HomePod from Best Buy, and I have to say I am
very impressed with the sound of a pair of them for $500. They are very close
to the sound of speakers I have that I paid a lot more for several years ago,
which is what I was hoping. I first set up one HomePod, and I did see that
there was the availability for changing the Siri voice, as well as the voice
over speed. Now that I have a pair, I don’t see that anymore. You’re supposed
to do 3D Touch or long press on the HomePod in your Home app. Then you’re
supposed to go down to the bottom and see details. And when you’re in there,
you’re supposed to see the ability to change the Siri voice. The problem is
that now but it’s a pear, I don’t get any ability to long press and hold and
get any sort of screen with details. I wonder if you can only change the Siri
voice when the pods are not paired. That seems strange.
Mary

RE: Blue Tooth Tooth Brushes?

2018-11-20 Thread Matthew Horspool
Hi,

I, too, have one of the Oral B brushes and really wanted to take advantage of
the brush reporting fecilities. Unfortunately the app is virtually inaccessible.

The brush has a physical button which allows you to, by default, cycle through
about six brushing modes – basically by adjusting the speed of the motor and
the amount of time the motor runs before it warns you to move to the next part
of the mouth. I did manage to use the app to narrow this down to three options,
but even that was a pig's ear and I don't relish ever having to do it again.

Apps can change and I love having the best that money could buy. I'd probably
buy the brush again just because it's such a good brush in all respects apart
from the Bluetooth, and hopefully Oral B will sort out their accessibility down
the line. But I would probably recommend a simpler brush from Oral B in most
cases.

I have a bluetooth toothbrush from Oral B. I don't really use the bluetooth
option, but if I remember correctly, you can use it to change the settings of
your toothbrush as well as get a report on how you're brushing, such as if you
need to give some teeth or area of your moth some extra attention.

RE: Question about voices

2018-11-20 Thread Matthew Horspool
Hi Rena,
They are the Vocaliser voices from Nuance and there are probably about 20-30 of
them in various English dialects. Names include Samantha, Tom, Daniel and
Karen. There are also a couple of the traditional Apple voices – Fred, Alex and
Victoria.
Honestly, your best bet is to go to
Settings/General/Accessibility/Voiceover/Speech, as Anna has already suggested,
and have a play. You will not break anything by doing this and you will
discover just which voices you have available!

Yes I've noticed it on an iPhone 8 on EE in the UK, but not often. It is very

RE: Sending an iPhone Text Message to a Short Code Address

2018-11-20 Thread Matthew Horspool
Hi Rich,

Is it that your message won't send, or that you can't find where to put the
6-digit number? The former case has already been dealt with. In the latter case:

1. Go to messages and touch on the top left of the screen - the "Edit"
button.

2. Swipe right twice, to the "Compose" button, and double tap.

3. You should land on a "To" text field, with a keyboard visible. Simply
use this keyboard to type the number (note you may need to switch to "More …
Numbers" in the bottom left hand corner first)

4. Now, you need to get to the "Message" text field, at which point you can
proceed as usual. I do this by touching the top left hand corner of the screen
– "New Message" – and swiping right about six times, then double tapping. There
are probably easier ways though.

HTH,

Matthew

Many advertisers now offer a free sample or information if you text a certain

address in the normal message app. How is this done on an iPhone?

Reply to Sender, was RE: sorry

2018-11-20 Thread Matthew Horspool
Hi Patti,
You're right, reply to sender by default would take a lot of clutter off-list.
However, it would also take a lot of good information off the list, and so
precedent is not to set things up that way.
Hope this answers your question a little bit,

Sieghard! I see your point; grin; I was referring to the message sent on top
of mine of the orbit discussion being off topic, because I answered a previous
question from a gentleman who was having trouble getting on it's list, or at
least I gave my input to it.
Not that what I say means anything, but my view is if you don't like a thread
don't read it, you have no clue how much of this list I honestly do not read.
I would not get all steamed up just because a topic doesnt' apply to me. And
even if it is brought back up again which I am sure the gentleman who did
didn't either realize he had gone against moderator protocol or however you say
it, or just forgot because he did have a concern and wanted to voice it, I
wouldn't quarrel over that either. He simply had a question and I was just
giving my input.

I do have a curious question; how come replies aren't set to the sender, rather
than the list? Seems like that would take a lot of this stuff off list.
Just wondering.
Going back into hibernation again.
