Subject: 3-in-1 Charging Stations?

Hi everyone,
I’m finding that I’m traveling more and that it might be good to have one of those charging stations that can charge my iPhone 1 Pro, apple watch 8 and Air pods 3. I’m seeing a bunch of these but before getting one, I thought I’d ask which
ones you particularly liked or had and why.
Right now, I’m noticing that Belkin, Anker and Mophie seem to be the top brands. I also see some differences in power and if there is fast charging on the watch.
What do you guys think?
Jim

It is made from corrugated plastic and will take any smart phone and even an

I dislike the Giraffe Reader because it is built for only one size phone, so if
you change phones you have to replace the stand and it is way more expensive
than the others.
The Fopydo also folds flat.
The DannyBoy is fine, just a bit more fragile and not quite so easy to pack for
carrying from one place to another, but is fine if you use it always in the
same place.

Re: An off list question re purchasing a smart tv

2020-01-01 Thread Rebecca Sabo
hi I am looking for a new assessable TV I have the Roku TV but I can’t use it
on my own because the speech software is not the greatest and so I have that
turned off any suggestions would be great the only subscription right now is to
prime and Hulu I was wondering is there any other great programs to subscribe
to in also cesspool TV then the Roku thanks Becky

I think this is relevant on this list since we are still talking Apple TV and
comparisons.

I don't think that Sanyo Mich provided a link for is a smart TV, typically a
smart TV is one which has internet connectivity and uses the Android operating
system, it probably has things like Netflix and YouTube preinstalled, but you
can also install other apps on it.
If you are fairly invested in the Apple ecosystem I still think an Apple TV is
a pretty good item to have and you have accessible apps for Netflix, Disney
Plus (which, by the way is fantastic), YouTube and Amazon Prime Video.
There is also the new Apple TV service which we have not yet subscribed to and
you can also subscribe to the Canadian Crave TV streaming service which offers
content from HBO, Showtime and Starz.
If you have a cable TV subscription you can get the Crave subscription through
your provider or you can subscribe independently on www.Crave.ca/subscribe.
It's $9.95 a month for the basic offering, if you want all the newest HBO
content and on-demand you can buy an add-on package for another $9.95 a months
(you are now at $19.90) and if you want the additional Showtime package that is
an extra $5.95, total package would be $25.85 a month so that is getting a bit
on the expensive side.
If you add Netflix for $13.99 a month here in Canada and subscribe to Disney
Plus annually ($89.99) you would be looking at $48.34 and if you also throw in
Apple TV Plus with an annual subscription which works out to $5/mnth I think
then you are at $53.34, you'll also pay applicable taxes on Crave and I think
also on Disney Plus and Apple TV Plus (only Netflix somehow gets away with not
charging Canadian taxes) so in the end if you are in BC you would pay close to
$60 a month for all that content. Oh, and I forget, there is also CBC Gem which
gives you access to all the CBC programming and I think it's $4 or so a month.
But still that isn't actually all that bad considering that a decent cable
package can easily cost you the same and more if you want a premium package.
We have Amazon Prime anyways so we can access their movies, but unfortunately
it seems there is little described content here in Canada, mostly we watch
Netflix and Disney Plus which, as I said, for me is a great service since I
like a lot of their older movies and musicals like Iron Will which we just
watched last night (it has audio description), some of the other Christmas
oriented movies and so on.

Of course an Apple TV is also an Airplay device, gives you access to Apple
Music and acts as a hub for many home automation devices which support Home Kit.

I think we are at a point where often a single device does not do it all and
whenever we buy a new TV I would most likely buy a smart TV with built-in
Chromecast even though we have our Apple TV also.
For now my old 40 inch Sony LCD TV I bought 12 years ago still works great, it
was on the higher end of TV's back then costing $1,600 and it does 1080P but of
course it's not a 4K TV and has a huge frame/bezel compared to TV's nowadays.
Now the newer 55 inch and 65 inch TV's are coming down in price so much that I
think it's almost time to upgrade, but most likely we'll wait another year or 2
or 3 since we have some other projecgts higher up on the list such as
rebuilding and expanding our deck, maybe a greenhouse since both my wife and I
enjoy gardening etc.

Best regards,
Sieghard

Subject: An off list question re purchasing a smart tv

Hi I am interested in purchasing a smart tv.
Is there A particular make or model that would be accessible to someone with no
vision or is the Apple Tv a better option.
Feel free to email me off list with input.
Thanks.

Hi,
I know I’ve argued this point on this and other lists many times. But what I’m
about to tell you just feeds my argument.
Anyway, last month, I purchased a Tribit Storm Box BT speaker on Amazon, which
works perfectly, how it should, speech and sounds and music coming out of it
instead of the phone’s speaker.
For Christmas, I received the Tribit X-Sound Go (which I asked for as a smaller
option to the storm box, thinking oh, it will work, having speech, audio, and
sound coming out of it instead of the phone’s speaker.) Darn if I didn’t pair
it today, and it acts JUST like the bose soundlink micro and the Bose
soundwear, with speech coming out of the phone (blah) and music (if I happen to
be using the speaker for music and not just games like I often do) coming
through the speaker. So I don’t think the problem is bose or even high end
speakers, because this xSound Go cost $29, and the storm box (the one that
works right) cost $45. So I’m curious what the bose speakers, the SoundBlaster
Roar, The Pocket Kick, and now the Tribit XSound Go all have in common that the
other Tribit Storm Box, the UE Boom, the Oraolo go, and the Zulu audio don’t
have. I’m very confused, because there doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason
why some speakers behave properly (storm box, etc.) and some don’t (bose, SB
Roar, X Sound Go, etc). under iOS 13. Curiouser and curiouser.
I will let apple know, and I will also contact Tribit to see if there’s a
firmware update.
I know some of you guys like VO and system sounds coming through the phone’s
speaker, but quite frankly, I can’t stand it. I have a really hard time hearing
VO, because when a BT speaker is connected, you lose the ability to adjust VO
volume, my rotor’s already at 100 percent. And I don’t know, I just don’t feel
like restarting my device 5 6 and 7 times a day or more is very healthy, just
to be able to play my games or whatever through a BT speaker.
Anyway, those are my observations, take them as you will. :)

I assume Larry is talking about the Roku boxes?
I really think if somebody really wants the most out of what TV and the various
devices and services have to offer that a single device isn't necessarily the
answer. Fortunately a lot of these things like Roku and a Fire TV stick and
even the Google Chromecast aren't very expensive so there is no reason why one
can't have any number of them. I agree that considering the quality of speech
nowadays it shouldn't be that hard for Roku to include a decent TTS unless of
course their boxes run on very low-powered processors which may make a higher
end TTS not possible. I think I heard the voice on Roku is eSpeak, but I'm not
totally sure. If it is or if it is similar I also would not necessarily enjoy
using it. I use Eloquence with Jaws since I am not a fan of the high quality
voices for daily work, but I can't stand eSpeak.

Hi,
Unfortunately, this app hasn't been updated in a while. ICatcher is still
actively being updated and is fully accessible. Plus the author is aware of
voiceOver users.

Hope this helps,
Brett.

Cheers Brett.

 Hi All,

Within the last few days I've been experiencing lots of dropped
calls or calls that simply don't connect with my iPhone 6 running
the latest iOS. I can't think why this might be happening since I
updated the iOS longer ago than the beginning of the problem. Any
 thoughts are appreciated.

I just decided to have a little patience, and wait a few days before

here is what i dislike about it. i know some may disagree and that is fine.
sometimes people attack you when you dare criticize the GREAT APPLE!

 problems i have in IOS7
 1. slower. i have noticed on my iphone 5 voice over seems to run slower. it
seems to be more sluggish on speech and flicking through applications. the
phone also takes a half or more of a second to lock when i click the lock
 button.

 2. voice over sounds are different. on the ipad voice over, voice over
would always make a sound when you flick from different frames or areas on
the page. for example, if you are on an ipad and in the messages
application, try flicking from the message display area down into the text
message box where you type new messages. you do this by flicking right. on
the ipad voice over always made a unique noice indicating that you have
gone into a new area of the screen. the iphone voice over never did this.
well, on the new IOS 7 it now does. this annoying

 3. the side switch no longer silences flicking sounds. on IOS 6 the switch
above the volume buttons would silence the clicks made on voice over when
one flicks left or right. on the new IOS7 this switch has no effect on the
special clicks and noises associated with voice over.

 4. voice over looses focus. i have noticed, and perhaps it is just me, that
voice over sometimes looses focus on where you were last on the screen. it
is difficult to explain and perhaps i am the only one who has this problem.
but, sometimes when i am flicking right down a page, voice over appears to
jump back to the top or loose focus in some other manner. voice over was
always completely stable in IOS6 and i never had this problem. nor did i
ever have voice over read previously read aloud text at the wrong time when
such text was not being selected and should not have been read. again,
difficult to explain. but, i do not believe voice over is as stable as it
 used to be

 5. finally, i dont see any real feature enhancements. without any real
enhancements i wouldnt update. just my recommendation

Hi, it sounds like you are deleting the contact details rather than the
actual contact entry. So, you must delete the actual contact entry and
that will take all the details with it. Find the contact you want, double
tap edit, now swipe down to the very last field. A single tap with 4
fingers on the lower part of the screen will take you there, now swipe
left a couple of times and then swipe right to the end and the delete
button should be there. Double tap that and the entire entry will be gone
and you will be placed on your list of contacts with that one gone.

 Hope this helps.

 Hello List,

I was looking at the app description of Downcast and right as the first

In celebration of the arrival of Downcast for OS X,
 https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/downcast/id668429425?mt=12, Downcast for iOS
 is temporarily on sale!

I believe Downcast is usually $2.99 and it is currently on sale for 99
Cents. Anybody who is looking for a good podcast app should take advantage of
this, Downcast is fully accessible with Voiceover and in terms of features
and user friendliness it doesn’t get much better than that.
Besides that, some of the Mac users who use Downcast on their iOS device or
devices, may be happy to know that there is now a Mac app as well.

For those who want to read more about Downcast which is considered to be one
of the best podcast clients out there by sighted as well as blind users, here
 is the app store link:

 https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/downcast/id393858566?mt=8

Subject: Virtual Firefox App: Is it accessible with VO?

 Hello Folks,

Before purchasing this app, I would like to know if others on this list has
the app and if it is accessible with VO. It is on sale, but the cost is still
a little steep if it isn't accessible with VO. Any insight about this app
would be greatly appreciated before purchasing.

 Thanks in advance.

 Best,
 Eileen
