Re: favorite ways to use Siri?

2015-05-06 Thread Vincent Thacker
I use Siri mainly to find my way around. If I say "Speak walking directions to
High Street" it gives me a pretty good commentary on how to get to High Street,
but I use Maps at the same time to give me more detail. Maps tells me how close
I am to the next turn, and uses street names, while Siri tends to deal in road
numbers, which isn't always helpful. Combined, though, the two things are
pretty effective.

And if I want to know where I am at the moment,  I will say to Siri, "Speak
where I am", which sounds pretty strange, but it works. If I just say where am
I? Siri puts up a map and says "There you are", which is no use to me whatever.
If you have Maps on, swipe through the screen until you find current location,
and it will give you the street or road name.

Nothing's perfect, and if I tell Siri I want to get to Hotel Street, it starts
reeling off the names of hotels.

And if I dare to know better than Siri how to tackle part of the route, it
tells me in no uncertain terms to get back on the route. Never mind if there's
an 8-lane road that stops me going straight to the next bit of Siri's
itinerary¬!

Vince.

I use it to launch apps, add, subtract and other math functions, get
word definitions, find companies and addresses... I find it very
helpful.

Sorry, couldn't make anything of this. But if you leave the UK for Europe,
then they use Euros, so worth getting a few sample Euro notes and coins off
a bank (at a price) or the post office (for just the exchange rate) and
check them out directly before you go. I usually only buy $$s off my local
post office, then put them in a parcel and post them back to the US. I can't
check those in any way at all.

I just tried this finger thing today since I had a £10 or tenner and checked
where it came up my finger. Then I spent it and had a £5 or fiver in my
change, and checked that too. The difference when measured against a
constant like your fingers is quite distinct and reliable.

I apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

RE: photos on iphone.

2015-05-13 Thread Vincent Thacker
Hi, Christopher,

You don't say what version of Windows you have, but I can say that this isn't
usually a big problem in Windows 8.1, at least in my setup.

I plug my phone into a USB port, then press Windows key plus E to start file
explorer, and there are all my libraries of stuff such as documents and
pictures, plus all the drives further down the screen. One of the drives is
called Vince's iPhone. If I press Enter on that, it shows a folder on the
iphone called DCIM, I press Enter on that and get a folder with a number, and
when I press Enter on that, I can get at the contents, photos or whatever. I
usually select them all with Control plus A, then copy with Control plus C, Cut
with Control plus X, navigate to a folder on the PC where I want to transfer
the material, and press Control V to paste everything.

Pretty much the same as moving files around the PC,, in fact.

Hope that's some help.

Vince.

I don't iknow any reason why it shouldn't work. In Windows, if you want to

RE: First impressions of Voice, Take a picture and have it read.

2015-05-20 Thread Vincent Thacker
Sandy,

Yes, you need Internet connectivity at the moment for this app, because it does
the OCR on line and provides the speech via Google. This may change in future
according to the young man who's developed the app. More info in Applevis
podcast no. 29, if I remember rightly. It's well worth a listen.

Yes, I believe you need internet connectivity as there is not a built-in OCR
engine with this app. It sends the data to the internet for that function, as
far as I understand it.

Hi,

Having seen this app mentioned here, I decided, it being free!!! to download it
and take it for a spin on my 6 running 8.3.

Once I enabled the camera and turned on the flash, I took a shot of a dog
magazine and then did the same with the KNFB Reader app. I have to tell you
that, on this one example, this free and tiny app, did as well as the very
expensive KNFB reader. I am, by the way, not knocking the latter app, merely
wanting to encourage people to give it a try, especially if the KNFB is too
pricy for you.

The are a few things that could be improved with the interface. If it were
possible to simplify and automate rthat than having to press extra buttons,
such as the "done" button, I would say we have an outstanding winner! Always
with the proviso that I have only tried it using one example. I liked the way
that the app told me that all 4 edges were visible without me needing to use a
"field of view report" button. Plus, I did try opting for the "automatic"
option in settings, but couldn't see how to use it. The 6 page intro seems a
bit lacking and I don't understand why, and on this other apps are equally
guilty, there seems to be a need for multipage introductions, generally saying
nothing of use and yet requiring the use of the page switching button, a thing
that often does not work properly.

I shall play with this more, but would like to know, as it is so small, do I
have to have internet connectivity? Plus, the choice of using VOs built in
voices would be nice as I, for example, can understand Danniel much easier than
any other voice.

So, as a first impression I would suggest to anyone to give it a try, costs
nothing and has been designed for the love of doing it and helping.

Sandy.

It's an OCR app. The take the picture bit is about taking pictures of

Had you actually converted the file format to m4a first? It doesn't usually

One thing I absolutely adore about all of the Galaxy products,

the new S 6, is the number of native RingTones, sounds, and notifications

A quick Google search will turn up many sites where the stock
 RingTones for
many popular Android Smartphones have been ripped and placed in a Zip
 file,
ready to be used by anyone.

The primary reason why these RingTones are made readily available is
 so that
those who wish to create what are known as custom ROMS can more closely
mirror the native manufacturers OS with regard to basic functionality.

Okay, okay; too much information, right?

The following is text that I posted to an Android list containing the

to the RingTones, sounds and notifications for the S 6 which, you may
 use on
 your iOS device.

Download The Samsung Galaxy S 6 and 6 Edge Stock RingTones, Sounds, and

For a while now I've been using a text message alert on my iPhone 6 Plus
that I ripped from a Galaxy Note 2.

There are several ringtones and/or notifications on my Galaxy S 6 that I
want to use on my 6 Plus, as well.

Imagine my surprise when I discovered that all the hard work had already
been done for me as the S 6 and 6 Edge stock sounds are available on The
 Android Soul.com website.

All they ask is that one gives them credit for the Zip file when
 sharing the
link or when using the sounds in a custom ROM.

So, for those of you who want to sprinkle a little Galaxy seasoning into
your Apple sauce (or anything else for that matter), I offer the
 following
 two links:

 1.
The direct download link to the Zip file containing all of the stock
 sounds
for Samsung Galaxy S 6 and 6 Edge:
 http://www.theandroidsoul.com/downloads/file/S6Rings.zip

 2.
The URL to the Android Soul.com site which contains the link listed
 above:
 http://www.theandroidsoul.com/download-samsung-galaxy-s6-ringtones-74737/

Please note that all of the files are in their original format said
 format
 being .ogg

In order to be used in iOS as ringtones or notifications, assuming you do
not use iTunes in the conversion process, they will first have to be
converted to .m4a and then subsequently renamed to .m4r.

 Enjoy,

 Mark

Re: M4r versions of the Android tones, partial job done, was Re: A Very Excellent Source for Free RingTones, Sounds, and Notifications

2015-06-03 Thread Vincent Thacker

If you're at all familiar with the command prompt, it's easy enough to change
the extensions of all those m4a files at one go.

This is an outline of how you can do it.

Start menu in Windows, select Run, or press Windows Key plus R.
Enter CMD in the run dialog.
You will now be placed at the command prompt. You may hear something like Users
backslash then your user name.

Change to the folder where your m4a files are stored.  Example: c:\temp

Once you hear the folder name enter this command:
ren *.m4a *.m4r

That's simply rename all the m4a files to m4r.

To get out of the command prompt, enter exit.

Vince.

I know how to do it on Windows, if you are using a Mac, someone else will need
to help.
Open Windows Explorer, and navigate to the folder with the M4 a file you want
to rename.
Make sure it is selected, but do not open it. The easiest way to select it is
to down arrow to it or if it is the first file in the folder, down arrow off it
and up arrow back to it.
Then, press F2 and change the extension from M4A to M4R.
Hit enter and you are done.

Richard

Is the built-in Maps app not enough for what you want? You can also tell Siri
to speak walking directions to a particular place, and Siri will then work
alongside Maps, which gives you a lot of detail.

For transport, I've heard good things about Travelline.

Dear all. I will be traveling to Uk in the last week of June. I will spend some

an accessible gps app that I can use to find places and walk to them? And also
to be able to go to places using public transport.
And aside, and offlist, Are their accessible tourism packages available that
blind people can use in London?
Thanks in anticipation. and apologies for an off list question.

I never had a great experience with Siri giving me walking directions. Off all
places I have been trying it at Washington DC metro area  maybe I am not doing
something right? Can you guide me to a podcast in which Siri is being used for
knowing walking directions to a particular place

Dear all. I will be traveling to Uk in the last week of June. I will spend some
time in London and few days in Brighton downtown. Can someone please recommend
an accessible gps app that I can use to find places and walk to them? And also
to be able to go to places using public transport.
And aside, and offlist, Are their accessible tourism packages available that
blind people can use in London?
Thanks in anticipation. and apologies for an off list question.

Re: Accessible gps app to walk independently in UK?

2015-06-07 Thread Vincent Thacker
Yes, that's how it works for me. As I'm walking, I can hear a countdown every
so often to the next turn, and the street name of the street I'll be turning
into. Siri tends to use road numbers, which isn't always helpful, while Maps
uses the street names.

Maybe something to do with Settings on my maps app. Does it tell  things like

Re: Question About GLPS

2015-06-08 Thread Vincent Thacker
Quite often, I am told that I'm 2 or 3 doors away from where I actually am.
It's not just the iphone that's given me these slightly off results either.
I've accepted it as inherent inaccuracy in GPS. Mind you, I have sometimes been
indoors when I've got these results, so it may be a bit unfair to judge
anything like that.

Hello,
GPS accuracy varies depending on how clear a view of the sky you have. So if
you're in a vehicle, you can often improve accuracy by putting your device near
a window. On the street, there's not much you can do. The weather can affect
accuracy, for instance. So maybe you'll get a better signal another day.
Best,Anna

Is there a way to reinstall the GPS software without destroying other settings?

Thanks!

I've got that link to work fine. Maybe you could try a fully-qualified version,
which is

http://www.voiceover-easy.net/

Looks like a very useful resource.
