iPhones can now tell blind users where and how far away people are
Hi! This sounds quite promising! What is everybody’s view on its practical use for us? The lidar in the iPhone 12 Pro shows up in this infrared video. Each dot reports back the precise distance of what it reflects off of. First, it tells the user whether there are people in view at all. If someone is there, it will then say how far away the closest person is in feet or meters, updating regularly as they approach or move further away. The sound corresponds in stereo to the direction the person is in the camera’s view. Second, it allows the user to set tones corresponding to certain distances. For example, if they set the distance at six feet, they’ll hear one tone if a person is more than six feet away, another if they’re inside that range. After all, not everyone wants a constant feed of exact distances if all they care about is staying two paces away. The third feature, perhaps extra useful for folks who have both visual and hearing impairments, is a haptic pulse that goes faster as a person gets closer. Last is a visual feature for people who need a little help discerning the world around them, an arrow that points to the detected person on the screen. Blindness is a spectrum, after all, and any number of vision problems could make a person want a bit of help in that regard. Seeing AI photo description - any shortcut?
The Seeing AI application from Microsoft has a wonderful photo recognition feature which describes the photo in great detail. However to reach the menu is very cumbersome. Let me give you an example. When I get a photo, I first have to tap it and click on share, then I have to tap it again on share in the next menu; and then it comes to a long menu and I have to scroll right to the end of the menu where there is the link ”recognise with seeing AI” In all I have to tab three or four times before I can get the application to start recognising the photo. I am sure they must be a shorter way to do this. Can anyone please help? -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list. I started Beta testing iOS 13 almost since the start of the public beta program and already experienced the issue I mentioned in the subject line throughout the beta cycle. I as well as other Voiceover beta testers I know have reported this via the Feedback app during the beta cycle. I am sure given how many other Voiceover users experience this, it has also been reported to Apple Accessibility since the official release. I will also CC this to the Viphone list where visually impaired users discuss iOS and iOS devices so they can forward this back to Apple accessibility, I tried to outline the issue in as much detail as possible so there is no point for others to have to re-write all this, but of course everybody can feel free to add any comments to what I wrote. The issue: you make a phone call and after you hang up all sounds go away as do vibrations. Different users seem to be effected differently, some experience this more than others, but it happens on phone calls, Facetime calls as well as calls with other apps such as Skype. It used to be that for me it mostly happened if I was using the wired Apple Earpods and then asked SIRI to call somebody and then used te in-line remote button on the Earpods cable to hang up the call. Now in iOS 13.1.1 it seems worse for me, yesterday I made two calls directly from the phone without any headset and hung up with a 2-finger double tap and both times my phone went silent and it is then extremely difficult for a blind person to get Voiceover and other sounds back. Vibrations also go away except for a very small amount of haptic feedback when I press the virtual home button (I have an iPhone 8), not sure if people who have an X/XR/XS or 11/11 Pro get any haptic/vibration feedback at all. I often use the Mute switch to determine if the phone is still even on when I have an issue with Voiceover going silent. Wen the phone is unlocked or on the lock screen and I flick the switch to Mute, there is a vibration and that is a good way to make sure the phone is on, but even that vibration is not present in this case. If I call my phone from another phone I also get no vibrations even so I have set my phone to vibrate any time a call comes in. To a blind person it almost appears as if the phone was off, but my wife who is sighted says she can do anything on the phone and when I call it the call pops up on the screen and she can answer it. Fixes: I have tried to triple tap the home button which I set up to toggle Voiceover on and off, but that in itself has no effect. Same with asking SIRI to turn Voiceover on and off, when the phone is in this state I also get no SIRI sound, e.g. I can say “Hey SIRI” and my wife says SIRI comes up and is listening, but the tone doesn’t play and if I ask something like “What time is it” SIRI shows the result but it does not speak the time as it usually does. As I said, all sounds are gone as if the volume was completely at 0%. And, before you suggest that it is maybe because the volume dropped to 0%, it is not since I always check this by pressing the volume up button repeatedly and my wife confirms that volume was actually at 100%. Sometimes this resolves itself if I call the phone and answer the call, then hang up the second call and then turn Voiceover on and off, but there have been times when the only solution was to completely turn off the phone and turn it back on. Of course for a completely blind person this is also not always easy if you get no feedback whatsoever, I have to hold the Power button for a bit hoping I did so long enough so the Power Off button is there and then that a double tap will activate it, then wait 30

Re: Here is a Fabulous Pill Reminder App for iOS that is 100% VoiceOver Accessible
Hi! For the past many years, I have been using the native reminders app in the iPhone to remind me about my pills. I take about 10 pills a day! And it works very well. I can even tell Siri to add a reminder! At sometime, I have to take four pills together, so I use one reminder mentioning the names of all the four bills and set it for every day! What will be the advantage of this application over the native reminders app? So, one you add a particular medication, all you need do is to select the done button located near the upper right corner of the display. The next step will be to open the reminders section of the app and from there, you will select the name of the medication that you added in the previous step. Fill in the reminder preferences and remember to activate the Save button, located near the upper right corner of the display. Now, close the app. This is to say, remove it from active memory. It is not necessary to do this, on a normal basis, but in order for me to be certain that you see what I want you to see, it is best that you do so. Taylor" To: Sent: Thursday, July 04, 2019 1:49 PM Subject: Here is a Fabulous Pill Reminder App for iOS that is 100% VoiceOver Accessible Hello Everyone, I found this incredibly VoiceOver accessible pill reminder app. The app works just as described in its description. The developer even mentions VoiceOver in his description. Those of you with Apple watches are going to love this app, especially if you have silent reminders enabled. Now there is one VoiceOver glitch that you will encounter only when you have no data in the app. I suspect that this is why the developer has not caught it because once you have any data in the app, whatsoever, the glitch goes away, completely. So, when you first launch the app, you will be prompted to allow notifications. No problem there. Once you reach the default screen, the display tells you that you have no data in the app, Touching the center of the screen, while voiceover is enabled, causes the app to crash. This is the same on iPad. On iPhone, the buttons to use the app are located on the bottom row of the display. On iPad, these buttons are located down the left side of the display. Simply activate any of these buttons, for example, select the reminders, tab, enter even a temporary medicine name, and the empty screen message goes away and all is perfect. Re: iPhone Braille dot 5,6
Yes! Thank you! Yes the first two replies were excellent and explain the problem completely. Thank you for your clarification. However, what I was asking was, that when voice-over is used to type on my Braille keypad in my iPhone, if I do not type dot 5 and 6 and just type the “w” with the space after it it should read it as “will” isn’t it? However it does not. Do I have to change any settings on my iPhone for my iPhone to read the contractions? K- On 07-Jul-2019, at 11:22 PM, M. Taylor wrote: Hello, Is your first name Karuna? The only heated pool, with ozone filtration to which I have access is the one I have now. I paid a huge amount of money to get an annual membership. I cannot now go and start looking for open water swim! The nearest would anyway be about 2000 miles away! That’s impossible! This is such a high tech group of tech savvy technocrats! I’m sure other people must be facing this problem as well. How do they cope with it? Can I mount a camera on my forehead, wear a helmet with a camera on it which would then worn me if something is coming in front? Something please suggest! Swimming pool collision avoidance system?
I really enjoy and love swimming. I go swimming to my club where there is a 50 meter pool. Are usually try and go went there at the least number of people using the swimming pool. The swimming pool is 50 m long and 25 m wide with no lanes marked on it. Are usually swim very straight. If there is only one other swimmer in the pool, I have no problems in avoiding them. The problem arises when two or more other swimmers enter the pool. I am petrified of swimming either into them or having a head-on collision with them! When I have a buddy outside by the side of the pool, I would put on my AirPods and tape them to my year with waterproof tape. I would stay connected to my friends iPhone and he would pass instructions on who was swimming in front or behind me. Unfortunately I can’t have this arrangement all the time. Has anybody ever felt this problem? Is there some way that I can use to avoid colliding into anyone in the swimming pool without external help? -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list. Apple Watch may get built-in sleep tracking by 2020
The Verge - Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at 6:10 PM Apple Watch may get built-in sleep tracking by 2020 The functionality would need to work around the device’s limited battery life Since its launch in 2015, Apple has increasingly positioned the Apple Watch as a health and fitness device; something that helps users track their workouts and look after their body. But one popular feature has been missing from Apple’s built-in software: sleep-tracking. Not for much longer, says Bloomberg. The publication reports that Apple is testing sleep tracking functionality and, if it meets standards, plans to add it to the Apple Watch by 2020. You can already track your sleep on the Apple Watch using third-party apps, but the device has always been hamstrung in this regard by its relatively slim battery life. Apple promises users a full day’s use from the watch before charging it overnight (and this often looks more like two days’ use, depending on usage), but that’s not enough for regular sleep tracking. Rival fitness-focused wearables with sleep tracking like the Fitbit Versa or Withings Steel Hybrid Smartwatch, for example, last up to weeks before needing a charge. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman notes that in order to make sleep-tracking functional for the Apple Watch, the company will need to increase its battery life or find a way to run sleep tracking in a low-power mode overnight. Or, if charging speeds increase, it could just ask users to top up their batteries in the morning. With sleep tracking built into the Apple Watch the company would increase its range of health tracking features, which now take in everything from electrocardiograms (added in the Apple Watch Series 4) to automatic workout detection (added in watchOS 5). Adding sleep tracking to this bundle would be another reason not to take the Apple Watch off your wrist. https://www.theverge.com/2019/2/26/18241136/apple-watch-sleep-tracking-functionality-2020-report -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list. Re: Accessible sleep tracker for the Apple Watch.
Over the past few days, I have tried 4 sleep tracker apps. Auto sleep, sleep watch, sleep plus plus and pillow. On a few nights, I had all 4 apps running simultaenously! I think I have done an in-depth review of all of them and find that the most accurate one is actually Auto Sleep! Unfortunately this app is also the least accessible and voice-over unfriendly. However I discovered it saving grace-Siri shortcuts! It has five amazing Siri shortcuts which can help get over the accessibility hitch. Auto sleep voice commands one. Time asleep 2.today’s readiness 3. Latest bedtime 4. Sleep ring 5. Going to sleep So just asking Siri can do a lot of work for you on this app! Also I found this is the only app which has heart rate variability also. For this you have to do a one minute briefing session every morning when you wake up. As an added bonus, this event is very relaxing! I have written to the app developers to make this more VoiceOver friendly. If any other people are interested in this app, I request them to also write to the developer to make it more accessible! Sleep well! Just press record!
With the “Just Press Record” app, can someone kindly help me with the following: 1. On the Apple Watch, how do I start and stop the recording ,without the start recording button and the pause, stop recording button sounds also being added to my recording? I read somewhere that if I make the Just Press Record app as a complication, it would start recording the moment I hit the complication. But this does not happen always add I have to press the record button. 2. The Siri shortcut works fine on the iPhone. But it does not work on the Apple Watch. How do I make it work there? 3. If my recording is more than 70 seconds long, on the Apple Watch, my watch goes to sleep. Then I have to wake up the watch and then hit the stop recording button. All the sounds I added into my recording. This makes it very unprofessional and tacky. How can I get around this? Navigating the email replies on Google groups page
Hi! I am new to this group. I find it very useful. I read all the messages on the Google groups page in my Safari app on my iPhone. However, I find it very hard to navigate from one new message reply to the next. The message is only a few lines followed by many many many lines of text which are not relevant. How can I move from one message header to the next? I tried using headings and navigate by headings but that does not work. I tried navigating by images but that does not work. Can someone kindly help. Thank you! (Voice Converted to Text via iPhone;Excuse typos) -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list.
