Accessibility/readability of google books

2013-07-23 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
When I refer here, in the subject line, to accessibility or readability of
Google books, I do not mean Google play books or any other related e-books.
Google books seem to be set and I believe are either pictorial
representations/graphical representations of the books and therefore are
unreadable to screen readers such as voice-over. I have found a book I am
desperately seeking but it is only available on Google books, andnot in any
other format. Before I give up on it, I wanted to see if anybody has had any
experiences of being able to read these books? Often, you canget a
Previous page button and next page button but it does not seem to speak any of
the actual text on the pages. This is my experience both with jawsand with VO
on my iPhone. I just thought I'd check to see if anybody has had any different
experiences.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Accessibility/readability of google books

2013-07-23 Thread Teresa Cochran
The Google books on the web that are not specifically ebooks are scanned
images. As far as I'm aware, the only thing you could try is scanning each page
and performing OCR on it. This seems extremely labor-intensive. Have you looked
for other sources? Unfortunately, it might almost be easier to get a hardcopy
outhe book if there are no ebook versions available anywhere.

The first book I read on my IPhone was a Google book. I found the
book, bought it, and then read it without any difficulty straight

Re: Accessibility/readability of google books

As far as I understand it, Kirsten's reference was to the books that are
searchable in google, which are not ebooks. These are scanned images from
books, and aren't readable with an accessible app or screen-reader.

2013-07-23 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Thank you Teresa, you have confirmed my suspicions.
Penny, I think you might be referring to books which are now called Google play
books. I have an app for those which works well, as well as Kindle of course
and nook and IBooks. I think, in that regard, I have every app Going for the
purposes of book reading. Oh well, I will buy a printed copy and scan it in
with ViewScan and the Mac… LOL
Thanks
