Robin From: Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Thursday, December 18, 2014 2:46 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Accessibility of app to control Philipps or Belkin WiFi connected LED light bulbs Hi List, I was wondering if anybody has Philipps Hue connected light bulbs and whether the app is fully accessible. For those who don’t know what this is, the product consists of a bridge which connects to your router and which can then talk to up to 50 light bulbs. You can then control said LED light bulbs via the free app and turn the lights on/off, set brightness level, change the colour of the light from regular warm white to any colour you can think of and create schedules which turn lights on or off at certain times and so on. The product is pretty expensive at this point, a starter pack with bridge and 3 light bulbs is $199.99, each additional light bulb is $59.99. You can get a bridge with 2 of the so-called “Lux” light bulbs for $99.99 and additional bulbs for $29.99. These less expensive bulbs can only be dimmed, but cannot change colour. There are a couple of styles like regular A19 household bulbs or BR30 floodlights. I just saw that Belkin has released a competitive product under their Wemo line of home automation products. At this point they only have bulbs which cannot change colour and the pricing for those is the same as the Philipps ones. I really hope this drops in price to a point where bulbs would be $19.99 or so and maybe $29.99 for the ones which can change colour. You can pick up a good quality LED light bulb these days for around $8 or $9 so paying a $20 premium just so they can talk to the bridge is steep, but I am still wondering about the accessibility. If it comes to a point where all bulbs in the house are like this light detectors would for the most part become a thing of the past as eventually we would just tell SIRI to turn off all lights (still wishful thinking at this time, but I also think this may only be 2 or 3 years away). RE: Accessibility of app to control Philipps or Belkin WiFi connected LED light bulbs
Hi Steve, That’s a matter of opinion and also very much depends on the size of your dwelling. If you live in a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment I agree that it’s not hard to figure out what lights are on with a light detector or even by checking the switch positions. If you have a 2 or 3 story house with 4 or 5 bedrooms, several bathrooms, a utility room, family room, living room, kitchen and so on it’s a different matter. You’d be running all over the place, up and down the stairs where you could just pull up your app and turn off all lights at once. Then there is of course the advantage of being able to set schedules where maybe a few lights come on here and there if you are not home to give the impression somebody is home. Thanks, Ben, I know jailbreaking does has a few interesting perks, but I assume Apple will give developers access to SIRI sooner or later and it's probably going to be sooner rather than later. I heard a demo when SIRI first came out where the guy who did the demo had found a way to control his WiFi thermostat with SIRI. Apart from a focus on health related stuff, I think there will be a lot of new stuff in the area of home automation. I heard that some developers found code somewhere which indicates Apple may design a new Apple TV to be not just for TV and other media, but also the hub for everything related to home automation. I think this would make total sense since your Apple TV sits there all the time, it's already connected to your home network and could easily pass along all sorts of commands and requests. RE: Accessibility of app to control Philipps or Belkin WiFi connected LED light bulbs
Light detector is wonderful for finding lights around. I don’t think I know anything about the lights you are talking about here, in fact, I know I haven’t a clue but I do know how guests seem to turn on every light in the house and then leave me to figure out which ones are on and I find some I’d least expect, like in my bedroom where they were not invited or expected to be. Drives me a bit crazy. Not sure I would automate this place anyway it would probably break everything, and I have had enough things stop working here over the past several months. Need to change batteries in a talking thermostat today, hope I have the right batteries and can figure out how to do this, recall Tom taking it off the wall once a few years ago, not sure if I can do it or will have to call cousin/husband over 100 miles away to help, hopefully since I know how to use almost any hand tool I can do this alone. If I don’t have the right batteries I can call someone close but she is not mechanical at all, I know 10 times what she does about fixing anything. She is a great driver, great finder if something its lost but no mechanic. At least Dad knew life would be difficult enough, so he taught me at a very early age how to use hand tools, screwdrivers, wrenches, of all types and how to take apart and put things together. I could have been only about four when I replaced a door knob that was a problem in their house. Mom did not want me to do it but once I did she was glad she did not have to wait for Dad to come home and fix it. Still messing with this thermostat is not my idea of fun but if I don’t I won’t have the right assistance until Christmas Eve. I really hope this drops in price to a point where bulbs would be $19.99 or so and maybe $29.99 for the ones which c

Hi Betty, Thanks for this discovery. I'll probably get this Snoozie app just because the developer seems so interested in supporting accessibility. I think I am going to buy a start package of Philipps Hue in the relatively near future and then I'll report back as to how this all works out.
