RE: Authenticator app?

2021-06-23 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi Adam,

It should work off your apple ID as well as phone number,

Note that if you are working on a mac computer and need to 2fa authenticate and
the code went to an iPad then there is or doesn’t need to be a phone number
involved in that process.

I think it’s more that we have the phone which is why the code is sent to that,

Although I get the code on my watch as well as iPad and iPhone

Good luck,

If I travel outside Australia in the future I don't want to have to use my
Australian number to get codes because of international roaming charges etc.
TIA.

2021-06-23 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
That is one reason why an authenticator app might be a better option although
not every service supports the use of authenticator apps. If an authenticator
app is not supported then text or email would be your only options.

RE: Authenticator app?

2021-06-22 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Except 2-factor authentication doe swork differently for different accounts. If
you choose to use an Authenticator app you typically have to specify this for
whichhever account/service you are using, e.g. Microsoft, Dropbox etc. Then you
set up the account in your authenticator app of choice by scanning a QR code on
your computer's screen or you can manually enter a number. After this as
Christopher said you maybe be prompted to tap on "Approve" or "Allow" and in
some cases there is an extra step where a number is displayed on the screen
where you try to sign in and then in your authenticator app you have 3 numbers
and you have to tap the one which corresponds to the one displayed on your
sign-in screen.
These are simple 2-digit numbers like 14, 32, 44 or whatever and it is just one
extra step to insure that whoever is using the authenticator app is also right
there seeing the screen of whatever service they are trying to sign in for.
Other accounts simply display a 6-digit code in the authenticator app which
changes every 30 seconds and this is more like what you get when a code is
texted or emailed to you. Instead of getting the code from a text message or
email you just open the authenticator app, look at the code for the account you
want and make sure you have at least a bit of time left, e.g. if it says that
it changes in 4 or 5 seconds then it's better to wait for the next code so you
have enough time to enter it. The authenticator app is usually also protected
with Face Id or Touch Id (dpending on the iPhone you use) and there would of
course be a Pin should the biometric verification fail.

An authenticator app is something you can use when you have two factor
authentication enabled. Instead of getting a code sent to you in a text

RE: Authenticator app?

2021-05-25 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I used to use Authenticator and it's fine, but there is also the Microsoft
Authenticator and the Google Authenticator apps. I now use Microsoft
Authenticator and it is also very accessible, but I think Google Authenticator
is as well and if I am not mistaken I read somewhere that Apple has released
one as well. I am more invested in the Microsoft eco system with a personal
Microsoft 365 Home subscription as well as Microsoft 365 business subscriptions
and I have all my Outlook.com accounts set up for 2-factor authentication so
for me the Microsoft Authenticator app works well, but they all essentially do
the same thing.

Google Authenticator app update now more accessible

2013-09-11 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi all. This is just a friendly plug for the Google Authenticator app
which had an update about a week back. if not a week, a few days certainly.

In any case, prior to this update it was not impossible to get your
codes, you had to swipe left and right over and over to eventually hear
the 6 digit code. Now, the codes are read a lot more easily, and you
even have access to the timer so you know when the code is about to
change. Furthermore, you can now edit your entries. When I added a few
2-step verification entries I didn't name them exactly right, and so
wanted to, but could not. Now however I can and that also is a great
change. In the update notes for the app they mention accessibility
improvements.

So, if you are security conscious, and you use 2-step verification for
things like gmail, dropbox, lastpass, Microsoft Outlook, ETC, Google
Authenticator is highly recommended.

Hi, what I do is tap once very 2 seconds on the word code and eventually
after about 10 or 15 seconds I hear the code.

Hope that helps.

You are right. I am nt sure if this makes any difference at all, but I
will double tap the account that I need the code for. As I said, I don't
know if that step is necissary because I still have to wait until the
code pops up. What will help though is locating the account you want and
just flick back and forth between the account name and the code field,
which would be a flick left if you were on the account name. I usually
keep doing this until I hear the code announced then type it in where
needed.
