When I got my iPad Air there was something there about here are some free 
Apple apps to get you started.  So I downloaded the lot.  Now you know what 
I know.  The only one I briefly looked at was garage band.  The apps were 
free when I got them.  I don't care why they were free then.

Yes, that's because new devices purchased after, I believe, September or
October 2013, are entitled to the iWork apps at no cost. For everyone else,
they are not free.

Also, Pages, Keynote, and Numbers are only free for devices purchased after
a certain date (I believe some time in October, 2013). Otherwise they are
