Re: DigitEyes or another bar code reader?

2012-07-09 Thread Nancy M
Hi Sandy,

You can use any bar code scanner you want on Digit-Eyes that works as a
Human Interface Device (HID). This means it emulates what a human would
do on a keyboard.

We support both the tethered ones that hook to your PC/Laptop using a cable
and the mobile ones like the KDC300 that connect to your phone using
BlueTooth.

You will probably not be able to adapt a USB scanner to hook to your
iPhone. The USB scanners require a powered USB connection ("PUSB") and
the iPhone does not support powered USB connections. The reason is that
the iPhone is a low-power device and the USB scanner would drain the
battery. If the USB-connected scanner has its own battery system, it
might be possible, but based on a quick read of the specifications, it does
not look to me like the Metrologic does. I'm not aware of any USB laser
scanner that does not use a powered connection. Here is more information
about powered USB for anyone who is interested:
http://www.poweredusb.org/whatispusb.html

This does not mean that you cannot use Digit-Eyes with a powered USB
device, but it does mean that you will need to run the USB scanner
connected to your desktop or laptop, just like you are running BC Scan. At
NFB, we had some people who tested the BC Scan database side by side with
Digit-Eyes and found that there really is a serious difference in the
database (27 million codes on D-E compared to whatever is on BC Scan).
There is no charge for using Digit-Eyes this way, so you might want to try
it and see if you like the results better.

If you want to connect to the phone, you will need a scanner that has its
own batteries and that uses Bluetooth to connect. The one we liked best
was the Koamtac KDC300. This is not your only option, but of the two we
evaluated, it was easiest to use for people without vision because it is
omnidirectional and the other one we evaluated only scanned in a single
direction.

There are instructions on how to hook up the various scanners on the
Digit-Eyes website:
http://www.digit-eyes.com/laser/

We currently have a Koamtac 200i scanner in-house that we are evaluating
and we'll be publishing a review on it shortly. It fits into a neat glove,
so it can leave that hand effectively free. I've been very impressed with
the Koamtac products, which seem to be very well-engineered. If the
KDC200i works as well as the 300, it could be a nice option for people who
can't or don't want to use visible light scanning.

We'll be publishing the review on our website and if people are interested,
I'll note it here when it is up.

If you don't have a printer, you can get us to print you audio labels on
paper
http://pages.digit-eyes.com/cgi-bin/item.fcgi?itemKey=1922500808&store=%2Fstores%2Fdigiteyes

And if you want labels you can wash or run through the dishwasher, we have
those, too.

I thought the same thing. I phoned my phone carrier and they said
it would not cost more as long as your bn did not go over the
data you have in your plan. I am not sure if all carriers are the
same. You may want to contact your carrier and ask them if using
hotspot is more costly then just using the internet from your
phone.

Hi,
Well, that's a thought. Isn't the hot spot expensive, though?

Re: DigitEyes or another bar code reader?

2012-07-05 Thread erik burggraaf
Sandy, I demonstrated digit-eyes for a workshop at the Canadian hellen keller
centre a couple of weeks ago and I have to say, it was pretty chronic. It
found all the products we swiped although we couldn't get extended information
for anything we identified. That may be to do with the package we bought. I
didn't handle that so I don't know which one it is. We were using IPad 3 on a
stand. We had to be careful about positioning. The lighting in the room was
such that it caused glare in the camera lens and thus failure to recognize the
image of the code. I've been seriously impressed with the support and
development that's gone on in the last 4 or 5 months. There are now two
hand-held barcode reader extensions tested for use with digit-eyes. The CHKC
bought the kdc300 or whatever it is, I always get those letters at the
beginning messed up. Anyhow, that is a rocking little unit for anyone who
can't use the camera for various reasons.

I have red laser on my droid and my ITouch and it's OK. It's free which is
nice. the interface is mostly accessible. It's fast enough at looking up
codes. Unfortunately it's not very good at identifying barcodes for products
outside the US and since most of the world population including myself doesn't
actually live in the US, that's a bit of a liability.

If we get a port of digit-eyes for android, I'd buy it the day it comes out. I
think it's a very exciting product.

What Richard says is 100% correct.

We sell clothing labels (actually they can be washed in the dishwasher too,
so you can also use them to make talking food containers as well).
http://pages.digit-eyes.com/cgi-bin/item.fcgi?itemKey=1922500809&store=%2Fstores%2Fdigiteyes

You scan these with your phone and when it says 'record', you speak aloud
whatever you want recorded about the item. When you scan the label a
second time, you hear your recording. The recording is on the phone, so
you can erase it and re-record as many times as you want. I have
tupperware containers where I stuck a label on with hot melt glue and they
have probably been through the dishwasher a 100 times. Each time, I
record a different title "spaghetti, left from July 3 2012" or whatever.

If you want the paper audio labels, you can buy them from us and we will
mail them to you:
