Is the name of this free app voice? Fred Olver - Original Message - From: Sandratomkins sandratomk...@googlemail.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Wednesday, May 20, 2015 1:48 PM Subject: First impressions of Voice, Take a picture and have it read. Hi, Having seen this app mentioned here, I decided, it being free!!! to download it and take it for a spin on my 6 running 8.3. Once I enabled the camera and turned on the flash, I took a shot of a dog magazine and then did the same with the KNFB Reader app. I have to tell you that, on this one example, this free and tiny app, did as well as the very expensive KNFB reader. I am, by the way, not knocking the latter app, merely wanting to encourage people to give it a try, especially if the KNFB is too pricy for you. The are a few things that could be improved with the interface. If it were possible to simplify and automate rthat than having to press extra buttons, such as the done button, I would say we have an outstanding winner! Always with the proviso that I have only tried it using one example. I liked the way that the app told me that all 4 edges were visible without me needing to use a field of view report button. Plus, I did try opting for the automatic option in settings, but couldn't see how to use it. The 6 page intro seems a bit lacking and I don't understand why, and on this other apps are equally guilty, there seems to be a need for multipage introductions, generally saying nothing of use and yet requiring the use of the page switching button, a thing that often does not work properly. I shall play with this more, but would like to know, as it is so small, do I have to have internet connectivity? Plus, the choice of using VOs built in voices would be nice as I, for example, can understand Danniel much easier than any other voice. So, as a first impression I would suggest to anyone to give it a try, costs nothing and has been designed for the love of doing it and helping. Sandy. I have been swiping right with one finger and nothing happens. Do you have to have voice over on or off. If you have VO off then I don't see how you can hear the button. So far I have not been able to get this app to do anything. Any suggestions on what I am doing wrong? These intro screens are pretty worthless but if you do a three finger swipe from right to left, you'll eventually swipe through the entire introduction and be on the app's main screen. On that main screen starting at the top as you swipe to the right are a settings button at the top left, an app identification label in the top center, and the camera flash on /off button in the top right. If you swipe right again, you'll be on the camera viewfinder which takes up the majority of the screen excluding the top and bottom line controls sections. Another swipe to the right will move you to the bottomline controls the first of which is a filter button. Another swipe right will place you on the crop on/off button. The next swipe will put you on the photo capture button which you use to take the picture. Finally, is the photo library button which is located on the bottom right of the app's main screen. I am running this app on my iPhone 5s. It does not seem possible to select automatic mode with voice-over on so I had to turn off voice-over and select automatic mode. After that it did detect page and took a photograph and then with voice over bk on I double tapped button at bottom right of screen. The app then processed the page and read it out to me well. I do recall that this requires Internet in order to function. RE: First impressions of Voice, Take a picture and have it read.
Sandy, Yes, you need Internet connectivity at the moment for this app, because it does the OCR on line and provides the speech via Google. This may change in future according to the young man who's developed the app. More info in Applevis podcast no. 29, if I remember rightly. It's well worth a listen. Vince. Sandy.
