Ok, each time I try to reply to a posting it sends the message directly to the original poster not the list. I am not sure why this is happening. Please see my response to Jim below.

I may be poking my nose in with bad info but...
Do you have location services turned on? I think that distance tracking requires GPS doesn't it? Steps do not necessarily but I have never seen a case where my Iphone SE 2020 has failed to track my steps.

--Interesting. I tried your suggestion, and it still didn’t work. It’s as though I need my watch on for the health app to work on both my watch and my phone.
Strange. I walked a great deal yesterday, and my phone did not record one step of it. Yet, when I had my watch on, and I looked at the health app via my phone, it recorded the steps I took the day before.
Go figure.

On a holster on my hip, or sometimes in my pocket.
I was bummed because there was a weekend where I had gone on vacation somewhere, and my apple watch wasn’t working for some reason, but my phone was. I had walked about a million steps during those couple days, but they never registered.

You know what is interesting. I use the health app, but it only works for me when I’m wearing my watch. If I don’t wear it, my iPhone won’t pick up my steps. I’m not sure why.
I look at my results on my phone, so I know that the phone is talking to the watch.
I wonder how I can fix this.
