RE: Heos Denon speakers app

2016-01-20 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Adrienne,

I checked a bit more into this Denon system and it looks like they also have a
number of different size speakers and given the success of Sonos it is of
course to be expected that others want a piece of that pie. Keep in mind that
Sonos has also won a lot of awards with their system, their Playbar was rated
best soundbar I think in 2014 and in any case when you read reviews they are
always based on a reviewer hence they are subjective. I used to be very much an
audio file and still have my very expensive system which I purchased around 20
years ago in my music room downstairs and I can assure you that given their
price all the Sonos players sound awesome and if, for example, you were to
combine 2 Play 3 or 2 Play 5 speakers with a Sonos Sub it sounds outright
impressive. Of course at that point you are looking at $1,300 for the Sub and 2
Play 3 or $1,500 for the Sub and 2 Play 5. If you have only a smaller room even
a set of Play 1 sound very nice and they are only $200/each in the US (not sure
what Sonos prices are in the UK).

Best regards,
Sieghard

Hi Sieghard and Brett

Thanks very much for this feedback.

Yes, it sounds like Sonus is a much better bet for us VO users. I was intrigued
by the Denon system appearing in T3 magazines list of the best 12 pieces of
tech on the planet.

I did download the app, but it didn’t really make much sense without a system
to use with it. I also tweeted Denon to ask about accessibility, but have had
no reply.

Can’t help but feel, from what you both say, that Sonus should get my custom
because of their commitment to accessibility.

Thanks again

Adrienne

RE: Sonos accessibility question was Re: Heos Denon speakers app

2016-01-20 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Krister,

I guess you are technically correct although the fact TruePlay isn't accessible
is because Sonos hasn't figured out a way to make it accessible with Voiceover.
I'll see if one of the contacts I had at Sonos from a few years ago when I was
bugging them about accessibility a lot is still there and I'll ask him.

Sieghard

Hi
Speaking of accessibility in the Sonos app, i have 2 questions: Does anyone
know if the trueplay function of Sonos is going to be accessible? If not, we
can’t say it’s fully accessible, we can say it’s about 99.9 percent there.
The other question is has anyone heard anything about the accessibility on the
Mac side of things Sonos? Will it improve?

Re: Heos Denon speakers app

2016-01-18 Thread Brett
Hi Adrian,

I ended up buying a Sonos and don't regret it: the accessibility is great and
the sound is also great.

When researching, I did look at the Heos speakers. You can grab the app
yourself and see what you think of the accessibility, for yourself.

The app is definitely not as accessible as sonos, but looked like it would be
usable for the most part, but there were three issues that turned me offf.

1. The set-up process requires you to connect your iPhone to the speaker with a
3.5MM to 3.5MM cable then follow the set-up instructions. being a Voiceover
user, I couldn't see how I would be able to independantly do this. If I am
paying this kind of money, I don't want to have to rely on sighted assistance
for this.

2. To group or ungroup speakers, you need to drag and drop them. I tried double
tapping and holding to see if I could successfully do this with VoiceOver, but
it didn't appear so.

3. I am not sure of their commitment to accessibility and couldn't find any
references to accessibility when searching their site, as I could un the sonos
site. I wouldn't want to spend this kind of money doing a home set-up only to
find an app update may make the product totally unusable. I am not saying that
this will necessarily happen, but there is that chance. I guess there is that
chance with Sonos as well, but given they are aware of accessibility and do
mention it on there site, I concluded this was less likely with the Sonos
products.

Hope this helps,
Brett.

RE: Heos Denon speakers app

2016-01-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Adrienne,

Do you refer to the Denon "Heos" speakers? I just had a quick look and found
them on Amazon Canada for $329. At that price point I immediately would ask if
these are better than say a Sonos Play 3 which may cost a bit more, but it
gives you access to the entire Sonos ecosystem with all their various speakers,
amps, the Playbar, Sub etc. Sonos I think is clearly the industry leader in
this category and I can assure you that from what I have seen so far no other
system matches the offering of music services you can connect to. In addition
to that the Sonos app is fully accessible and a few years ago it seems Sonos
made a strong commitment to accessibility so one can assume it will continue to
be extremely accessible. Sonos is also fantastic when it comes to pushing out
updates which enhance the system further over time and while they add more
products to the line-up, the actual hardware is very long-lasting. I have
several Connect Amp and Connect units which are now 6 to 7 years old and they
are still currently being sold by Sonos and receive all updates.

Best regards,
Sieghard
