I'd use voice dream reader to read ebooks and audio books. That is
just my opinion.

Hello. I have another question about an iBook. Last week, there was an iBook

this, and can’t find it. Does anybody know if it is still available?
Thanks.

Any voice that is on your Apple device that works as a voiceover voice can be
used with iBooks. That would include the nuance voices, and the Alex voice,
which come with your device. I think you can also purchase voices for the Mac
to be used with voiceover from a company called sepstrel. I'm dictating this
message, so that is probably spelled wrong, but I don't know how to spell it.
You can buy those voices, use them with voiceover, and thus with iBooks on the
Mac. But on an iPhone or iPad, you cannot use, for example, voices that you
purchased to go along with voice dream reader, as those voices do not work as
voiceover voices. So the key is, if it works as a voice over voice, you can use
it. If not, you cannot use it.

I just started looking at the I Books app which I have never tried. It seems

My question is what voice or voices can be used to listen to the text of an i
Book? Is it only the voice that comes with turning on Voiceover on your Apple
device?
If you can purchase other voices, where do you go to purchase these voices, how
are they downloaded and how to you select another voice rather than the
Voiceover voice which comes with the Apple devices? Thanks for any guidance.

Re: I Books- Basic Questions

2016-01-20 Thread Alan Lemly
Christopher,

Thanks for reminding us of the speak screen feature. I have that enabled on my
iPhone but didn't mention it because I'm not really a fan of using that for any
lengthy book reading. I get different volume levels with it and prefer to read
with an app that doesn't feel like a workaround. It does provide another option
which I'm happy to have but I don't seen to use it very often.

Re: I Books- Basic Questions

2016-01-19 Thread Mary Otten

Re: I Books- Basic Questions

2016-01-19 Thread Michael Feir
You don't purchase Voiceover voices on iOS devices. All the available
ones are free. However, you need to do a little work to get a
selection of them. First, you need to go to settings, general,
accessibility, voiceover and speech. In the speech section, you can
choose your default voice. You may also add additional languages to
the rotor. For English-speaking voices, there's UK English,
Audstralian, US, Irish, and South African. For many of these, you can
choose one voice from a few options. The US choices include Alex and
Samantha as well as the SIRI male and female voices. there are at
times compact or enhanced versions of these voices. Alex is by far the
largest voice clocking in at most of a gigabyte. Choose what works
best for you. I have the Alex, male US and female UK and Australian
voices on the language setting of my rotor. Hope that helps.

RE: I Books- Basic Questions

2016-01-19 Thread Alan Lemly
Michelle,

I can't answer your questions since I use Voice Dream Reader for reading
most everything that isn't app specific such as BARD, Audible, etc. I will
say that unless something has changed, iBooks shuts down when your iDevice
goes into locked mode which is one of the reasons I don't use it.

My question is what voice or voices can be used to listen to the text of an

If you can purchase other voices, where do you go to purchase these voices,
how are they downloaded and how to you select another voice rather than the

Re: I Books- Basic Questions

2016-01-19 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi Michelle,

You can use VoiceOver to read your books in iBooks. Another option is to go to
General/Settings/Accessibility and turn on Speak Screen. Then when you open an
iBook, you can ask Siri to read the screen. The advantage is that the text can
be spoken while the screen is locked. I haven't had much luck with this method
recently, however. If you do use this approach, you can use the same area of
settings to choose a voice. You have the same options as you do with VoiceOver.

Best,
Anna

You can get around this by using the speak screen feature. Here's a demo

I just started looking at the I Books app which I have never tried. It
seems that you can read books either in audio format or by having
Voiceover read the text of a book, although each book may not offer both
options.

My question is what voice or voices can be used to listen to the text of
an i Book? Is it only the voice that comes with turning on Voiceover on
your Apple device?

If you can purchase other voices, where do you go to purchase these
voices, how are they downloaded and how to you select another voice
rather than the Voiceover voice which comes with the Apple devices?
Thanks for any guidance. Regards, Michelle Bernstein

Hi,

Use the standard Read All gesture, flicking down with two fingers, to start
reading, or tap the text on the first page you want to read and then flick up
with two fingers to start reading at the top of the screen. Voiceover switches
pages as needed to read continuously.

Hi, Kawal,

There are two ways to switch pages with the Braille display in IBooks. One is
to use dots 1-3-5-space and dots 2-4-6-space from within the text. Another is
to use dots 3- and 6-space from within the page chooser. These keystrokes are
specific to the locations. Are you using dots3
and 6 wit space in the page chooser area?

Re: aProblem with I books.

2013-01-20 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
If I'm in I books, when I get to the page chooser, I use spacebar dots six or
spacebar dots 3 to go back. I did also try space bar o and spacebar ow for some
reason these did not work at times, so I put the speech back on, flicked up two
fingers to read, when the page changed, silence speech, turn speech off with
spacebar M and start reading again. then with speech off, braille display wd
work normally again.

On 21 Jan 2013, at 03:19 AM, Teresa Cochran vegaspipistre...@gmail.com wrote:

I Books with Braille Display.

2013-01-08 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hello.

At last I have mastered how to read I books with Braille Display with speech
turned off. I actually like it and it's better than listening to an I book with
Voice Over. I hope that Dream Reader has Braille display support. Has anyone
used Dream Reader with Braille Display?

RE: I Books with Braille Display.

2013-01-08 Thread Richard Turner
Until he allows VoiceOver to interact with the text, braille won't work with
it.
It sounds like he is going to add good VoiceOver support in the next couple
releases that may then make it possible to use a braille display in Voice
Dream Reader.

 Apple Accessibility

 Hello .

As you may know many IOS developers are producing new technologies for
reading books such as E books on the I phone.

I'd like to see that Apple open their I books up so we as Voice Over users
can import our Ibooks into these other new technologies as some of these
things have high quality voices so that we can listen to our I Books so we as
users have choices of reading our I books either using Voice Over as well as
 other technologies.

 Kind regards,

 Kawal.

As of IOS 5.1 the Humanware Brailliant BI displays work fine with Apple

Apple fixed the Humanware issues and broke all HIMS products and I
believe Braille Connect displays with 5.1.
Now we are waiting for them to fix it again. Nobody knows when they
might see fit to do that since they have been aware of it since the day
they released 5.1.
As a user of the HIMS products, I'm getting a bit tired of Apple's

First, it must be noted that I have never worked with a HumanWare

According to many posts through the past few years, the HumanWare

conflict with iOS control command chords.

Also, the HumanWare displays are reported most often as having
bluetooth stack issues which may prevent regular and stable connection
with the iPhone.

Note: apparently, the Braille Sense displays are having connection
issues since the latest iOS upgrade. I will be able to test a Braille
Edge next week to see how well it works with my iPhone 4 and how well
it works with my Mac.

Given how often HumanWare displays have had complications with iOS
devices, I will not use one as my primary interface device until they
are connection and command stable for a couple software upgrade cycles.

Concerns have been expressed about using iBooks with a braille display.
I connected my Alva BC640 to my iPhone and ran iBooks. Upon loading

to jump to the next page and place me at the start of the page. When I
pressed dots 2 4 6 spacebar, iBooks jumped to the previous page and
placed me at the top of the page.

Therefore, at least the Alva is able to fully function in iBooks
without ever needing to leave the text area. Given that the commands
are chorded with the spacebar, I suspect that other braille displays,
except maybe the humanware displays, should function similarly in iBooks.
