When you get the message that mail doesn’t have any windows, use command and 
the number 0.

When it says no windows open, Command-n would open a new message windows but I 
am not sure whether you can send a new message only by doing this or you can 
reads messages too.

Hi, Tom!
I don’t know exactly what the problem could be, but I think I have had that 
problem as well. What I normally do when that happens is to close the Mail app 
and re-open it. If you’d like, you can reply to me off list and maybe we can 
troubleshoot together? Hope this helps!

You can also use the tab key to jump from list of messages to body of messages

We are starting to learn the Mac, and we can not figure out how to expand a 
thread in mail.  We are avid users of both the iPhone and iPad but we can not 
figure out this tread thing on the Mac.  If anyone has the answer we would sure

If you go to the apples website there is a section dedicated to new mac users. 
In this section is a tutorial on the mac mail app. There are also lots of other
