Hi, Check notification center/messages. In there, one can turn off options related to what is spoken about messages as well as how they would like to have their messages displayed on screen e.g an alert banner etc. If one's messages are being read aloud on the lock screen and while the phone is unlocked, I would turn off the option for message preview. Now a person will only hear who the message is from and not the entire message itself. If one tries this option, please let us know whether this worked for an iphone5s as I remember this question coming up on list awhile back about a similar issue. Hi, I want to thank everyone who gave suggestions on how to solve the automatic reading of text messages. Not sure if this is the total solution but going into notifications and turning off message previews seems to solve the problem. Hello, I had this happen to me a few weeks ago, I upgraded from a 4s to a 5s and the first week it acted as my 4s did when a text would come in, it would say the time and the number of allerts. Then for no real reason it started reading my entire text message out! Like you all I was not ammused by this! I was given some work arounds which worked, but was not what I wanted. I can dig that up for you if you need me to, unless someone knows what the procedure to not have the texts displayed on the lock screen, if memory serves, you go to settingsnotification center show on lock screen and turn this to off. That was one way, but I feel sure there was another way. However, what finally fixed it for me was I wiped my iPhone, re-installed the iOS and as a new device it functioned as it did on my 4s, so I reinstalled my backup from the iCloud from my 5s and the unwanted text message reading commenced again! So, I bought more iCloud space, and put my 4s back up to the cloud, and then wiped my 5s again and did a reinstall from the 4s backup. Now I know this sounds like a lot of work, but I was also missing my custom ringtones, so this actually solved 2 problems I was having. Hope this helps, let me know if I can be of further assistance. To my knowledge, you cannot control how voiceover speaks notifications when the phone is unlocked. However, there is a setting to adjust what happens when a notification comes in on the lock screen. Go into voiceover settings, and then find the item calledspeak notifications on lock screen. Turn this off to have voice over not speak notifications. In iOS7, there is a small bug that causes part or all of the notification to be spoken, but that happens occasionally. Hopefully this will be fixed in an upcoming update.
