Question for Kelly - RE: iPhone 6 vs 6S
I currently have a 5S and am on T-Mobile. I have been a little disappointed that my coverage hasn't been as good when traveling, as it was with AT&T. Referring to your message below, would the 6S give me better coverage than I currently have with the 5S? Apple makes different phones for different regions of the world. Your question implies a universal answer for every square kilometer on earth. If you are in the United States, the 6S supports cell phone band 12. which has lower frequencies. This would enable you to use T-Mobile and enjoy a similar quality of service as Verizon or AT&T. T-Mobile is usually cheaper than the other carriers. You will have much greater coverage and better reception when you are further away from a cell tower or inside buildings then you would with a 6. Re: Question for Kelly - RE: iPhone 6 vs 6S
Karen, I trust you are in the United States. This is an international list and many international users of the list do not have e-mail addresses with country specific domains. T-Mobile also operates in Europe, particularly in northern Europe, Germany and the German speaking countries. The answer to your question though is Most likely yes, depending where you are and to where you travel. T-Mobile has been involved in a multi-year effort to upgrade its network. It was not until 2015 did its entire network support LTE. At the end of 2016, the network reached 310 million Americans. However, band 12 service only reached 240 million. Chicago, where I live, and northeast Illinois in general does not have it yet so I have not used it extensively. T-Mobile made a deal to buy Chicago area band 12 frequencies and the company expects to fully deliver band 12 in Chicago this summer. The company continues to buy band 12 frequencies across the country to cover more people but a full upgrade to match its coverage could take years to negotiate the deals to buy the remaining areas that are less populated. Chicago was the last major metro area that lacked band 12 coverage. It will be necessary to work with a sighted person to review the visual coverage map to identify the kind of coverage available in your area and the places you visit. Currently thanks to band 12, T--Mobile reaches more Americans than AT&T and has announced plans to reach as many Americans as Verizon by the end of 2017. Currently, Verizon has a million square miles more coverage than T-Mobile. It used to be that major metro areas were served well by T-Mobile but not so much the areas between cities. This has changed and is rapidly changing. About 25 percent of Americans live in areas without band 12 service, but that number is rapidly decreasing. I love the prices though. I currently have a prepaid T-Mobile plan that charges $26 a month including the excessive Chicago taxes. It’s $21 without tax. I have a gigabyte of data along with unlimited talk and text. I love T-Mobile’s prices and have accepted the reduced coverage. I’m also the kind of person that sleeps in a hostel bunk bed while traveling and flies discount air carriers. Finally, it is not just the 6s with band 12, it is also the SE and iPhone 7, which is what I use now. Kelly On 2/12/17, Karen Poulakos wrote: > I currently have a 5S and am on T-Mobile. I believe I included the SE in my message. If I did not, I should have. The OP asked about the 6 and 6s though, which is why we have not said much about the SE or 7. RE: Question for Kelly - RE: iPhone 6 vs 6S
Kelly, I am in the US, and actually not far from you. I am in Springfield, IL. I've just found that as we have traveled by car, to other states, I tend to lose service on my 5S more than I did with AT&T. And it does seem to be those areas between cities where the service drops. I had been putting off upgrading. But if I would get better coverage by upgrading, I would do it. Re: Question for Kelly - RE: iPhone 6 vs 6S
the only way to know is to work with a sighted person in examining the T-Mobile coverage map to identify the band 12 availability in central Illinois, southern Indiana, Missouri, and Iowa. If you find it in these areas, you will likely have a much better experience with T-Mobile and a recent model iPhone. I'm looking forward to the upgrade this summer in northeast Illinois. I now have 128 GB of storage on my iPhone and listen to music on my device rather than streaming it in the car or on a long bus trip. I have five to 10 gig of music on my iPhone now and enjoy listening to whole albums or concerts in one sitting during a long drive.
