 Hello,
When I ran the app, it said that it was for use outside the US. It
took for ever to load my location info and then, even though it gave
my address, it said that it couldn't find my address.
So it's probably going to be a while before it's for the US.

ViaOpta Nav is free and pretty easy to use, the menu is very clear

Overall a nice, quick reacting app, given it's still the version

The interface is in English, on my German-speaking iPhone

RE: Any experience with the new ViaOpta Nav app?

2014-09-09 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Barbara,

Since the app isn’t available in Canada I only went by what it said on iTunes.
I had a look at the app from the original link and here it mentioned Novartis
was the developer. Are we talking about the same app? Here is all the
information copied directly from iTunes:

ViaOpta Nav

By Novartis Pharmaceutical Corporation

Description

The aim of this app is to allow a blind/low vision person to move independently
thanks to the ability to walk to a destination starting from their position and
have information useful to facilitate their orientation while moving. This
information is provided and adapted taking into consideration the peculiar
needs of a blind/low vision pedestrian and the app user interface is simple and
easy to use.

The user can enter a destination and get the turn by turn directions from their
current position to that destination. Waypoints can be added to improve the
effectiveness of the calculated route.

While moving the app will also give information on next junctions as well as
distances and directions.

At any time the user can query the app for their position and get it in terms
of street address. A list of junctions around the user, with the corresponding
distances and bearings, can also be obtained.

Information relevant to the user mobility are provided by using the Text To
Speech (even if no screenreader is running).

This app may run in background mode and use the location service, in case the
navigation to a point is set. The use of background GPS may draw heavily on
your device battery. Use this feature only as needed.

Hi Barbara,

Where do you see that the app is developed by the same guys as
Ariadne? The Ariadne developers are from Italy and when I checked out
the Viaopta app it said right at the top where the developer is listed
that it was developed by Novartis which is a huge pharmaceutical
corporation from Switzerland.

Hello guys,

This app is definitely available in Poland and in Germany. It's beeing
developed by the same folks who created Ariadne GPS, I'm not sure why
they've apparently dropped forward developing of Ariadne and started a
new yet similair project.

ViaOpta Nav is free and pretty easy to use, the menu is very clear and
doesn't contain many options. You can check your locations and
intersections close to your location. When on the road, the app
informs you about intersections and POIs, botth taken from OSM (Open
Street Maps), you can also get a proper street to street navigation
based on the TomTom maps.

Overall a nice, quick reacting app, given it's still the version 1.0,
hopefully we'll see it improving in the future.

The interface is in English, on my German-speaking iPhone interface
the app menus are properly translated into German but the terms of use
which you're about to accept each time you're launching the app are in
English only for the time being.

Kind regards,

Barbara

Hi Jared,

I just had a look at your link and it will bring up the app, but
in the Zimbabwe app store. You can tell which app store an address
is from by looking at the 2 letters after https://itunes.apple.com/

Anyhow, it appears the app is available in the United States, but

Too bad since at least the description sounds OK. The developer,
Novartis Pharmaceutical Corporation, is according to Wikipedia
also the largest pharmaceutical company with respect to sales

Very nice of them to make a free app for the blind, isn’t it? I
guess they would have the resources to do a good job, I mean
what’s a million or two or even 5 for a company like that. It
would, however, be nice if they provided a list of countries where
the app works.

Let’s also see if there will be regular updates and new features.

Maybe KNFB Reader should have gone to them for a bit of funding,
then maybe the KNFB Reader app would have cost 99 Cents instead of
99 Dollars. After all, according to prescription drugs, over the
counter drugs, vaxines, animal drugs the company is also into

Sorry if this was already answered, but a rooted phone is a term used in
Android that means roughly the same thing as a jail broken phone. From
the discussions I've seen on both Android and IOS lists, this app
doesn't need a jail broken or rooted phone to work.

So it's probably going to be a while before it's for the US.

My initial impression is that this could be a nice app. I haven't taken it

I didn't have too much luck with the navigation. It keeps telling me
my device is off route, but when I tell it to find the route, it
doesn't seem to. Also could only get walking routes. But I was more

ViaOpta Nav is free and pretty easy to use, the menu is very clear and
doesn't contain many options. You can check your locations and intersections
close to your location. When on the road, the app informs you about
intersections and POIs, botth taken from OSM (Open Street Maps), you can
also get a proper street to street navigation based on the TomTom maps.
Overall a nice, quick reacting app, given it's still the version 1.0,
hopefully we'll see it improving in the future.
The interface is in English, on my German-speaking iPhone interface the app
menus are properly translated into German but the terms of use which you're
