RE: Any experience with the new ViaOpta Nav app?
Hi Barbara, Since the app isn’t available in Canada I only went by what it said on iTunes. I had a look at the app from the original link and here it mentioned Novartis was the developer. Are we talking about the same app? Here is all the information copied directly from iTunes: ViaOpta Nav By Novartis Pharmaceutical Corporation Description The aim of this app is to allow a blind/low vision person to move independently thanks to the ability to walk to a destination starting from their position and have information useful to facilitate their orientation while moving. This information is provided and adapted taking into consideration the peculiar needs of a blind/low vision pedestrian and the app user interface is simple and easy to use. The user can enter a destination and get the turn by turn directions from their current position to that destination. Waypoints can be added to improve the effectiveness of the calculated route. While moving the app will also give information on next junctions as well as distances and directions. At any time the user can query the app for their position and get it in terms of street address. A list of junctions around the user, with the corresponding distances and bearings, can also be obtained. Information relevant to the user mobility are provided by using the Text To Speech (even if no screenreader is running). This app may run in background mode and use the location service, in case the navigation to a point is set. The use of background GPS may draw heavily on your device battery. Use this feature only as needed. ViaOpta Nav. Free Category: Navigation Released: 21 August 2014 Version: 1.0 Size: 8.6 MB Languages: English, Arabic, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Turkish Developer: Novartis Pharmaceutical Corporation © 2014 Novartis Pharmaceuticals You must be at least 17 years old to download this application. Re: Any experience with the new ViaOpta Nav app?
Sorry if this was already answered, but a rooted phone is a term used in Android that means roughly the same thing as a jail broken phone. From the discussions I've seen on both Android and IOS lists, this app doesn't need a jail broken or rooted phone to work. On 9/9/2014 1:28 AM, Sieghard Weitzel wrote: What is a :rooted phone? Wow, I was sure confused by this one. It is developed by Novartis Pharmaceuticals, at least that's how it is listed in the U.S. store. My initial impression is that this could be a nice app. I haven't taken it out walking yet, but it looks like the interface is easy enough. It's beeing developed by the same folks who created Ariadne GPS, I'm not sure why they've apparently dropped forward developing of Ariadne and started a new yet similair project. ViaOpta Nav is free and pretty easy to use, the menu is very clear and doesn't contain many options. You can check your locations and intersections close to your location. When on the road, the app informs you about intersections and POIs, botth taken from OSM (Open Street Maps), you can also get a proper street to street navigation based on the TomTom maps. Overall a nice, quick reacting app, given it's still the version 1.0, hopefully we'll see it improving in the future. The interface is in English, on my German-speaking iPhone interface the app menus are properly translated into German but the terms of use which you're about to accept each time you're launching the app are in English only for the time being.
