Re: apple tv 4th gen apps accessibility going down hill
I agree as I had the Apple 3rd Gen and bought the 4th Gen, and consider the Apple TV 4th Gen the worst investment I have ever made. I believe with the Apple TV 3rd Gen that Apple controlled the Apps and made them VO accessible, now with the 4th Gen Apple TV the individual developers control their apps and most of them are not accessible. Absolutely pathetic the direction of the 4th Gen Apple TV is headed. > On Mar 25, 2017, at 11:13 PM, Sieghard Weitzel <siegh...@live.ca> wrote: > > An interesting suggestion and one Apple of course could well afford. An interesting suggestion and one Apple of course could well afford. It would be nice if something like this could be brought directly to the attention of Tim Cook, but I am doubtful that posting this via social media or in an email to Apple Accessibility will ever make it up the chain. Of course we have to continue to lobby for our needs and hope that the overall commitment Apple has towards accessibility in time results in a net gain and not a net loss. RE: apple tv 4th gen apps accessibility going down hill
Hi, I was very disappointed with many of the apps I have tried lately. I purchased an Apple TV 4 even though my third gen worked fine because I wanted access to the thousands of channels instead of the 20 or 30 that were available on the third gen. Ok apps as they call them not channels. Anyway, it seems that every time I find an app I really want such as Dove which allegedly has hundreds of hours of family programming. It is not the least bit accessible. As in nothing was labeled to work with voiceover. I have become accustomed to not being able to play games since losing my vision several years ago and not playing graphically intensive games on a PlayStation 4 or other console device. But when I try a news app or a network app and it simply does not allow any voiceover control at all I get very frustrated. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Jim Ruby Sent: Saturday, March 25, 2017 1:20 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: apple tv 4th gen apps accessibility going down hill Hi, is it just me? RE: Apple TV 4th Gen questions
They are called apps but they can either be considered channels or apps depending on how you look at it. For example currently there are about 900 available apps for the Apple TV fourth Generation ranging from Netflix and Hulu to games and podcast applications, and even a speedtest application, to common channel apps such as CVS and freeform formerly ABC Family. Some of these channel apps require that you have the same channel on your cable subscription such as Disney channels. Others do not. Some will allow you limited access to programing if you do not have the corresponding channel on your cable subscription but will not allow you to have access to the full amount of programing options. ESPN is a good example of that. You get a few clips and a lot of annoying ads unless you validate your cable provider on the Apple TV. Once that is done you have access to at least 7 channels of ESPN plus bonus material free for the price of downloading the channel from the app store for free. Hope that helps' Merv -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Wayne Merritt Sent: Monday, April 25, 2016 2:54 PM To: viphoneSubject: Apple TV 4th Gen questions All, I am looking at getting the 4th generation Apple TV. I've got a couple of questions. First of all, I know that it is not a "tv", but I have heard conflicting reports about Apple TV having channels, like some Cable channels, where one can watch TV shows. Is this true, or are shows mainly watched using apps that one downloads onto the Apple TV? Would I need an antenna or Cable subscription in order to watch TV shows? The other big thing is can I record shows and watch them later on the Apple TV, like one could do with some early services like Tivo? I love mine save for the fat that our CBC news is limited. For example, I cannot obtain local news coverage with it as I can on CBC news on the iPad. *** “In the old days, it was not called the Holiday Season; the Christians called it 'Christmas' and went to church; the Jews called it 'Hanukkah' and went to synagogue; the atheists went to parties and drank. People passing each other on the street would say 'Merry Christmas!' or 'Happy Hanukkah!' or (to the atheists) 'Look out for the wall!” ― Dave Barry > On Dec 16, 2015, at 3:14 AM, MamaPeachwrote: > > I don't regret buying mine. Re: Apple TV 4th Gen
I have a four week old Apple TV fourth generation. It is very much worth money. If you don't do a lot of gaming, blue 32 GB is your best bet that's what I have. I can't give the Mac Mall I know if I praises about their customer service and how quickly they do shipping and handling. I wore this device on November 10, and guess what showed up the next day? They ship out of Memphis by the way. You can order online or order by phone like I did. I'd be glad to give out the phone number if you need it. As far as shipping and handling, they only charge me $10.59. That's a just about unheard of for overnight shipping. Unless you're high partial, you will need a very minimum of cited assistance. My television is 720 P, and the device is 1080 P. So, you'll need to go into the Apple TV settings and calibrate your TV to your TV's correct number of pixels. It's pretty easy to do. You would need site to be able to see the little apple and then you get the OK sign. Hope I can help somebody sorry about the typos Sent from my iPhone > On Dec 15, 2015, at 8:11 PM, Larry Lumpkinwrote: > > It has gotten mixed reviews here but I think it is well worth buying even > though we know it has some growing to do. Re: Apple TV 4th Gen, no voice over in Hulu
hi, I just had a question about accessability. didn't apple create a code enjen or code script or bundle or something that m makes building accessability in fairly simple? Could we just point his out to developers? I remember listening to a podcast from cool blind tek about apple accessability and a script and how easy it was to make something inaccessable accessable. Well, I hope you are right. It is discouraging when companies like Hulu, which of been around and which know about accessibility, because they have been badgered about it, still don't get it right. Hi, Do you know if they’re working on audio description, too? I sent them a note, and they said something like, “It’s very complicated.” When I replied to that that they may be able to have a button adjacent to the Play episode button labeled as Play audio described episode which would be dimmed if an AD episode was not available, or to have a partitioned website from the home screen listing audio described content, they replied they’d pass those ideas along to the engineers. RE: Apple TV 4th Gen, no voice over in Hulu
Hi Mary, Yes, apps may have to be made accessible with TVOS now just as they have to be made accessible with iOS, but just because some developers may not have done so or maybe have not done so yet because it’s all new to me still means I love the new apple TV because it can do so much more than the old one. When everything is said and done there will still be a ton more apps many of which will be accessible and as the popularity of the Apple TV grows so will awareness about accessibility. But even now I totally love that when I watch a movie I can simply push the SIRI button and say “What did he say” or “Rewind 3 minutes”, searching for movies with SIRI works great and I just think this is only the start. I have already heard how this apple TV is more like a Beta, that it’s unfinished and surely Apple could have done better given how long it’s been since they have last updated the Apple TV. I can sort of agree with this, but playing devil’s advocate or maybe I should say “Apple’s advocate” one could also argue that while this is the next generation Apple TV it is very much almost a new device. The hardware is new, the remote is new and the platform (TVOS) is also totally new. App developers only had a few months to come up with apps and Apple is still hammering out deals with all the major networks and content providers for the actual TV offering. I’m certainly willing to cut them some slack and give them a year or so to see what they come up with. I guess I choose to see it from the “glass half full” perspective rather than the “glass half empty” perspective. As for accessibility, all of us individually as well as whatever organisations represent us as a group will just have to continue to lobby for accessibility and make developers aware of the fact that their app may not be accessible.
