RE: Are you still using Be My Eyes?

2019-04-28 Thread R Van Lant
Delighted to hear that many are still using Be My Eyes. I will let my coworker
know and will also give it a try myself. I’m so glad for the reminder about
Microsoft Accessibility being contacted through this app. I’ve been meaning to
contact them and I think being able to show them the issues I’m having would be
stellar, especially since I’m not sure if my company firewall would allow them
to remote into my work computer.

I use Be My Eyes at least once or twice a week and find them very helpful for
what I need. I’m so glad there are people who are willing to give a bit of
their time to help. In all the years I’ve used it I’ve only had one or two
calls where I didn’t get the help I needed. One was due to a poor connection
and that got resolved and I got the info I needed. My thanks goes out to all
who volunteer.
God bless!

Just curious of people are still using Be My Eyes. I haven’t tried it yet, but
ran into a coworker last week who said her former employer encouraged employees
to volunteer for it. She did it a couple times, but didn’t get a request for
help and hasn’t logged back in. I love the idea of AIRA and tried it today at
Walgreen’s, since access is free there, but I wondred if Be My Eyes is still

Absolutely, Be My Eyes doesn’t show any signs of scaling back or becoming
irrelevant. As Richard mentioned, they recently added Google Accessibility to
their specialized help section so now you can contact Microsoft and Google this
way. Hopefully they’ll get Apple and other large companies like Amazon onboard.
I haven’t used the Google support yet, but find that I get a Microsoft
accessibility agent on the line faster and while this may have been
coincidence, the ones I spoke with via Be my Eyes seemed better trained than
some of the ones I spoke with on the phone. Below are the stats from their

they have over 16 volunteer helpers for each visually impaired user:

2,111,806 VOLUNTEERS

Aira is also a fantastic service and I do subscribe to their starter plan which
gives me up to 30 minutes of support for $29 a month, there is a current
promotion where if you sign up for 1 month you get another 2 for free so $29
would get you 3 month of 30 minutes of monthly Aira support. Their agents have
a lot more tools available to them, e.g. being able to take pictures for you
through your camera, being able to connect to your computer to help, for
example, to fill out an inaccessible web form etc. So far my Aira calls have
all been a fantastic experience and often I just need help with something which
takes a minute or 2. Remember that anything you try to do with Jaws which can’t
be done because of Jaws you can also do a free call to Aira since Vispero

2019-04-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I agree that it’s too bad that Aira doesn’t roll over at least a portion of
unused minutes, they could limit it but at least say they will roll over 15 or
20% of unused minutes for say 1 or 2 months. I can understand that maybe they
don’t want to do this unlimited since the service I think is not designed for
somebody to say not use their 30 minute plan for 4 months and then request an
Aira agent to watch a 2 hours movie with them describing what’s going on.

I most definitely am! I don’t want to be restricted to the confines of a plan
for which any unused portion might not roll over, plus, since I’m not doing
outdoor travel, be my eyes serves my needs quite well.

RE: Are you still using Be My Eyes?

2019-04-28 Thread Paul and Paula Jordan

I love the idea of AIRA and tried it today at
Walgreen’s, since access is free there, but I wondred if Be My Eyes is still
relevant as a free option.

RE: Are you still using Be My Eyes?

2019-04-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
You can’t compare the two, one is free and one is rather expensive and you get
trained agents. For many basic things Be My Eyes can be just as good and most
of the calls I made to Be My Eyes have been quite positive also. Then there is
their specialized help section which allows you to contact Microsoft and Google
Accessibility and that is entirely unique. Yes, you can call Microsoft
Accessibility by phone, but Google has no phone support whatsoever but they
offer live support via Be My Eyes.

Also, realize that Be My Eyes are volunteers, and there are over 2 million
volunteers and only a bit over 100 thousand blind users; so the chances of
getting someone new is rather high and volunteers are going to go a long time

Not only is it still relevant, but it is the only way I know of to contact
