Both announce intersections. The main difference is that Seeing Eye has turn
by turn included in the app, while BS has to use another app like Google or
Apple maps.

Re: Blind Square vs. Seeing Eye GPS

2015-06-19 Thread Mike Arrigo
I much prefer blind square. It provides more information without you
having to touch your screen. The seeing ehe app will announce streets,
but only when you arrive at them, where as blindsquare will announce
approaching streets from a distance. Also, blindsquare will frequently
announce your current address and how far you have traveled. It doesn't
have turn by turn directions the way the seeing eye app does but you
can use other apps for that. H, maybe I should do a pod cast
comparing those 2 apps.

I find how Blindsquare announces stuff very unreliable. Sometimes I walk and it
suddenly starts to constantly announce how far I travelled as in every few
seconds and since I have a Seeing-Eye subscription for 3 years at this point I
have taken Blindsquare off my device. I don't need GPS that often and prefer

Re: Blind Square vs. Seeing Eye GPS

2015-06-19 Thread Grant
Hi Sieghard, the random announcements about your distance were likely caused by
your phone being awake and its accelerometer being triggered. You can turn this
off so that BlindSquare doesn’t react when your phone is shaken. This would
solve that particular problem.

Re: Blind Square vs. Seeing Eye GPS

2015-06-19 Thread Grant
BlindSquare has a number of features that SeeingEye GPS lacks, such as the
ability to mark your own points of interest. I use this all the time to mark
bus bays, the entrances to train stations, and so forth. It is a great
indication to keep me on track as I’m getting on and off busses and walking
around. In my experience, BlindSquare is significantly friendlier in terms of
battery life and can therefore be used for far longer in between charges.
BlindSquare also can be operated via an external accessory such as the Apple
headset remote, which means you can get info and mark points of interest
without needing to take your phone out of your pocket and unlock it.
BlindSquare also supports displaying messages and receiving commands via a
Braille display.

In truth, SeeingEye GPS is a very basic app in comparison, and in my view has
seen only minor updates since it launched. BlindSquare is quite feature rich,
and is regularly updated with new features. However, SeeingEye GPS does have
two features that BlindSquare lacks. Those are the ability to have
intersections described in more detail, whereas BlindSquare just announces the
street names; as well as integrated turn by turn directions. Both apps offer a
feature whereby you can spin your phone around and hear intersections and
places in a given direction. Of course, you should be certain to check which
countries are supported by each app before purchase, as I do not remember this
off hand but I recall it is quite limited.

Both announce intersections. The main difference is that Seeing Eye has turn

Both announce intersections. The main difference is that Seeing Eye has turn by

Hi Sieghard,

Your problem with Blind Square is probably in the fact that you were shaking
your phone. Either you had it around your neck and it your phone was bouncing
around or you were making quick moves with the phone in your hands. I had a
friend who had that problem and I turned off her shake phone commands and her

I find how Blindsquare announces stuff very unreliable. Sometimes I walk and it
suddenly starts to constantly announce how far I travelled as in every few
seconds and since I have a Seeing-Eye subscription for 3 years at this point I
have taken Blindsquare off my device. I don't need GPS that often and prefer
how the Seeing Eye app gives me information. I guess that goes to show how
subjective this is, just like TTS voices and bluetooth headsets.

Re: Blind Square vs. Seeing Eye GPS

2015-06-20 Thread Andy Baracco
I wonder if immediate conditions determine when you get these announcements.
Yesterday these announcements either came when we were at the intersection,
or shortly after.

Hi,

In Blind Square you can adjust how early you want to hear an intersection.
You can set it to short medium or long. The default is medium.

I much prefer blind square. It provides more information without you having
to touch your screen. The seeing ehe app will announce streets, but only
when you arrive at them, where as blindsquare will announce approaching
streets from a distance. Also, blindsquare will frequently announce your
current address and how far you have traveled. It doesn't have turn by turn
directions the way the seeing eye app does but you can use other apps for
that. H, maybe I should do a pod cast comparing those 2 apps.

Original message:

Hello,

Can anyone currently using BlindSquare and Seeing Eye GPS draw any
comparisons in the current versions? I tried BlindSquare over a year
ago, didn't care for it and got a refund. Now that I'm finding myself
looking for more points of interest, I'm revisiting the possibility of
purchasing one or the other. It seems BlindSquare talks to map apps
for turn by turn directions, so what would the compelling reason be to
take out a subscription with the GPS app? I do like that the Seeing
Eye app can rely on Google Places. I trust that more than FourSquare,
but that in of itself is not a deal breaker. Any thoughts on the
current products would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
