RE: Echo or Alexa Show

2021-03-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Sonos enabled Alexa speakers can do almost everything an Echo can do, one thing
they can't yet do is make a phone call or let you use the Drop-In feature of
Alexa. I have an Echo Show 5 at my office at my store which is connected to my
Amazon account just as are our Echo speakers at home. There we have an Echo
Show 10 in the living room, my wife has an Echo Dot 4th Gen in the bedroom with
clock display and we have Sonos One speakers in the bathroom, the kitchen and
in my woodworking shop as well as a Sonos Move which is also Alexa capable.
Anyways, it is nice when I am in my office and my wife is at home, I can simply
say to Alexa to drop in at the living room and almost instantly a two-way voice
intercom channel is opened and my wife and I can talk.

All Alexa devices will respond to the same commands.
I have the Sonos speakers with Alexa as well as the Amazon Alexa app on my
iPhone. I do not own an Echo device but can do all the same things with Alexa
on these other platforms.
And, all Alexa devices can control your smart home devices. We happen to have
a thermostat that is controlled over Wi-Fi and I connected it to alexa, so now
I can say to the speakers “Alexa, turn the thermostat to 71 degrees.
WE also got an Air Fryer that I can control with Alexa.
Pretty slick.

The echo shows have a neat feature called “ show and tell” and they work simply
by asking “Alexa, what am I holding in my hand?” Most times they are pretty
accurate. You do not need to do anything differently with them than a normal
regular echo dot. In some cases information be displayed on the screen,
however echo shows have a screen reader called voice view which is quite
similar to the iPhone’s voice over so there’s not much of al earning curve
there. You can watch videos other than prime on them.
Hope this was helpful.

Subject: Echo or Alexa Show

Me again.
I just looked up "Amazon Show" and became overloaded when reading about
displays. I do not intend to use a device to control temperature or lock doors
or need to look at a clock, anything like that. I also do not want a device
that will require me to do anything in response to what shows on a screen.
I was thinking I would get a second device for another room but
one that could play movies, not just Prime, but Netflix too,and possibly Hulu
somewhere down the line.
Would that device be compatible with the Echo 4th generation I
already have? Would I talk to it like I talk to my other device?
I wonder if Amazon's customers with disabilities could answer
these questions and give me a honest good recommendation.
I'll see if the podcasts someone already recommended will cover
this, or maybe I will have to go to YouTube and let it squeeze hours out of the
rest of my day, but only after the dog and I get a proper walk!

In order to listen to the Dot-2-Dot podcast on your Echo device, you have to
ask Alexa to play something like “Play the Daily Skills Podcast” or something
similar. I can’t remember exactly what the command is because I don’t listen
to podcast on my Echo device.

Re: Echo or Alexa Show

2021-03-04 Thread Danny Keys
Hi,
I had an echo show and I liked the what am I holding feature
However, I did have a problem with using voice view for selecting movies. The
screen would just click and pop, and I was never able to find the icon for
starting movies. My son said that when voice view was off, he was able to pick
the icon and start a movie.
I did report this to the folks in the accessibility group at amazon.
If this problem ever gets corrected, I may reconsider another echo show.

Re: Echo or Alexa Show

2021-03-04 Thread Brad Snyder
You might find it more beneficial to direct your questions to a list devoted to
using the Amazon Echo device, rather than a list for iPhone users.
Such a list exist, and you or anyone else can join it by sending a blank email
to the following address:

echoing+subscr...@groups.io

RE: Echo or Alexa Show

2021-03-04 Thread Richard Turner
All Alexa devices will respond to the same commands.
I have the Sonos speakers with Alexa as well as the Amazon Alexa app on my
iPhone. I do not own an Echo device but can do all the same things with Alexa
on these other platforms.
And, all Alexa devices can control your smart home devices. We happen to have
a thermostat that is controlled over Wi-Fi and I connected it to alexa, so now
I can say to the speakers "Alexa, turn the thermostat to 71 degrees.
WE also got an Air Fryer that I can control with Alexa.
Pretty slick.

The echo shows have a neat feature called " show and tell" and they work simply
by asking "Alexa, what am I holding in my hand?" Most times they are pretty
accurate. You do not need to do anything differently with them than a normal
regular echo dot. In some cases information be displayed on the screen,
however echo shows have a screen reader called voice view which is quite
similar to the iPhone's voice over so there's not much of al earning curve
there. You can watch videos other than prime on them.
Hope this was helpful.
