the biggest difference is that you don't get burned with the Instant Pot you
take a grave chance the old fashion way. You also don't have to monitor the
pressure like you do the old way.

Yes, what you say is exactly true, it is an electric pressure cooker, but
unlike the stove top models which have been around forever, it was market as
something completely new and revolutionary with all the different programs and
basically it was a reinvention of the wheel. But of course we see this with
many "smart" technologies, I mean how long have light switches been around? How
about wall outlets or light bulbs? The answer is for a very long time, but now
they add Wi-Fi connectivity and make it sound like it's the latest new
invention.

all the instant pot is is an electric pressure cooker. you are still making
things from scratch. people have been cooking under pressure for ever. it was
easy convenient, and quick, and you get perfect rice everytime. it might not be
branded “instant pot” but these devices are going nowhere, and I’m glad for it.

RE: Enjoy your Instant Pot while it lasts - the company has filed for bankruptsy

2023-06-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
That is true, but some key facts from the article are:

In court filings, the company says it generated operating cash flows of just
$17.9 million US in the first three months of the year. That relatively meagre
figure is a sharp contrast to the more than $500 million US worth of debt on
its books.
So, if they have similar revenues for the rest of the year this means they will
make 71.6 Million in sales and even if there is a bump in the second half of
the year due to higher sales around Black FRiday, Christmas and so on, they are
paying almost 50 Million in interest given the current interest rates.

The company says it has lined up more than $133 million in funding to cover
expenses such as employee salaries and benefits, pension obligations, paying
suppliers and other obligations while it tries to restructure.
That means whatever is left after paying interest will not go too far to cover
salaries and operating costs.

S&P downgraded the company last week and warned that "absent external funding
or debt relief, we anticipate Instant Brands will face a liquidity shortfall
over the near term."
Snyder says the company is trying to buy time to come up with a solution that
will let them continue to operate, but "it's really up to the creditor at this
point because of the size of the debt, whether they are going to let them
continue to fund losses."
"They took on too much debt and now you have a company that was moderately
profitable now underwater because of the debt load," he said. "That's a tale as
old as time."
He says he wouldn't be surprised to see the company be forced to liquidate.

Market research firm Circana says the product category of "electronic
multicooker devices" which is dominated by Instant Pot, hit $758 million
worldwide in 2020.
By 2022, industry-wide sales had plunged 50 per cent to $344 million.

This last bit about the 50% drop in sales for these types of devices in just 2
years to me is a pretty clear trend which shows the short-lived nature of such
devices, in some ways such companies live and die through Amazon wjhere the
majority of the product is sold and where the hipe about it is generated.

It’s important to recognize the difference between the two different kinds of
bankruptcy filings. Instant filed under Chapter 11, which means they are trying
to re-organize, not just go out of business. Apparently they do have a
financing group ready to infuse more money into their business, but it Hass to
be approved by whoever it is that is in charge of bankruptcies. So it may still
be around after re-organization, or it could go away via the chapter 7
bankruptcy, in which case, it is in fact gone.

I agree. They filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. I quote

The bankruptcy process will not impact the ability to purchase products as
Instant Brand will operate as usual with the help of $132.5 million in new
financing.

RE: Enjoy your Instant Pot while it lasts - the company has filed for bankruptsy

2023-06-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Definitely there are other options and some have been discussed on here,. One I
believe was from a company called Cosori, but many exist from well-known brands
like T-Fal, Breville and others.
My article was simply meant as an interest read for those who have Instant Pots
and have an interest in this sort of device.
Checking on Amazon Canada I actually now again saw the Instant Pot Smart Cooker
being offered for $199 which is a pretty good price, but I think I still pass
especially knowing that the company may go under; then who knows what happens
to the app and all that. In any case, I have a feeling for us it would simply
be an expensive rice cooker and I have had one which works perfectly fine for
probably 10 years or more and all I have to do to start rice cooking is press a
single button.
Stove top pressure cookers have been around for a long time, I am 56 and I
remember that my Mom had a stove top pressure cooker when I was a child so
probably at least 45 or maybe 50 years ago back in Germany. Of course it didn't
have fancy programs for this and that, but it still did the same thing. It
almost seems to me like these pressure cookers are now a little bit what bread
makers were in the late 90's. They were all the craze then and while they of
course still exist and some people may use them, they certainly aren't as
popular now as they were 25 years ago and I bet in the year 2043 one could say
the same thing about the popularity of the Instant Pot in 2019 to 2021.

I am not a user of the Insta pot or any other pressure cooker.
However, I did a quick duckduckgo.com search for Smart Pressure Cooker and
found one by Chef IQ at Amazon. Regular price $200, with the 20% off coupon on
the site it is $160.

I know nothing else or if the app is accessible, but just offer this as a
confirmation that other smart pressure cookers exist.

I’ve had my Bluetooth IP for eight or so years now. I always expected it to
last longer than the supported app and for a while, that seemed to be the case
until I guess enough people complained about the situation where they put out
an app update. I suppose now we’ll see how long the Bluetooth app continues to
function. Although, Fresco which also supports “smart” appliances including
Instant Pot is still going strong, so maybe that’ll be an option for WiFi model
owners… Who knows, maybe the API will end up being open source too…
I don’t’ know about “traditional” and all. I mean, use the tools available to
you. It’s basically a pressure cooker and what’s untraditional about that? I
still use my IP all the time. I expect I’ll just have to mark up the buttons
when the app finally gives up the ghost, but it’s not like it’s going to or
should keel over any time soon. Bummer they’re going belly up though. I
haven’t really paid attention since I have no need for one, but I’m guessing
there are other smart options similar to what the IP does out there by now.

RE: Enjoy your Instant Pot while it lasts - the company has filed for bankruptsy

2023-06-14 Thread Richard Turner

I know many on the list bought into the Instant Pot craze about 4 or 5 years
ago, I kept considering it and was waitiand waiting for the new Smart model
(not the Bluetooth one) to come out and to be available for a reasonable price
here in Canada. At one point it was somewhat reasonable, but I thought it would
go on sale again and then it didn't and then it seemed to disappear. Now I just
came across an article on CBC News about Instant Brands which apparently came
into existance when Instant Pot and Corelle Brands merged, another rwell-known
brand which is part of that company's port folio is Pyrex cookware. In the
article it says that Instant Brands has gone into Chapter 11 bankruptsy
protection and that the assets of the company may be liquidated. Of course it
is quite possible that maybe some other outfit picks up some or all of the
pieces although I believe the era of the Instant Pot and similar all-in-one
cooking appliances has passed and was nothing more than a fad. In the end I am
glad I didn't get one of these gadgets as I actually do like cooking according
to more traditional methods making things from scratch and with local
ingredients including those we grow in our own garden in the summer and fall. .

Re: Enjoy your Instant Pot while it lasts - the company has filed for bankruptsy

2023-06-14 Thread Mary Otten
It’s important to recognize the difference between the two different kinds of bankruptcy filings. Instant filed under Chapter 11, which means they are trying to re-organize, not just go out of business. Apparently they do have a financing group ready to infuse more money into their business, but it Hass to be approved by whoever it is that is in charge of bankruptcies. So it may still be around after re-organization, or it could go away via the chapter 7 bankruptcy, in which case, it is in fact gone.Sent from my iPhoneOn Jun 13, 2023, at 11:40 PM, Sieghard Weitzel wrote:

all the instant pot is is an electric pressure cooker. you are still making
things from scratch. people have been cooking under pressure for ever. it was
easy convenient, and quick, and you get perfect rice everytime. it might not be
branded “instant pot” but these devices are going nowhere, and I’m glad for it.

Subject: Enjoy your Instant Pot while it lasts - the company has filed for
bankruptsy

In the end I am
glad I didn't get one of these gadgets as I actually do like cooking according
to more traditional methods making things from scratch and with local
ingredients including those we grow in our own garden in the summer and fall. .
For anybody who is interested, here is a link to the article:

Instant Brands, maker of Instant Pot and Pyrex cookware, files for bankruptcy

  Best regards,

  Sieghard
