Based on how much is written you will get a partial reading. if they wrote a 
lot then you will have to open it to get the full message. Also consider 
that it only reads the last message. So if they sent you multiple messages 
you will have to open it or miss whatever else they may have written.

Settings
Siri
Allow Notifications

I am not sure this is what you are wanting, but can't hurt. If you don't like 
it, you know where it is to turn off.

I get who the text is from now but I have to open it up to read it.

I was thinking that there is a setting to get the text to read out loud as soon 
as it comes in.
