I just tried this on my iPhone 5s ios 8.4 and the 3 finger swipe downwards does work to move back through the previous bits of conversation. This works for me. I just go to the first message displayed and then flicking left takes me back through the previous messages. That has been an issue since 7 for me, I am constantly trying to see the first part of a message when one friend keeps sending them faster than I can find and read them. Three finger flick up will take you to the next page, three finger flip down will taking to the previous page.
