I did it the other way round. I added the Apple TV app to the SamSung TV and use the SamSung remote on the SamSung to access Apple TV, so I don't need the physical Apple TV at all.
That is partly why we bought the SamSung TU8000 Smart TV. I think my sighted wife helped with a lot of the setup so I don't remember the step-by-step process. But if you get into the Apps screen on the TV, you can open Apple TV or add it if it isn't there, and then log in with your Apple ID. Easier done with a keyboard or a sighted helper.
