RE: New Apple TV In The Apple Store
Hi. One thing I like about the Apple TV is what it offers for the U.S. major sports, MLB, NFL, NBA and NHL. You can watch archived games for each sport. This will be handy for me, since the World Series and the NFL will be on at the same time this Sunday. I’ll have the World Series on, which, by the way, the live radio feeds of the teams is available on the Apple TV. Later on I’ll tune into the NFL broadcast. These offerings aren’t cheap, but for me it’s worth having them available. Kevin Minor, Lexington, KY -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list. I do stand corrected. When I purchased my Apple TV, I could have sworn it was a 2nd generation, but looking at the model number on the bottom of the unit, it is indeed a 3rd generation and you are right, that is why I do still have YouTube on mine. -Original Message- From: Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Monday, October 26, 2015 11:23 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: New Apple TV In The Apple Store Hi, OK, so I checked into this Youtube thing a bit more and on second generation Apple TV they are definitely gone, anybody who claims otherwise probably has a third generation Apple TV. I really liked the YouTube app on my third generation Apple TV up until a week or so ago. I used it more than Hulu and Netflix combined. However, lately, probably because of this new plan to collect a monthly fee, if I try to play a video on the Apple TV the advertisement is sometimes longer than the video I wish to play. I honestly would buy Apple Music before I would buy a monthly YouTube subscription as I can't buy both. I may end up hiding YouTube along with the seventy other channels I can't use because my cable provider does not allow me to watch most of their content. Hi, try hitting the forward button followed by the play button once while playing the ad. This at least for me, skips right over the ad and goes right to the real content, only a couple of quick button presses which is certainly better than sitting through the entire ad. Hi Sieghard, I have both a second and third gen of the Apple TV and can confirm that YouTube no longer is available on the second gen, only on the third gen. With most videos, not all, the ads are skippable, sometimes you might have to wait a second or two to skip it, but most of the time, I am able to skip ads. Arrow to the right once when the ad starts and then press play. If this doesn't work, then it is not a skippable ad. I do run across those from time to time, but like I said, most times they can be skipped. -Original Message- From: Merv Keck Sent: Tuesday, October 27, 2015 12:48 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: New Apple TV In The Apple Store I really liked the YouTube app on my third generation Apple TV up until a week or so ago. For those of you who want less expensive cable outlay, I suggest you get hold of the providers of Sling TV. They are offering a package for about $20 a month with additional channel packages for $5 per month. I enjoy other applications as well, such as Lifetime, A, YouTube, ABC, NBC, CBS, etc. There is so much available, on the 2nd generation alone there are 71 apps, not counting all the content you can access through the iTunes store, and the new generation is supposed to have so much more. I am looking forward to Voice Recognition and playing around with Siri. I would rather have a Roku as Roku offers tons and tons and tons of channels, but the Roku has no VoiceOver or any other speech which makes it toally useless for a blind person. Apple TV, with VoiceOver enabled, is a great set top box for a blind individual. I can’t wait to see what all the new version does offer. Re: New Apple TV In The Apple Store
before you guys all run out and get your cable disconnected, the Apple TV for the most part gets channels that your cable provider offers. You are able to get these channels because you get them on your cable. In the future there is a good chance that Apple will work out deals with some of these channels and you will subscribe to them through Apple. Right now, I pay $25.10 including tax each month for NetFlix, but that plan includes having DVDs shipped to my house, but it also allows me to stream unlimited content to my Apple TV and other supported devices. I also pay $11.99 each month for Hulu+ which also gives me unlimited streaming without commercials, something that was recently added, to my Apple TV and other supported devices. I have heard that Apple TV is trying to negotiate with networks for some sort of deal for customers, but I won’t know more about it until next week. Everything right now is speculation until someone has the new Apple TV and can give us all more information about what is and isn’t included. Re: New Apple TV In The Apple Store
Just to add, here in the Uk we have Now TV, Sky TV without a contract. It is by far the only accessible platform for the service. The iOS app is ok but not straightforward just like the case with Netflix. With Now TV you get both live and on-demand streaming of movies and entertainment as well as live streaming of all 7 Sky Sports channels. This is why I love my third generation Apple TV as there is lots to watch compared to free to air television like Freeview. On 26/10/2015 16:30, Sieghard Weitzel wrote: Hi Jeremy and others, The big thing with the new Apple TV is that it will have an app store which means theoretically anybody could make an app for the Apple TV, for example, CNN, CBC, other news sources, any of the sports channels/networks etc. Of course the possibilities are endless as they are on iPhone and I think we’ll only start to see what’s going to be possible in the months to come as more and more apps will be available. For me the big thing is that the Apple TV is so super easy and accessible, it’s by far the best Netflix experience if you use Netflix and also the fact that we can watch Youtube on the big TV sitting on our couch is very nice. Of course there is the fact that Apple is still negotiating with many content providers to offer a full line-up of programming which currently is only available via cable or satellite. Once again we won’t see where this will go for another year or so, but considering Apple’s strength in offering content and the fact they have virtually limitless money to me means it will probably go far. Lastly, you can of course consume any content like movies or music you bought on iTunes and you can buy and rent movies right from the Apple Tv. You can also access anything in your iTunes library on your computer, for example, if you have movies there which you obtained from somewhere else or maybe which you ripped from DVD’s you have, you can watch them via your Apple TV. The same applies to photos and music. Even now at the higher price point, $149 and $199 in the US, I think it’s a good deal and with the new Apple TV you also have access to SIRI, you can tell it to play certain movies or, if you are watching and just missed what was said, you can tell SIRI “What did they say” and it will rewind just a bit to let you hear it again. The new Apple TV remote also have volume buttons which can control your TV’s volume, so just one small remote will be necessary. Anybody who has more basic questions as to what the Apple TV is or what it can do, just go to Apple’s website or read some of the reviews which in the next few days will pop up all over the major sites like The Verge, CNET and so on. Actually Youtube is still available and working to my knowledge on the third generation, now entry level, model. For me that alone is almost worth it and combining it with having access to voice control via SIRI and an app store which has huge potential means I just ordered my new Apple TV from the Canadian online Apple Store using the Apple Store app. For once Apple is not price gouging like they are doing with the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus on contract. The 64 Gb Apple TV which is $199 US is $269 canadian and at 30% more that is right in line and actually maybe a few percent better than the current exchange rate. If you go for the 32 Gb option for $149, it’s only an extra $80 more than the third gen Apple TV and if you are a first time buyer I think it’s a no-brainer. I agree but it would probably be cheaper than cable. Well, my 2nd generation still has it, it gets used an awful lot in my house. My daughter enjoys searching for videos containing lyrics with backing tracks. As of a few months ago the Youtube app is gone from the old Apple TV and while you could still watch Youtube on your TV via the Apple TV by playing it on your iOS device and sending it to the Apple TV using Airplay, it is nice to just sit on the couch and check out Youtube content on the Apple TV. Both services offer different content. Sometimes you might find a show or a movie that both of them have, but it is rare. NetFlix has original shows that you can only watch on NetFlix. And NetFlix, like I said, I pay the higher price so I can have actual DVDs sent to my house. I get 3 DVDs and as soon as I return them, I get 3 more. I can do this as often as I want every month. Having both services gives us a good bit of movies and TV shows to choose from. The content does change so you never know what you might find on either service. RE: New Apple TV In The Apple Store
Hi, OK, so I checked into this Youtube thing a bit more and on second generation Apple TV they are definitely gone, anybody who claims otherwise probably has a third generation Apple TV. I also found out that the third generation Apple TV which was originally released in March of 2012 had a small update (not sure what that was) and a Revision A was released in January of 2013. It appears that Youtube is still available on the third generation Apple TV and I thought that is what I had, but apparently I have only a second generation Apple TV. I sort of remembered this now because when the third generation Apple TV came out I was debating whether I should buy one, but I believe one of the few improvements was that it can stream in 1280P whereas the second gen can only do 720P and to me that was not very important. Anybody who wants to check, here are the actual model numbers which would tell you exactly which one you have including the first generation Apple TV which came out in 2007 and was available with a 40 Gb or 160 Gb hard drive and which probably not too many people have any more. Below the model information I am pasting two links which talk about the Youtube thing: Apple TV (1st generation) Year introduced: Early 2007 Color: Silver Capacity: 40 or 160 GB Model number on bottom: A1218 Model Identifier: AppleTV1,1 Ports and interfaces: • HDMI and component video (480P or 720P) • Optical and RCA stereo audio • 10/100BASE-T Ethernet • Built-in IR receiver • USB 2.0 (for service and support) • Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n) Apple TV (2nd generation) Year introduced: Late 2010 Color: Black Model number on bottom: A1378 Model Identifier: AppleTV2,1 Ports and interfaces: • HDMI (720P) • Optical audio • 10/100BASE-T Ethernet • Built-in IR receiver • Micro-USB (for service and support) • Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n) Apple TV (3rd generation) Year introduced: Early 2012 Color: Black Model number on bottom: A1427 Model Identifier: AppleTV3,1 Ports and interfaces: • HDMI (720P or 1080P) • Optical audio • 10/100BASE-T Ethernet • Built-in IR receiver • Micro-USB (for service and support) • Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n) Apple TV (3rd generation, Revision A) Year introduced: Early 2013 Model number on bottom: A1469 Model Identifier:AppleTV3,2 Ports and interfaces: • HDMI (720P or 1080P) • Optical audio • 10/100BASE-T Ethernet • Built-in IR receiver • Micro-USB (for service and support) • Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n) Articles about Youtube going away on second generation Apple TV: http://www.macrumors.com/2015/04/20/youtube-older-apple-tv-discontinued/ https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7029264 Best regards, Sieghard ---Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of chris Sent: Monday, October 26, 2015 12:10 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: New Apple TV In The Apple Store Actually Youtube is still available and working to my knowledge on the third generation, now entry level, model. If you go for the 32 Gb option for $149, it’s only an extra $80 more than the third gen Apple TV and if you are a first time buyer I think it’s a no-brainer. Thanks for letting us know that it is available. I read that it would be available at midnight today but when I looked at 7:00 eastern it wasn't so I assumed that what I read was wrong. I purchased the same model as you did. This is my first unit. I've been holding off for a long time. I hope that Apple can negosiate other cable channels so that I can get rid of my cable in a few months. I'm tired of paying money for channels we don't watch. However, their are a few that are must haves. On 10/26/15, MamaPeach <mamapeac...@gmail.com> wrote: > It's an honest mistake. I looked at the content page. It didn't really have much information though. We primarily watch the discovery channels, history, science, and some of the business channels. So, something like a cable box then. I wonder if it will provide any of the sports channels. At the moment like big ten, big 12, ESPN and ESPN2 and golf tennis all those sports channels NFL and MBA and such. Also, then if connecting it to the TV, I then presume for the sighted folks, they will actually see the programs? I did Google it, but well, it really didn't appear to be all that much to invest into. I also would love to cut out the big cable company, but from what I read, you have to pay for Netflix, and I didn't see any of the big news channels listed anywhere's like fox news and such. _ From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Patti Johnson Sent: Monday, October 26, 2015 12:05 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: New Apple TV In The Apple Store Let us know what it does offer as far as content. I would look up Apple TV on the internet and see what the advantages of having one are. I cut cable a long time ago, because many of the channels that cable offers are things I just don’t watch. With Apple TV, I pay for a NetFlix subscription and a Hulu+ subscription and get a lot of content just with those too. Hello I too am interested in the apple tv and have been researching. I want to get rid of my cable as well because the price is just too much for what it offers. Where can I find out what is available on apple tv? Should I just google it? I enjoy other applications as well, such as Lifetime, A, YouTube, ABC, NBC, CBS, etc. There is so much available, on the 2nd generation alone there are 71 apps, not counting all the content you can access through the iTunes store, and the new generation is supposed to have so much more. boy they need to add a lot for the difference in price. You can get an Apple TV 3 for $69 and it offers lots of content. More than I have time to use personally and I have no problem with the included remote or with the remote app on the IPhone. It will be interesting to see what the added features are. RE: New Apple TV In The Apple Store
Hi John, Keep in mind that once Apple is offering a lot of the channels which now are available on cable that this will not be a free service. Apple is not in the habit of giving things away hence their enormous wealth. I heard talk about something like $40 a month and while this is still cheaper than cable (at least in Canada) nobody really knows yet what they will charge and whether what is being offered will be as comprehensive as cable. I think over time it will be and it is my hope that with Apple it is more possible to pick and choose those channels one is interested in. I find that here with the satellite company we have, if you want a particul;ar channel you have to take whatever package of channels that the channel you want is in. This may of course include a few other channels one might like, but it is almost a given that half the channels that come in the package are channels you never end up watching. Of course the companies are very good at putting the most popular channels into different packages so if you want them you end up with 3 or 4 packages with a lot of stuff you don't really want or need. Just as with cellular and internet services, at least here in Canada I think TV is a bit of a rip-off. Yes, we are the second largest country in the world geographically and have the smallest population density of all developed countries, but it's still more expensive than I think it has to be. But I understand it is also expensive in the US and you guys have 10 times the population of Canada in the continental United States which is an area about 20% smaller than Canada. In many European countries both TV and cellular and internet services are much cheaper. RE: New Apple TV In The Apple Store
You definitely would need an Apple TV for each television set in your house since the Apple TV has only a single HDMI output. You could connect a second TV by using a splitter or if you have a receiver where you can connect the Apple TV to the receiver and the receiver has 2 HDMI outputs, but then both TV’s would be limited to watching the same program. RE: New Apple TV In The Apple Store
Primarily it is the SIRI capable remote and the fact that the new Apple TV has access to its own app store. I also would assume that eventually there will be new content which may not be available on the third gen Apple TV. One example already is Youtube. Let's hope it will be so and of course then there still is the issue that whatever TV channels/service Apple is going to offer may not be available in Canada. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of John Diakogeorgiou Sent: Monday, October 26, 2015 10:55 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: New Apple TV In The Apple Store Sieghard Try living in in Montreal where I grew up. I don't know about accessible program guides, Netflix is certainly very accessible. As for recording, that is a No at this point. I think considering that a lot of what you have access to on the Apple TV is basically on demand programming, being able to record something which airs at a certain time is not as big of an issue. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Wayne Merritt Sent: Monday, October 26, 2015 11:13 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: New Apple TV In The Apple Store This topic is interesting. hi, I think I remember hearing this but, the apple tv 4 generation will support apple music yes? also the u graded apple tv 4 generation has 64 gigs of memory storage or do you mean it's a 64 bit system for what ever that's worth? - Original Message - From: MamaPeach To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Monday, October 26, 2015 1:04 PM Subject: Re: New Apple TV In The Apple Store I am using a 2nd generation Apple TV and YouTube is still working on mine. I also would assume that eventually there will be new content which may not be available on the third gen Apple TV. One example already is Youtube.
This topic is interesting. Here are more Apple TV questions: since VoiceOver comes standard on the Apple TV, is there a way of accessing a guide of some sort to find out what is on all those channels? Also, can the Apple TV record show for playback later? Is that process accessible? I mean also besides the menus, the person can listen to music and do pictures, but well, streaming pictures through my television set won't work. Just some curious questions. Never seen an apple TV in action, and for me, it just seems like just one more thing to hook up to your television.
