My mom uses the stylist for typing. She has a lot of trouble figuring out the
keyboard any other way. The stylist gives her more control. Her nails might
also get in the way. LOL. She's not the techiest person in the world and the
stylist offers her some more control of where her fingers are going and what on
earth they're doing. LOL

  Tara,

I doubt it is of much use for a blind person since you don't know exactly
where you put the tip of your stylus. Sighted people use them sometimes for
drawing, but I don't really know anybody personally how even uses one for
typing on an iDevice. I guess if somebody had really huge fingers that it could
be of some use.

Styklus or pen of any use for VoiceOver users?

Dear all. I recently bought a cover for my iPhone five. It came with a pen.
Do you think it is of some use for me? What do people use a stylus for?

RE: Stylus or pen of any use for VoiceOver users?

2013-06-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Ricardo,

The touch screen on an iPhone is a "capacitive touch screen" which does not
react to the moisture in your skin but to electrical conductivity. Skin and
the human body as a whole is conductive. A stylus is made from material
which transfer the conductivity of your finger/body through the material of
the stylus to the touch screen. This is the same principal as is found in
touch screen friendly gloves which also exist and it is also the same as
when I put my iPhone into a zip lock bag so I can use my recipe app in the
kitchen and use it with fingers that are greasy, wet, full of flour etc.
After all, you can still use your phone when it's in a Lifeproof case which
covers the screen with a relatively thick piece of plastic.

2013-06-17 Thread David Chittenden
The stylus will work just like using one finger. So, you can touch the screen
with the stylus and get the same effect as you get using a finger.

Many people are not comfortable signing or drawing with the finger, so they
prefer to use the stylus.

Re: Stylus or pen of any use for VoiceOver users?

2013-06-17 Thread Carol Pearson
I have often thought of getting hold of a stylist to play on my iPhone. I
sometimes notice that the fingers that I use the most become a little sticky
and therefore don't want to glide over the surface. I then swap fingers.
However, if I had a stylus, this would be Avoided. I would be interested to
hear if anyone has used one and how they got on.

I guess the question is, what is the advantage of using the stylus over a
finger?

RE: Stylus or pen of any use for VoiceOver users?

2013-06-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Chuck,

Steve Jobbs may have thought all people are born with ten fingers, but then
again this is of course not so and even for those of us who are born with 10
fingers that doesn't mean something doesn't happen which reduces that
number. I guess if he said that about the fingers he/Apple can argue in the
same way that we are all born with 2 eyes yet Apple made accessibility a
priority.

I said in my prior email some people use a stylus for drawing on a touch
screen, but somebody who, for example, lost one or both hands could use a
stylus for using an iPhone which otherwise may not be possible.

RE: Stylus or pen of any use for VoiceOver users?

2013-06-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Tara,

I doubt it is of much use for a blind person since you don't know exactly
where you put the tip of your stylus. Sighted people use them sometimes for
drawing, but I don't really know anybody personally how even uses one for
typing on an iDevice. I guess if somebody had really huge fingers that it
could be of some use.
