Might just be me, but my phones live long edge down in the bottom of my
pockets, I always have a nylon jacket of some sort on when out. Ditto in
the bottom of a bag pocket if I don't take a coat. I just don't cram them
in pants pockets.

I MollyCuddle those a bit, too.
Got into it when my first computer cost over 2 months wages in the latter
80s.

An iPhone now is about a weeks wages of a moderately skilled job, bus driver
for example, bit of overtime maybe; but not significantly more.
That is a huge relative value drop.

RE: Thoughts on IPhone 6

2014-10-15 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Sure, tried it with my nephew's toy John Deer and my 5S handle it just fine.
Joking aside, just because a delicate piece of technology is expensive does
not mean it stands up to any abuse. David's example is a good one. I can buy
a $400 laptop or a $1,200 laptop and both are equally breakable. I can also
go out and buy a special purpose ruggedized laptop for $4,000 and that will
stand up to quite a lot of abuse and drops, but I doubt even that would
stand up to a tractor (a full-size one) being driven over it. Probably not
the best conclusion, Joe *smile*.

An inside wallet pocket is ideal, as they're about the same size. Put your

RE: Thoughts on IPhone 6

2014-10-15 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Joe,

The iPhone is more robust than you think, but it totally depends on how it
lands if you drop it. It's a bit like people who step on a small curb or
slip on a bit of ice and end up with a compound fracture of their ankle.
Others fall out of a third floor window OR end up in a car accident where
the car is completely totaled and walk away with a few scratches.

I once pushed my iPhone 4S off a 3 and a half foot high counter in my store
and I pushed it with considerable force. It flew through the air, landed on
a tile floor where the tiles were installed on concrete and it skittered
across the floor for 6 feet and it didn't have a scratch on it. Another
story I heard from Rob of the Today in iOS podcast was that he dropped his
iPhone in an airplane, maybe 2 feet and it landed touch screen down on the
bolt which holds the seat in front of you in place and the screen shaddered.
All one can do is be careful, put it in a good case if you are worried (or
clumsy) and hope for the best.

Sieghard

The only true way to find out is to go to an Apple store and try it
with a model phone. I was at the Apple store on North Michigan Avenue
here in Chicago a few weeks ago and was surprised at the design.
Apple took the design of the 5 series and made it taller and only
slightly wider. The iPhone 6plus is a true rectangle to accommodate a
full 16 x 9 ratio display of digital television or two square boxes of
information. This is in contrast to Samsung’s big ugly square design
in its Note series.

I know women's and men's clothing is a bit different, but I have no
trouble getting the 6 in my jeans pocket. I have the 6 in an Otterbox

best way to know for sure is go to a nearby store and try it for
yourself. They shouldn't have much of an issue with this since you
aren't the only one with this sort of question.

RE: Thoughts on IPhone 6

2014-10-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Thinner as far as specs go, but a 0.7mm difference from the 5S (7.6mm) to
the iPhone 6 at 6.9mm will hardly be of practical value and the only way to
notice it would be to put both phones next to each other on a perfectly flat
surface and compare. In terms of inches that 0.7mm is less than 3 one
hundreds of an inch.

Re: Thoughts on IPhone 6

2014-10-14 Thread David Chittenden
Yes, let me correct myself. I did not have the measurements with me when I
looked at the phones. The 6 ann 6+ feel thinner than my current 5S. I suspect
this is because of the rounded edges compared with the vertical edges of the
5S. I placed both iPhones in my pocket, one at a time, and both fit without
difficulties. Considering that I always only purchase trousers with deep
pockets, this does not surprise me.

When at the Vodafone shop, I compared the 6+ with the Samsung equivalent, the
6+ felt thinner. When measuring them side-by-side, they were actually almost
the same size. This surprised both myself and my girlfriend. She had the same
tactile, and visual, perception. The 6+ is noticeably lighter.

As Kate pointed out, from a 4S to a 6 will be a huge difference and
improvement. If you have useable vision you might want to carefully consider
a 6 Plus because the larger screen may be really benefitial for you.
