I did it by pushing both buttons at the same time and holding him down for a

We ended up doing a hard reset. Volume was set at 60 and was turned up to 100 
to be sure we heard it. It was doing everything else but talking. After the 
hard reset, voiceover came back. Go figure. Thanks for the offer though I 
didn’t know about the swiping up to raise the volume. :-)
