Tips on reading web sites [was "RE: Warning, political article link included concerning disabled person's receiving Social Security"]

2020-11-17 Thread Christopher Chaltain
As an FYI, I had no problems reading the web site using the link below with the
immersive reading feature in Microsoft Edge on my PC. On the PC, you toggle
immersive reading mode with the F9 key. IMHO, just because a lot of us use
Windows, I still don't consider this on topic for the list, but to try to bring
it around to this list, you can run Edge on IOS, although I'm not sure how to
start immersive reading mode on the iPhone. Other browsers, like Safari,
Firefox and Chrome, also have such modes. Sometimes they're called reader mode.
They try to strip out everything but the relevant text and information on a web
page. Note that not all web sites support this feature. Good luck, and I hope
this tip helps others on their iPhones!

Hi All,

You all know the drill by now, :) please can we keep the political discussion
off the list?

My apologies for the delay in writing but seriously :) you shouldn’t need me or
Mark to say anything here.

It goes without saying that this sort of thing is not cool here. It also goes
without saying that you have a delete key that you can use as much as you want.
:)

So please can we close this thread now. there is so much happening in Apple
land at this point that I think we all should have more than enough to keep us
busy here on this list aside from any of the craziness afoot.

Thanks so much to you all. Please know that everyone of us here is an important
and necessary part of this list. I hope you all and your families and friends
are safe and well.

Please have a great day!

Cheers!

Cara

Hi,
The only thing I can say is who knows for sure if this is true. Now days there
is so much false information posted out there on the net no one knows if it
true or not. Let's see if it comes up other places. I am not saying it true or
False but one has to make sure before one can believe it.

2020-11-17 Thread Richard Turner
I apologize for having started this thread, and this will be my last comment
and then I will shut up and delete all future emails on this topic.
Look it up in the Federal Registry, check with Forbes magazine, CNBC or any
number of other sources and you will find this is a legitimate, factual, story.
I do not receive Social Security disability benefits, but I think anyone who
depends on that source of income needs to be aware and even contact their
federal representatives for clarification and to voice their opinion in favor
or against the proposed rule changes.

OK, here’s the text of the article. Note, I’m just presenting the text of
the article. Although I’m no fan of President Trump, I do find this article
to be a bit unnecessarily inflammatory, and I question it’s being posted to
this list, although Richard did warn everyone in the subject line that it’s
a political article.

Trump makes one last effort to cut Social Security, maximize hurt to the
disabled

WASHINGTON, DC - MAY 26: U.S. President Donald Trump makes remarks during an
event on protecting seniors with diabetes, in the Rose Garden at the White

House on May 26, 2020 in Washington, DC. The United States is closing in on
100,000 deaths in less than four months caused by the coronavirus.

In the middle of the Trump pandemic, in which untold millions of people who
survive the disease could end up disabled for life, the Trump administration

Announced Friday that it's finalizing rules meant to do nothing but make it
harder for disabled people to receive Social Security, and to endanger the
Social Security

benefits of disabled people who are already approved. In the first
regulation, it's changing the appeals process by replacing impartial,
independent administrative

law judges (ALJs) with internal agency lawyers, making it much more
difficult for

people to navigate the process.

They have also sent their proposal that will dramatically increase
"continuing disability reviews" (the process during which those receiving
disability must prove they're still disabled)

to the Office of Management and Budget for approval as a final rule. The
administration admitted it is about dropping people out of the program ,
"saving"

$2.6 billion. It would mean earlier and more frequent reviews for people on
disability, likely older people who are physically unable to continue their

work. This is simply, in the words of Sen. Ron Wyden, "harassment of people
with disabilities" that puts Americans at "greater risk of falling through
the cracks."

House Democrats on the Ways and Means Committee blasted

the final rule on cutting out judges, which is set to take effect on Dec.
16. "For nearly two years, we’ve sounded the alarm that this change would
erode

due process for Social Security and Supplemental Security Income applicants
and beneficiaries and threaten their access to their earned benefits. The
rule

puts unqualified agency staff in control of deciding appeals hearings and
contradicts the congressional intent of the law governing such proceedings."

The rule would remove administrative law from taking up standard cases,
conducting hearings, and issuing decisions on applications for disability
benefits—all

responsibilities currently reserved for them. The ALJ union

responded early this year, calling the proposal a violation of current law
and Supreme Court precedent, saying it would "effectively subject the entire
administrative

adjudicative process under performance appraisal control by the agency."

These two rules are just Trump's kick in the teeth to vulnerable people. The
new Biden administration and/or Congress will have to spend time and energy

unwinding these rules, which have no other purpose than making life more
difficult for people who are already hurting. As with every goddamned thing
with

everyone in Trump's orbit, the cruelty is the point.

Hello,

It might be worth noting that the source isn't rated as a credible
news source by independent fact checkers, openly campaigns for the
democratic party and has raised money for them in the past. It might
be worth taking it with a large pinch of salt.

OK, here’s the text of the article. Note, I’m just presenting the text of the
article. Although I’m no fan of President Trump, I do find this article to be a
bit unnecessarily inflammatory, and I question it’s being posted to this list,
although Richard did warn everyone in the subject line that it’s a political
article.

In the first
regulation, it's changing the appeals process by replacing impartial,
independent administrative

law judges (ALJs) with internal agency lawyers, making it much more difficult
for

  people to navigate the process.

Ron Wyden, "harassment of people
with disabilities" that puts Americans at "greater risk of falling through the
cracks."

House Democrats on the Ways and Means Committee blasted

the final rule on cutting out judges, which is set to take effect on Dec. 16.
"For nearly two years, we’ve sounded the alarm that this change would erode

due process for Social Security and Supplemental Security Income applicants
and beneficiaries and threaten their access to their earned benefits. The rule

puts unqualified agency staff in control of deciding appeals hearings and
contradicts the congressional intent of the law governing such proceedings."

As with every goddamned thing with

everyone in Trump's orbit, the cruelty is the point.

beneficiaries and threaten their access to their earned benefits. The rule

puts unqualified agency staff in control of deciding appeals hearings and
contradicts the congressional intent of the law governing such proceedings."

The rule would remove administrative law from taking up standard cases,
conducting hearings, and issuing decisions on applications for disability
benefits—all

responsibilities currently reserved for them. The ALJ union

responded early this year, calling the proposal a violation of current law and
Supreme Court precedent, saying it would "effectively subject the entire
administrative

adjudicative process under performance appraisal control by the agency."

These two rules are just Trump's kick in the teeth to vulnerable people. The
new Biden administration and/or Congress will have to spend time and energy

unwinding these rules, which have no other purpose than making life more
difficult for people who are already hurting. As with every goddamned thing with

everyone in Trump's orbit, the cruelty is the point.
