Well, control+up and down arrows will move you to the top and bottom of the screen, but not inside a document. Command+up and down arrows will move you to the top and bottom of the document, though I would never trust it in Word or Pages. They are notorious for misreporting the cursor position with VoiceOver. Perhaps I'm mistaken, but that is what I recall. This is why for any serious word processing, I use a computer running Word and Jaws. You can use these commands in any editing app, notes, pages, email, even text messaging. And to go to the top and bottom of text, use control down arrow to go to bottom, and control up arrow to go to the beginning. User of IOS, TVOS, MacOS, and watchOS? Perhaps the following will help. From the ios 11 users guide. Use these commands (with Quick Nav turned off) to work with text. VoiceOver reads the text as you move the insertion point. Go forward or back one character: Right Arrow or Left Arrow Go forward or back one word: Option–Right Arrow or Option–Left Arrow Go up or down one line: Up Arrow or Down Arrow Go to the beginning or end of the line: Command–Left Arrow or Command–Down Arrow Go to the beginning or end of the paragraph: Option–Up Arrow or Option–Down Arrow Go to the previous or next paragraph: Option–Up Arrow or Option–Down Arrow Go to the top or bottom of the text field: Command–Up Arrow or Command–Down Arrow Select text as you move: Shift + any of the insertion point movement commands above Select all text: Command–A Copy, cut, or paste the selected text: Command–C, Command–X, or Command–V Undo or redo last change: Command–Z or Shift–Command–Z -Original Message- From: Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Thursday, May 24, 2018 9:48 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: shortcuts for keyboard and word/pages on ios was Re: switching to ios only There are commands for moving to the beginning or the end of a document, but you can't select text the way you do in Windows. Hi, Selecting text with the keyboard with these commands only work if you are editing. So, if in an Email that you are reading, you still have to use the Text Selection, the same on a web page. Well, that is good to know. However, does this only work in Pages or can you also use it to select, copy or move text when composing an email, writing a note etc.? Reading books, podcasts, the news, watching tv looking stuff up on the internet, whatsapp. Using my banking app and doing some basic text editing and mail. I agree that some websites can be problematic on ios though so thats something htat I will have to look into. Wikipedia, which i use most frequently works fine though. RE: shortcuts for keyboard and word/pages on ios was Re: switching to ios only
There are commands for moving to the beginning or the end of a document, but you can't select text the way you do in Windows. I am not aS Pprofficient with bluetooth keyboard commands since all I use them for is typing long text, but as far as I know you still have to change the rotor to words if, for example, you want to go back a few words etc. I think you also need to use the rotor and the text selection set to characters, words or lines to select text, you can't just arrow up a few lines, press home to go to the beginning of a line and then hold down control+shift and arrow right to select a bunch of words, then use Control+c or Control+X to copy or move them etc. These are exactly the things people talk about when the topic of efficient word processing comes up. Sighted people have it a bit easier as they can pinch and stuff like that and see as they are doing it what is being selected and so on. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Anouk Radix Sent: Thursday, May 24, 2018 9:39 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: shortcuts for keyboard and word/pages on ios was Re: switching to ios only Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows if its possible with the bt keyboard and pages or word for ios to use shift+up or down arrow to select text (i know you can copy and paste with command+v and command+c). RE: switching to ios only
Mostly on needs and only somewhat on preference. There is no way even if I wanted to that I could ever use just iOS for what I do. If you don't need a PC for work or a business and all you do is deal with email, browse the web a bit (here it already gets iffy) and want to do some online banking, social media, home automation then no problem. But as I said, if you spend a lot of time online then a PC with Jaws (or NVDA for those who are profficient with it) beats Voiceover hands down and I wold probably include Voiceover on the Mac in this. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of SoonerAnnie Sent: Wednesday, May 23, 2018 9:22 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: switching to ios only I, too, use only my iPhone! Re: switching to ios only
My printer has airprint so htat is not a problem here luckily. I have some files that i would still want to access but could get a bigger icloud account and put that stuff there. I hear good htings about apps like filebrowser for moving files around. I did read up on the (voiceover)shortcuts that you can use with a wireless keyboard and an iphone and you can really do a lot htat way. RE: switching to ios only
When the time comes that my computer has died, I'd use the iPhone only, if there was a word processing program in it. There is notes, but it would be hard for me to keep three programs that have figures in them. I am getting used to the keyboard and do not want a physical one. I never thought I'd say that. No way I could or would ever give up my windows computer, I also have a mac book but I don't enjoy using it as much because of all the interacting and not interacting it drives me nuts. Also I game a bit as well so don't want to have to just rely on IOS. On 5/23/18, SoonerAnnie wrote: > I, too, use only my iPhone! It is so much easier for me, and I can take it > anywhere! Re: switching to ios only
If you need to do much serious word processing, then you do not want to limit yourself to iOS only. I do like voice dream writer on my iPhone, but I will always go to my computer and use word if I need to do a lot of writing or editing. I also use windows since Mac computers confuse me to no end. All that interacting and stop interacting stuff... Whether just iOS would do the trick for you is something you have to decide, I for one would not want to be without a laptop or desktop, but then again I'm also a Windows user and you can find some very inexpensive but decent Windows computers compared to what Macs cost. Again, this is strictly my experience and how I like to work, but using Jaws and Chrome or Firefox browsing for me is so much more efficient, I have to do a lot of checking of my bank and credit card websites for my business and that includes copying and pasting stuff from websites into Excel, I use PDF files a lot some of which are not accessible hence I use Jaws OCR to recognize and read them and again I do a lot of copying and pasting of information from PDF reports generated by my point of sale software into Excel and there just is no way this can be done efficiently and quickly with iOS. Then there is working with spreadsheets in general, if that is not something you have to do or almost never have to do then maybe that would be OK, I live in Excel because of my business. iOS and thje iPhone are fantastic, but I prefer to use whatever tool is most suited and at this point I don't consider iOS a tool which can do it all just as in my woodworking the table saw is an incredibly versitiele tool and one no serious woodworker can do without, but there are many things where you do need additional tools apart from a good table saw. RE: switching to ios only
Getting a printer which supports Airprint is a very minor investment if that is all holding you back.
