Problem Resolved: REST FINGER TO OPEN INCONSISTENCY ON IPHONE 8 / 8 PLUS, ONLY

2018-09-23 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

I meant to post this just after updating my beloved 8 Plus to iOS 12 but
forgot to do so.

I am happy to report that the annoying rest-finger to-open bug that existed
on the 8 Series since its initial release with iOS 11, was finally fixed
with the release of iOS 12. Not a major thing but one that irked me,
nevertheless. I am surprised that, even though Apple acknowledged the
problem, almost immediately, it took them an entire OS release cycle to
resolve the problem.

You can read my initial report on this, below.

Oh well, better late than never, as the saying goes.

Mark

Hello Everyone,

I submitted the following bug to apple and thought I'd post it here for your
information.

Although this bug has already been confirmed and discussed by others, on the
web, in Apple discussion forums, blogs, etc, I wanted to contribute to this
conversation since, at issue, is an accessibility feature.

Please feel free to use any or all of my bug report in your own submission
to Apple.

[BEGIN BUG REPORT]
Subject:
REST FINGER TO OPEN INCONSISTENCY ON IPHONE 8 / 8 PLUS, ONLY

NOTE 1:
This bug only effects the Rest Finger to Open feature in terms of unlocking
the screen. All other Touch ID functions, including Apple Pay, work
perfectly.

NOTE 2:
I can only reproduce this problem on iPhone 8 / 8 Plus running the latest
commercial release of iOS 11.x as of Sunday, November 12, 2017.

NOTE 3:
The bug only occurs after the device has been powered on for longer than 20
seconds.

BUG DETAILS:
The Rest Finger to Open feature does not work consistently on iPhone 8 / 8
Plus.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1.
>From the Settings menu, select General.

2.
Select Accessibility.

3.
Select Home Button.

4.
Set, Rest Finger to Open, to ON.

5.
Lock the display with the Power button.

6.
Press the Power button to wake up the display.

7.
Now, place your finger (with a registered finger print) on the Home button.
Do not actually press the button but, merely, rest your finger on the
button.

Repeat steps 5, 6, and 7, above, in order to experience the bug. As you can
see, sometimes the Rest Finger to Open feature will work and sometimes, more
often than not, it fails.

WORKAROUND:
The simplest workaround is to first lift, then rest your finger on the Home
button, a second time.
[END BUG REPORT]
