Re: Orbit Reader 20 update, changes for iOs?

2019-06-05 Thread Richard Turner

Not from the iOS device.
You have to get the file, as a brf file on to the SD card that you put in the
Orbit Reader.
If you load a txt file on the SD card, it will read in computer braille.
So you need a program like Braille Blaster, which is free, to save the file as
BRF in whatever grade of braille you prefer.

I didn’t say stand alone mode had anything to do with ios, in fact I said in
ios you can change it however ios does.

and that is *exactly what I said*!

It has been established that you were someone had been talking about changing

But when using it with an iOS device, you can toggle between grades just fine,
like every other braille display.

Re: Orbit Reader 20 update, changes for iOs?

2019-06-04 Thread Beverly Wieland
I have been using the Orbit for a year now, mostly for reading rather than
for editing.

I don't know about the panning buttons on the Braille Me. But I like the
fact that controls on either side of the Orbit will pan in both
directions.
I have always been a strictly right-handed Braille reader, as everything I
read with my left hand feels backwards. So I am happy to be able to move
in both directions with the left panning control.

My other favorite feature is 8-dot Braille, which I would miss on the
Braille Me.
I got used to reading computer Braille when I studied computer science in
the 1980's.

Also the quality of the dots is excellent.

Just another perspective, for what it's worth.

Beverly

Since the Orbit does not do translation; you can read only what grade of

So, if it is a grade 1 file, you read grade 1, if a grade 2 file you read grade
2.
And with the editor, yes it will take whatever you enter.
Just don't try to back translate that BRF file to print or you might get some

As far as I can tell, the Orbit is here to stay.
I personally love it.
If they stop making them in a year, I will still be happy since it costs so
much less than other displays and if it dies; I'll start saving up for whatever
comes next.
But, I cannot say if you should or should not buy it.

Re: Orbit Reader 20 update, changes for iOs?

2019-06-04 Thread Traci Duncan
What are peoples opinions? Should this put me off buying the orbit? Is it
already getting a little too old? My current display is the focus 14 blue. The
original one as far as I know. From 6-7 years ago.

I appreciate your input,
Traci

Re: Orbit Reader 20 update, changes for iOs?

2019-06-03 Thread Richard Turner
The statement from APH only said they were going to stop selling it because
they want to be able to provide an affordable braille option and that the
supply stream was not dependable.
Well, according to Orbit research when APH released their statement, Orbit had
2000 units in stock.
So you can speculate all you want; but the reality is that APH chose to stop
selling it.
If you want to know more about the whys, you may want to contact APH directly.
HTH,
Richard

🤔 anyone know why it’s not available anymore through APH? I didn’t realize that
the product is already a couple years old.

You simply press spacebar to start the scrolling.

You can slow it down or speed it up.

I don't recall the keys but it will be in the release notes.

I think that was the main thing, but there is probably more to it.

And, for the person asking about the OR20 list; no it is gone; but Buddy

Re: Orbit Reader 20 update, changes for iOs?

2019-06-03 Thread Richard Turner

I've been using that update for a couple weeks I think.
The autoscroll works very nicely on files that are on your SD card.
You simply press spacebar to start the scrolling.
You can slow it down or speed it up.
I don't recall the keys but it will be in the release notes.
I think that was the main thing, but there is probably more to it.
And, for the person asking about the OR20 list; no it is gone; but Buddy
Brannon started a new list.

I caught a tweet today that said he updated his Orbit Reader and it now has
auto scrolling. Does anyone know anymore about this?

Thank you,
