Hi,

Try camfind. You don’t need to search for the barcode on items, just snap a
picture and it will tell you what it is.

I tried and tried to find the bar code on items with digitEyes but it’s next to
impossible. When I tried to find a bar code with a sighted user, DigitEyes
couldn’t see it either. So I will try Read’Laser.

One more thing. How do you know where to look for the code?

Re: Recommendations for barcode reader app

2014-07-08 Thread Alex Hall
I find the best results to be with Red Laser. For smaller items that are round,
like cans or yogurt containers, I simply rotate the item in front of the
camera, perhaps six inches away. After one or two circuits, I move the item up
or down to scan a new area and rotate again. I usually find codes on these
items within a minute, often far less. Boxes are harder, but eventually you'll
get to know where the codes are on things you use a lot. For instance, I now
know on which side the code is on the pasta boxes we use. Other than that, it's
a matter of scanning at the right height and waiting to find the code. Also, in
Red Laser, don't forget to enable the light (top right corner) for much, much
better results.

Hi Andrew,

Eileen's suggestion to first use Camfind is a very good one. With Camfind
you just take a picture of the package without having to worry about finding
the barcode and more often than not it will come back with the correct
information as to what you have.

Listers,

Is there a reliable barcode reader app which a blind person could use to
identify items purchased in supermarkets? I wonder how a blind person would
know where the barcode is situated.

Any experiences?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Recommendations for barcode reader app

2014-07-01 Thread Eileen Misrahi
CamFind is another app that one can use for identifying and recognizing
objects. It's from the same developers as TapTapSee and it's free. I forgot
about LookTel Recognizer being used as a barcode reader/scanner. I do have
Digit-Eyes and probably use this app more frequently when scanning and
organizing paperwork. I like the ability to create my own lables.

To answer your other question, on the Digit-Eyes website (www.digit-eyes.com),
there is a specific link to give one hints on finding the barcodes more
efficiently. Once in a while, I'll get stumped and will need to use another app
instead of Digit-Eyes or even take out my old ID Mate Omni, but that's in a
rare occasion. Using transparent Scotch tape (when out and about) and having a
a sighted person place it over the barcode will help one find it later on. I
always look for a seam on a package or can and start just left of the seam or
the bottom of a package like rice, but I'm systematic in my search. For a box,
I'll locate the top where one would go to open it and then turn the box upside
down and usually start on the bottom left. This usually works pretty well
unless the barcode has been placed on the side. Sometimes there is no logical
reason for where a manufacture has placed a barcode. In these cases, I will use
CamFind to take a picture. HTH

Best,
Eileen

Re: Recommendations for barcode reader app

2014-07-01 Thread Alex Hall
Red Laser works very well, and is free. Digit-Eyes works less well, but can
recognize more codes and lets you print out your own labels (from their
website) for scanning later to identify non-coded items. They also offer
clothing labels for identifying clothes or other items you may need to wash. If
all you're after is QR and bar code scanning, though, Red Laser should work
just fine. Just be sure to enable the light from within the app before you
start scanning.
