Hi.

Yes those clicks are really anoying. We should have an option that let us
decide, if we would have these sounds if we are using braille with speech muted.

It is on ios 5 forever, and I definitely do not get the clicks there. It
would make sense if the clicks could be muted, but not the phone. I guess it
is time to write to Apple Accessibility and see what happens.

Are those clicks the keyboard clicks that you can turn off in settings?

Re: VoiceOver Sounds with a Braille Display

2013-01-19 Thread Mary Otten
No, the clicks and other sounds are the clicks you get when say, moving on the
screen amongst icons or when double tapping on an item to open it or a folder
to open it etc. Not keyboard clicks that you get when typing, unless you turn
them off.

Re: VoiceOver Sounds with a Braille Display

2013-01-19 Thread Scott Davert
Hi Richard.
No, these are VoiceOver specific sounds which can only be muted in iOS
6 by muting all the sounds on your phone. I actually emailed Apple
durring the beta testing fases of iOS 6 to give them the feedback that
this was an annoyance, and that it would be nice to have the option of
turning these sounds on and off, but I was given the typical response.
I get it though, braille users are even more in the minority than
speech users.

The only thing I've been able to do is turn my IPod all the way down. (It
doesn't have a mute switch.) I'm also going to try experimenting with VO volume
by itself and see if I can just turn that down without muting everything.

Hi Mary,

I am turning off speech in the same manner, space+m. I am testing here
right now. I mute, space+m, and as I move from icon to icon on the
screen I hear the characteristic click made by VoiceOver when speech is
on as well as the sound made when I change to the next line. I wonder
what is different?

Re: VoiceOver Sounds with a Braille Display

2013-01-18 Thread Traci
I usually mute voiceover by 3-finger double tap.

I recommend we email:
accessibil...@apple.com

if we'd like the feature of muting all voiceover sounds. Personally, I'd like
a setting under braille to go into some sort of private mode. Silent
voiceover, silent voiceover sounds, and turn on screen curtain. All with one
selection. Then maybe this could be added to the rotor for quick toggle on and
off.

A lot of the time, I don't want to mute my phone and silence alerts and
ringers. :)

Well, maybe I'm nuts, but when I had speech muted messing around on my iPad and
the 4S, I sure don't remember hearing those clicks. My phone's charging right
now, but I just tried again on the iPad, and no clicks or folder and app
opening sounds etc are heard with speech muted. I did have to repair my iPad
though. I can't remember if you are suppose to turn off the display prior to
locking the screen or the other way around.
