Re: barns and noble nook app

2013-12-03 Thread Esther
Hi Mary, Joanne, Andrew, David, and Others,

As far as I know, the Nook App is only available in countries where the Nook
device can be purchased in stores. That means the U.S., where the Nook is sold
in Barnes and Noble's brick and mortar stoes, and the U.K., where Barnes and
Noble arranged for the John Lewis stores to sell the Nook just a month or two
before the Nook app was made accessible. I posted this information a year ago
to the Mac-access list, which is hosted in the U.K., along with a quote from
the Wall Street Journal that mentioned how Barnes and Noble was extending its
presence in the U.K. through their arrangement to have the John Lewis stores
sell the Nook. Their are no stores in Canada so the Nook app isn't available
in that store.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Yes, Mike, nook was accessible on iOS before it was accessible on android. So
there is your answer. It works on both platforms.

I have never used Safari on my iPhone to buy a nook book, but I don't see why
it wouldn't be possible. You just can't buy books from within the app on iOS.

Yes you can use Safari on the iOS to buy books. It's not a big deal. While it
is true that Apple won't let you use an app such as nook or Kindle to purchase
books, try doing it on the Kindle fire, for instance, and you'll see that you
waste far more time there, because of the lousy web accessibility compared
with iOS.

Re: barns and noble nook app

2013-11-29 Thread Alan Paganelli
All of the Kindles have the screen reader built in. I bought one for my
daughter several years ago so it's one of the older ones. One day she came
over and brought her Kindle and mentioned it. I said can you show me that?
She has a case for it as well which holds all the documentation. She looked
up how to turn the accessibility on and sure as can be, the thing will read
to you. It didn't have more then the very basics like play/stop and some
basic skip forward or back but never the less, it's there. I don't believe
though that it would read the list of titles but then again, this was like 2
years ago. She says her girlfriend has a new kindle and her friend says it
too can read to the blind.

I think for myself, I'll stick with the BARD app.

I don't know. Give it a try and let us know! Hope you enjoy the app,
no matter how you get your books. Nook was accessible long before the
Kindle, and I am fond of B&N simply because they made an effort that
Amazon came to only after much procrastination and a good bit of
obstinance!

Got the nook app and it's working great. The pause between pages takes a
little getting used to, but it's no big deal. This is an example of very
good development, the app is equally accessible on the 2 top mobile
platforms. One difference is that on IOS, the app uses voiceover to read the
text, while on android, the app is self voicing and sends the text to the
TTS engine directly, although you can still use talkback to read parts of
the text. This leaves Amazon without excuse for making the app accessible on
android, and until they do, I will get my books from barnes and noble.

You probably could, but you cannot purchase books within the app the way you
can on the android app. This is because Apple requires any purchases to go
through them so they get their portion. If an app developer does not want to do
this, they are not permitted to direct users to other places within the app.
One of the many restrictions IOS has that Android does not.

Awesome, then that's the way I will go, since this will allow me to
read the books on both platforms. Hopefully Amazon will fix the
accessibility issues with their android app, it actually works on the
kindle fire HDX but for some reason they have not transferred this to
the stand alone android app yet.

Hey everyone, does anyone know if this app is useable on IOS? There are
some e books I want to get, and, though I use IOS somewhat, Android is
my primary platform. I can get the books through the amazon kindle or
the nook. Unfortunately, the Kindle app is not accessible on android,
though it is on IOS. On the other hand, the Nook app is accessible on
Android. If only there could be one format of books that worked with
all apps, but of course that's not the case. Anyway, I'm wondering if I
purchased these books through Barns and Noble, will I be able to read
them on IOS?

The real issue is that the developers are not using the same amount of
resources for android as they are with IOS, they really should be giving equal
resrouces to both platforms.

Re: barns and noble nook app

2013-11-28 Thread Mike Arrigo
Got the nook app and it's working great. The pause between pages takes a little
getting used to, but it's no big deal. This is an example of very good
development, the app is equally accessible on the 2 top mobile platforms. One
difference is that on IOS, the app uses voiceover to read the text, while on
android, the app is self voicing and sends the text to the TTS engine directly,
although you can still use talkback to read parts of the text. This leaves
Amazon without excuse for making the app accessible on android, and until they
do, I will get my books from barnes and noble.

I hope I'm talking about the same Nook app[ for iPhone and iPad but I
use it all the time, it's extremely accessible and I live in the UK. I
use the www.nook.co.uk website to buy books and the app downloads them
straight into my device. Once I've finished with the book, there's an
option to archive it which is great is it doesn't take up room on my
device, and I can always download it and read it again. A great app.

Subject: barns and noble nook app

Hey everyone, does anyone know if this app is useable on IOS? There are
some e books I want to get, and, though I use IOS somewhat, Android is
my primary platform. I can get the books through the amazon kindle or
the nook. Unfortunately, the Kindle app is not accessible on android,
though it is on IOS. On the other hand, the Nook app is accessible on
Android. If only there could be one format of books that worked with
all apps, but of course that's not the case. Anyway, I'm wondering if I
purchased these books through Barns and Noble, will I be able to read
them on IOS?

RE: barns and noble nook app

2013-11-27 Thread Jesus Garcia
Interesting you are using a kindle fire without looking at the screen? I was
not aware that was possible? Perhaps if you do not mind we can take this off
the list I would be interested in discussing this topic. As satisfied with
my apple products as I am including the phone, a iPad and mac I at some
point wish to take a look at android.

Awesome, then that's the way I will go, since this will allow me to
read the books on both platforms. Hopefully Amazon will fix the
accessibility issues with their android app, it actually works on the
kindle fire HDX but for some reason they have not transferred this to
the stand alone android app yet.
