Reading Books with Braille Display on iPhone
Hi, What is the best app for reading books on an iPhone with a braille display? I know of the ones like Kindle and iBooks that seem to work with voiceover; however, I want an app that I can smoothly navigate using my braille display. Re: Reading Books with Braille Display on iPhone
If you're in the US rather a US citizen, Bard is the best app for continuous reading in Braille. Any other option is a bit dicey. For example, even if you convert a Braille book to pdf format, you pretty much have to read it in IBooks. I've gotten used to turning pages in iBooks and Kindle, but I do find the Bard experience to be very nice indeed, once you learn the specific Braille shortcuts in that app. HtH, Teresa On Sep 30, 2013, at 3:19 AM, Richard wrote: > Hi, > > What is the best app for reading books on an iPhone with a braille display? > I know of the ones like Kindle and iBooks that seem to work with voiceover; > however, I want an app that I can smoothly navigate using my braille > display. Re: Reading Books with Braille Display on iPhone
For Kindle, iBooks, Kobo, and Nook (Barnes and Noble), the specific app is your only option because the files are locked to the specific app. Therefore, in these cases, you have no choice but to learn and work with the specific quirks of these apps. I know that iBooks and Kindle work with braille displays, but I do not know if the page will automatically scroll, or if you will need to perform a dots 1 3 5 space, or dots 2 4 6 space between pages in order to turn pages. For the sighted, it is necessary to touch the screen on the righthand side with one finger and slide the finger across to the lefthand side in order to turn the page forward. This movement gives the sighted person more of the feeling of reading a book, so is preferred. If the file is an unlocked PDF, unlocked ePub, text, or other standard file format, there are several options for viewing the file. I do not know which options provide continuous braille reading as I mainly listen. I primarily use braille for reviewing / editing. Interestingly, there is a speed-reading app in the App Store now that flashes one word at a time on the display. Sighted people are reporting reading speeds, with comprehension, of up to 800 words per minute. Re: Reading Books with Braille Display on iPhone
The Kindle and iBooks apps do require a page turn. The problem with most continuous reading apps is that with things like the native Notes app, it isn't possible to set bookmarks. in Bard, for example, when first opening a Braille book, pressing r will put you in the text window at the last reading position. that speed-reading app is a fascinating concept. Richard, I like kindle better than Ibooks and nook because it doesn't require as many keystrokes. you just do the press to go to the next page and the text immediately appears. with nook and Ibooks, since there are buttons on the book screen, it's more clunky. also, I like the Read2Go app for reading books. that one is very smooth. I haven't tried the BARD app with a braille book yet. have a blessed day, Nicki If you enjoy college football or the NFL, come join us at our new group, touchdowncrazy. Re: Reading Books with Braille Display on iPhone
Hi. I have found an app, that I like very much, it has some lacks, but hopefully the developer will listen. It is called chm plus, it can read many formats html, txt, DRM free epub, PDF etc. Best of all, you can use the search function, although it is a little strange. I will explain if people wants me, it is a bit strange, how that works. But I really like the app, and I wish that bookmarks would be fixed, so we can use them with voiceover, when/if that will happen, we have a good reading app with braille, as good apple will allow us to have it, I think. You can read continuously in this app, it is the best I have found so far. Is there any way to get the bard app if you are living outside the u.s. It sounds interesting. Best regards Annie. Hi. There are several of these speed-reading apps, which one is it you are refering to. Thank you an advance. Best regards Annie. I apologise, I heard about it on the Today in iOS podcast. I did not make a note of the name of the app. David Chittenden, MSc, MRCAA Email: dchitten...@gmail.com Mobile: +64 21 2288 288 Sent from my iPhone > On 3 Oct 2013, at 8:35, Annie Skov Nielsen wrote: > > Hi. > > There are several of these speed-reading apps, which one is it you are > refering to. > > Thank you an advance. > > Best regards Annie. >> Den Oct 1, 2013 kl. 3:32 AM skrev Teresa Cochran >> : >> >> The Kindle and iBooks apps do require a page turn. Re: Reading Books with Braille Display on iPhone
Ok I have downloaded one of these apps. I thought it could be a good idea for a braille user, if the words would change themselves, but the problem is that I can not get the words to change by themselves. There are a lot of these apps, maybe I should try another one, but I think it would be the same result. Best regards Annie.
