Re: Reading Kindle Books in Braille

2023-01-01 Thread Anna Dresner
Hello Kelly,

I’m using a Brailliant BI 40 X with the latest beta on a 2020 iPhone SE. With
automatic panning on, I don’t have to do anything when switching pages in a
Kindle book; when I get to the bottom of one page, it switches to the next one
automatically. The braille commands for switching pages are O with Space to go
to the next one and OW-sign with Space to go to the previous one. I think you
said you were using a Mantis, and I don’t know what the equivalent commands
would be.

Best,
Anna

Hi,

That is what I thought but at least for me this doesn’t seem to work correctly.
I’m using an up-to-date iOS 16 with a Mantis Q40.

Re: Reading Kindle Books

2018-12-06 Thread Anna Dresner
Hi Robert,

Using default settings, you don't have to change pages. The app switches pages
automatically when you get to the bottom of a page.

If for some reason this doesn't happen, go to VoiceOver settings, choose
Braille, and turn on automatic display panning.

Best,
Anna

Hi Linda,

I like to read on my iPhone. First, because it always with me and
super convenient. Second, because the gestures are all ones I am very
familiar with so I don't have to recall a bunch of other commands.
Also, the accessibility of the kindle app on iOS is darn good.

It works great!
It is the only reason I ever buy Kindle books, since I do not like reading in
the Kindle app.
I use DropBox once I have converted the file to ePub and then import it into
Voice Dream.
It retains all the chapter markings, etc., if they are there in the Kindle book.
I couldn't be happier, and it is free.

Subsequently, in 2014, I started to develop a small prototype application to
make the process easier and more intuitive, not only for people wanting to read
Kindle eBooks, but also for me when people needed help. I named it Codex, a
word used from the 16th century onwards to denote, now ancient, manuscripts in
book form. In the second half of 2015, I finally rewrote that prototype to
include the functionality I wanted it to have from the start, and the software
is now publically available to download.

Please note, that you can only convert books you have purchased and only for
your use--you cannot share them with others without violating the copyright
laws and cheating the author out of their tiny royalties.
In order to convert your Kindle books with Codex, you will need to install
Kindle For PC version 1.17, which you can get here:

Likewise, I use voice dream reader with the neospeech kate to read my books.
In my case, After I convert the book to epub, I use the windows send to
option to send the attachment to my ipad email account. Then I open the
attachment in the mail app.

It works great!
It is the only reason I ever buy Kindle books, since I do not like reading
in the Kindle app.
I use DropBox once I have converted the file to ePub and then import it into
Voice Dream.
It retains all the chapter markings, etc., if they are there in the Kindle
book.

I couldn't be happier, and it is free.

Re: Reading kindle books

2016-10-02 Thread Richard Turner

Without some extra work, Kindle books can only be read with the Kindle app.
However, if you have a Windows computer, you can get a program called Codex
that can convert them to ePub so you can read them in Voice Dream Reader.

reading kindle books

2013-10-16 Thread Patti Johnson
Hi, I am reading my first Kindle book in the app. But I am afraid I
have made an error in turning the page turn animator off, but now I
can't find settings in the app. I just thought it would be a visual
thing and I wouldn't need it turned on.
Even so, I am using an older focus 40 Braille display and can't seem to
turn pages with this app in the way I do it in Ibooks.
So how do I turn pages, and do I need to change that setting to on, and
how can I go back to settings? It doesn't appear now that the book has
been opened.

It's not showing up in Menus.
Any ideas, I'm probably missing the obvious but I do that sometimes, sigh.
Thanks,
Patti

Re: reading kindle books

2013-10-16 Thread Eileens Misrahi
Hi Patty,

If you see the Home button in the upper left hand corner, double tap on it. If
not, open the Kindle menu with a single finger double tap and then find the
Home button in the upper left hand corner. Once the home Kindle screen is
opened, in the bottom doc the second tab from the lower left hand corner is the
settings tab. Double tap on it. I checked my settings for automatic page
turning and it is toggled off. I'm not sure if this applies to the Focus Blue,
but with my Braille Note I need to perform a pass through gesture of pressing
ddots 4-5-6 and enter together before using dots 2-4-6 with the space bar. What
about using a 3 finger swipe from right to left to turn the page? HTH.

If you have the two rocker bars on the front of the display, you should be able
to use the right one. Press this down to advance a horizontal page. This also
works in iBooks. Also, as an alternative, you can use dots 1-3-5-space to
advance a page. You should be inside the text when you perform these commands.

Hello Keith,

If the books you need aren't available from the iBook Store, try Kobo books.
The Kobo app is accessible on the iPhone and they have a huge selection of
books.

Cheers,

Re: Reading Kindle Books on the iPhone

2012-05-23 Thread Chanelle Allen
Hi Keith,

Getting books from iBooks is the most accessible. Before I had iBooks installed
on my iPhone, I would purchase Kindle books and then convert them with some
software designed to unlock or get rid of the license. I don't know if it would
be all right to post directions and the set of files that someone has developed
to the list. I can tell you that I found the information via Google. A post to
Top Tech Tidbits last year gave a download link to a Zip file with the needed
programs and instructions. I don't think that the files include anything for
converting to EPUB. Stanza will do the job though as well as a free online EPUB
converter.
I apologize if I have said too much.
