Hello to Cory and Seacord, a lot of the phone companies are still working on updating their towers to be able to support the 4G LTE service here in the states is another reason why you could be experiencing problems. I'm also experiencing issues with Sprint who is been very fasting good for the last few years that I've had them up until a few months ago. it really depends on where you use t-mobile. Their networks is well not the best. I expect you would have had better results using Verizon or AT&T. yes more expensive but you do get what you pay for. Re: T mobile users out there, question
I live in Chicago and use the T-Mobile prepaid $30 a month plan that I described in my article on iPhone on the cheap. I have an iPhone 5 from December 2012, before Apple supported the AWS band. I regularly obtain download speeds of 10 Mbps and upload speeds 700 to 900 Kbps. Sometimes my upload speeds are one Mbps. When I visit family in northern Indiana, the iPhone falls back to 2G EDGE speeds that are only two to three times as fast as a dial-up internet connection. By next spring or summer, T-Mobile said that all cell towers will be refarmed to HSPA+ and/or LTE, making this a non-issue. Call quality is excellent and very clear. My calls are much clearer than on a friend’s iPhone 5 with AT&T. With the $30 a month plan T-Mobile says that five Gb of data is at LTE speeds and speeds are reduced to EDGE when five GB of data is used in a month. I listen to iTunes radio, TuneIn and download two or three talking books from NLS each month and I don’t even chew up one megabyte of data. Re: T mobile users out there, question
Hi Keith, unfortunately the Verizon iPhone 5 is also missing that AWS band and what's more, it isn't compatible with T-Mobile's LTE network either. This means compatibility with T-Mobile will be limited to 2G speeds except in areas where T-Mobile has refarmed their HSPA spectrum to 1900 mHz (non-AWS). I'm not familiar with the coverage maps, but many major cities have been refarmed. In any case the phone must be unlocked. RE: T mobile users out there, question
Hi again. I haven't used the amount where they may throttle back your data speed. I also have a WI-FI hot spot, and I specificly asked them if I could get an unlimited data plan for it. They said I couldn't. The maximum amount of data that I can get for my hot spot is 12 gigs per month, which is quite a bit. They advertise their cell phone data plan as unlimited, so that's what I'm assuming, but you know what happens when you assume. I don't download a lot with my iPhone. I listen to iTunes Radio and sports, and that's it. If I encounter any problem with running into a throttle back on my cell phone, I'll call them up to get a clarification of their so called unlimited plan. Here's an update. I just called up T Mobile, and I specificly asked if my cell plan was truly unlimited data, and they said it was. If, however, I used my iPhone as a tethered hot spot, I'm limited to 500 MB of data using it that way. Since I have a mobile hot spot I'm not going to use my iPhone as a hot spot. RE: T mobile users out there, question
How much data have you used in a month? I've heard they might ramp down your speed of access beyond a certain # of GB of data usage over a month. Have you run into this? I have T Mobile's unlimited data plan, and I like it for two reasons. Obviously, it's unlimited. The other reason why I like it is there's no contract. RE: T mobile users out there, question
I live in Canada but when I travel to the US I use a T-Mobile prepaid line. This means I can give you some information about T-Mobile's performance with an iPhone. First of all, if you have an iPhone 5 manufactured before mid-April 2013, or an older model of iPhone, it is missing the 1700/2100 AWS band that T-Mobile uses. This means that in certain areas you won't be able to use DC-HSPA and you will fall back to GSM which means that your data will be a lot slower. However, T-Mobile is refarming a lot of their spectrum to not use AWS, so especially in major cities, this won't be an issue. And of course if you have a GSM iPhone 5 you'll get access to T-Mobile's LTE network where available, also making the lack of AWS a non-issue in those areas. The GSM iPhone 5S offers full compatibility with T-Mobile, as does the GSM iPhone 5 manufactured after mid-April 2013. In the past year I've been to Phoenix and Orlando. In the former case I had an iPhone 5 that was missing the AWS band; in the latter case I had an iPhone 5 that was fully compatible. In both cases, T-Mobile's network was lightning fast and without any hiccups. If I lived in the United States, I would sign up for T-Mobile in a heartbeat. Of course, this will depend a lot on T-Mobile's coverage where you are, so you could check the coverage map or try a prepaid line before signing up. Unlimited data on T-Mobile is pretty sweet, but they do block tethering unless you pay extra. Hope this helps.
