Hello to Cory and Seacord, a lot of the phone companies are still working on
updating their towers to be able to support the 4G LTE service here in the
states is another reason why you could be experiencing problems. I'm also
experiencing issues with Sprint who is been very fasting good for the last few
years that I've had them up until a few months ago.

it really depends on where you use t-mobile. Their networks is well not the
best. I expect you would have had better results using Verizon or AT&T. yes
more expensive but you do get what you pay for.

question

I was in Las Vegas a few weeks ago and while I was only there for 4 days at
a trade show, I still wanted to be able to have access to my email and use
Facetime and other VoIP services. I have an unlocked iPhone 5S which I
bought from Apple here in Canada directly.
I went to a T-Mobile store in a mall and bought a Nano SIM for $10.
On top of that I spend $15 for 5 days of service at $3/day.
I was told this would give me unlimited calling and texting in the States
and 200 Mb of data each day.
Where I live in Canada we don't yet have LTE service and I was looking
forward to seeing how fast this was. I was shocked how poor the coverage in
general seemed to be. I sometimes had LTE showing in the status bar when I
was outside and at one point I was walking from the Flamingo where I was
staying to the Mirage where the trade show was. Both resorts are on the
south end of Las Vegas Boulevard right in the heart of the Strip and as I
was walking it showed LTE and 5 of 5 bars signal strength. I started
Blindsquare and since I hadn't used it since I got my 5S it wanted to
download the additional voice. The download was 25 Mb and I thought this
would take a few seconds on LTE. I started the download and after my almost
10 minute walk to the Mirage it had downloaded less than 20% and all in all
I think the download took about an hour. On the 11th floor of my hotel in an
outside room I could hardly use my phone because I only had 1 or, if I was
luck 2 out of 5 bars signal strength and the status bar displayed 4G all the
time which I thought was something only AT&T was doing.
All in all I was quite disappointed in the service and I ended up spending
another $15 for 2 days of WiFi access at the convention centre where the
show took place and that turned out to be much more reliable for email, VoIP
calls and so on.
When I ran a speed test in Vancouver at the airport the LTE connection gave
me 21 Mb/s down and almost 8 Mb/s up which I thought was pretty impressive.

I live in Chicago and use the T-Mobile prepaid $30 a month plan that I
described in my article on iPhone on the cheap. I have an iPhone 5 from
December 2012, before Apple supported the AWS band. I regularly obtain
download speeds of 10 Mbps and upload speeds 700 to 900 Kbps.
Sometimes my upload speeds are one Mbps. When I visit family in northern
Indiana, the iPhone falls back to 2G EDGE speeds that are only two to three
times as fast as a dial-up internet connection. By next spring or summer,
T-Mobile said that all cell towers will be refarmed to HSPA+ and/or LTE,
making this a non-issue.

Call quality is excellent and very clear. My calls are much clearer than on
a friend's iPhone 5 with AT&T. With the $30 a month plan T-Mobile says that
five Gb of data is at LTE speeds and speeds are reduced to EDGE when five GB
of data is used in a month. I listen to iTunes radio, TuneIn and download
two or three talking books from NLS each month and I don't even chew up one
megabyte of data.

Re: T mobile users out there, question

2013-10-28 Thread Grant Hardy
Hi Keith, unfortunately the Verizon iPhone 5 is also missing that AWS band and
what's more, it isn't compatible with T-Mobile's LTE network either. This means
compatibility with T-Mobile will be limited to 2G speeds except in areas where
T-Mobile has refarmed their HSPA spectrum to 1900 mHz (non-AWS). I'm not
familiar with the coverage maps, but many major cities have been refarmed. In
any case the phone must be unlocked.

RE: T mobile users out there, question

2013-10-27 Thread Kevin Minor
Hi again.

I haven't used the amount where they may throttle back your data speed. I
also have a WI-FI hot spot, and I specificly asked them if I could get an
unlimited data plan for it. They said I couldn't. The maximum amount of
data that I can get for my hot spot is 12 gigs per month, which is quite a
bit. They advertise their cell phone data plan as unlimited, so that's what
I'm assuming, but you know what happens when you assume. I don't download a
lot with my iPhone. I listen to iTunes Radio and sports, and that's it. If
I encounter any problem with running into a throttle back on my cell phone,
I'll call them up to get a clarification of their so called unlimited plan.

Here's an update. I just called up T Mobile, and I specificly asked if my
cell plan was truly unlimited data, and they said it was. If, however, I
used my iPhone as a tethered hot spot, I'm limited to 500 MB of data using
it that way. Since I have a mobile hot spot I'm not going to use my iPhone
as a hot spot.

RE: T mobile users out there, question

2013-10-27 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
Is the referred to AUS band the same as the Verizon CDMA? I have an iPhone 5
under contract with Verizon, and am wondering what options I may have when it
comes off contract in a year. I'm certainly intrigued by T-Mobile.

Subject: RE: T mobile users out there, question

I live in Canada but when I travel to the US I use a T-Mobile prepaid line.
This means I can give you some information about T-Mobile's performance with an
iPhone. First of all, if you have an iPhone 5 manufactured before mid-April
2013, or an older model of iPhone, it is missing the 1700/2100 AWS band that
T-Mobile uses. This means that in certain areas you won't be able to use
DC-HSPA and you will fall back to GSM which means that your data will be a lot
slower. However, T-Mobile is refarming a lot of their spectrum to not use AWS,
so especially in major cities, this won't be an issue. And of course if you
have a GSM iPhone 5 you'll get access to T-Mobile's LTE network where
available, also making the lack of AWS a non-issue in those areas. The GSM
iPhone 5S offers full compatibility with T-Mobile, as does the GSM iPhone 5
manufactured after mid-April 2013.

In the past year I've been to Phoenix and Orlando. In the former case I had an
iPhone 5 that was missing the AWS band; in the latter case I had an iPhone 5
that was fully compatible. In both cases, T-Mobile's network was lightning fast
and without any hiccups. If I lived in the United States, I would sign up for
T-Mobile in a heartbeat. Of course, this will depend a lot on T-Mobile's
coverage where you are, so you could check the coverage map or try a prepaid
line before signing up. Unlimited data on T-Mobile is pretty sweet, but they do
block tethering unless you pay extra.

Hope this helps.

I'm not a T-Mobile user, but from googling around, it looks like
T-Mobile stopped throttling their unlimited data plans last fall.

Hi.

I have T Mobile’s unlimited data plan, and I like it for two reasons.
Obviously, it’s unlimited. The other reason why I like it is there’s no
contract.
