Alan,

The pronunciation of names by SIRI has nothing to do with Alex, the new
Voiceover voice (new on iDevices at least). Apple has not said anything
about new SIRI voices so I would say they stay the same.

I saved this and was going to try it out but I then decided to wait until
iOS 8 comes out and maybe I won't need to make any changes then. I'm
looking forward to hearing that new voice who adds breath sounds for more
realism. I'd rather have a better voice though but we'll see heh!

Ok all, couldn't resist, so I experimented a bit more, and here is how I
used Siri to change how it pronounces odd names:
1. Ask Siri to "Contact x" (where X is the person with the oddly spoken
name).

2. Regardless of Siri's answer, press the Home button to essentially
cancel

the request.

3. Now, press the Home button once again and say the following to Siri:
That is not how you pronounce X.
Note: remember, X is the person's unusual name.

4. Siri will ask you: "Ok, how do you pronounce the name X?" Siri will
wait

for an answer, so go ahead and say out loud the person's name.

5. After saying the person's name, the next prompt you will get is Siri
asking: "Ok, thank you, which pronunciation should I use?"

6. At this point use a 4-finger single tap to go to the top of the screen
and swipe to the right to read the screen. When you reach "Play option 1"
you will double-tap to hear the new Siri pronunciation. You will probably
get three choices, so listen to them in the same way just described. when
you are ready to make a choice simply double-tap on the "Select button"
associated with the desired option.

7. You will be asked to choose a pronunciation for any remaining parts of
the person's name such as left middle and last name.

8. When the process has completed, you will hear one of two messages:
"Thanks for correcting me on that, I'll pronounce it as X from now on."
or
"Great, I'll pronounce it "X" from now on."
If you are not presented with these Siri replies, it is likely the changes
did not go through so try again.

9. If all went well, press the Home button to close any remaining Siri
screen.

10. Now test your pronunciation changes by asking Siri "Contact x." You
should hear Siri speak the new name.

If you can get this feature to work, it is very, very cool!

Hi

Thank you for that. So, I will then say the first name as Siri says it, and
then has to go through all the steps to teach it to say the surname
correctly? Will give this a try. It would be rather strange if you have to
do that for contacts with a simular surname though, but will try and see
what happens.

It seems that you have to go through the whole name. You would choose how
the first name is spoken, then the last.
Also, I believe you have to do it to each contact with that last name.

Hi

I was wondering if you were only to change the last name, would you still
speak out the whole contact name then, as the name might be spoken
correctly, but you only want to change the surname for instanse?
I have a few contacts where the first names are okay, but I would want to
change the surname spoken.

Thanks for an interesting topic.

Teaching Siri How to Say Complicated Names

If you want to teach her how to properly pronounce a name, just open up Siri
and tell her, "That's not how you pronounce [name goes here]." From there,
she'll give you several options as to who's name you want her to learn, if
she doesn't already recognize it.

As an example, I used Marielle Escobar from my contacts. Siri pronounces the
first name as Marielle, when it should be pronounced Mary-Lee, so I opened
up Siri and said "That's not how you pronounce Marielle."

Siri then asks me, "OK, how do you pronounce the name (Marielle)?"

I then pronounce the name the correct way (Mary-Lee) and Siri gives me three
options to choose from, all slight variations of Mary-Lee, if not exact
replicas. If none of those sound correct, you can tell Siri again. If an
option works, press Select.

Once you select it, Siri will ask you about the last name. You can pronounce

Ok all, couldn't resist, so I experimented a bit more, and here is how I
used Siri to change how it pronounces odd names:
1. Ask Siri to "Contact x" (where X is the person with the oddly spoken
name).

2. Regardless of Siri's answer, press the Home button to essentially cancel
the request.

3. Now, press the Home button once again and say the following to Siri:
That is not how you pronounce X.
Note: remember, X is the person's unusual name.

4. Siri will ask you: "Ok, how do you pronounce the name X?" Siri will wait
for an answer, so go ahead and say out loud the person's name.

When working with Siri, try slowing down or speeding up your voice. I find
that if I try to mimic a slow talking drunk person Siri will just about
always get my request correct. I've also found speaking words with very
small gaps between each of the words works well--its as if Siri needs to
process each word before moving on to the next. I know one should speak
normally, but finding different ways of talking to Siri works best. You will
sound a bit crazy at first, but in time you will learn your best speech
pattern for yielding best results.

I want to also add that this technique will not improve Siri's understanding
of what it is you would like to do, it will only change the way Siri
pronounces uncommon words such as people's names.

Thanks Joe for posting this going to try it today as I have noticed lately
that I think Siri has been smoking something as the pronunciation and her
understanding what I have been saying has been getting worst and worst. For
example, I ask her to call Mike Cohen and several times she says calling
Wali Collins. In no way do those two names sound even remotely close, and
this has happened a few times. I said to her to call Mom, and she said what
is your Mom's name? Strange as this has always worked so I said Barbara
Fischler, and she said no contact information for Brian Fischler. Ok that
was weird. I have also noticed when I use the dictation feature which I use
all the time she has become unusable when trying to dictate a reminder, not
sure why dictation can work so good in other areas but so awful in or when
trying to record a reminder.. Hopefully in IOS 8 Siri will get smarter or at
least stop smoking whatever has been making her dumber.

The steps work great. As Joseph indicates, you might have to do it a few
times. The first two times I tried with a contact, it didn't seem to work.
However, I've now corrected three names using the steps. Sometimes, the
alternatives she offers are not correct and you might have to pronounce the
name again for more alternatives. I had to do this twice with one contact.

Yes, unfortunately, it is not easy at first as demonstrated by my initial
post on the matter, but if you stick with it and experiment a bit you will
find you can quickly and reliably complete this process as many times as
necessary. The key is to hear the completion message as VoiceOver won't
always read what Siri has spoken. Here is another YouTube video describing

Hi all, Joseph I want to thank you for the instructions for teaching Siri how
to pronounce names. It worked very well for me but I did have to do the process
to her three times to get it to work. I think sometimes it just takes timing
and speed perhaps I don't know but it did work for me so thank you very much

Hi all,

Came across the following instructions to teach Siri to pronounce foreign
and uncommon names more naturally. I could not get this to work. Hoping
someone will post better instructions. . For now, its definitely
possible as this YouTube video demonstrates:

? Teach Siri to Pronounce Contact Names Correctly in iOS 7 - iPhone
[How-To] - YouTube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPcYB3bysFQ

Here are the written instructions:

You can pronounce
it as well, even if it's already correct. It will then do the same thing
again, giving you three options to choose from. Once you're done, Siri will
say, "Great, I'll pronounce it "First Name, Last Name" and you'll be ready
to go.

No more Siri massacring our exotic names.

should hear Siri speak the new name.

If you can get this feature to work, it is very, very cool!

Subject: Teaching Siri to pronounce names

You can pronounce
it as well, even if it's already correct. It will then do the same thing
again, giving you three options to choose from. Once you're done, Siri will
say, "Great, I'll pronounce it "First Name, Last Name" and you'll be ready
to go.

No more Siri massacring our exotic names.
