To AppleCare or not....that is the question

2019-02-10 Thread 'Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.' via VIPhone
Hi,

I have always routinely purchased AppleCare, but have never really had any
reason to use it.

I still have a few weeks before the deadline for purchasing AppleCare for my XS.

I'm curious how others on this list are viewing AppleCare.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Best, Keith

Re: To AppleCare or not....that is the question

2019-02-10 Thread 'Marcio' via VIPhone

Hi,
Well I'm not that much into Apple stuff. I just have an iPod Touch. Also
I've really never heard about such AppleCare.
It may have another name on my country and as I'm not that Apple expert,
don't know.
However, from what I've heard on the lists I am on, when you call the
Apple Support they say that if you use whatever accessibility feature
you don't need AppleCare to be answered.

I'm sure it won't help almost in any way, but if you find use for at
least one of the words I wrote I'll be glad :)

Cheers,
Marcio

Hi,
I think it is to expensive. However I buy it each time I upgrade a phone. I
have had 3 phones replaced under Apple Care. The last was my iPhoneXs, it had a
hardware fault I couldn’t plug in the cord to charge the phone.
Max.

RE: To AppleCare or not....that is the question

2019-02-10 Thread Carolyn Arnold
When I first got an iPhone, my daughter-in-law said, you need Apple Care. Well
she does, because she and my granddaughters are always going around with
cracked screens. I didn't keep it. It could be that life style has something to
do with it. At that time, I had a Verizon plan and Apple Care for phone
maintenance and some other kind of insurance for if my phone was lost or
stolen. I have neither now.

Best regards,

Carolyn

RE: To AppleCare or not....that is the question

2019-02-10 Thread Cristobal Muñoz
I got the $249 Apple Care for my 256 GB XR. Damage, Theft and loss. It’s
basically my iPad. I also use it for my business. it didn’t hurt as much to
shell out the extra $250 since I can right it off anyway.

In general, I’m not a klutz, but still, I’ve dropped my phone like anyone else
and since this phone ended up costing me more than my laptop and I basically do
everything on it… thus my springing for the insurance.

I remember my first iPhone, a 4S, got the volume down button stuck. I ended up
using the on screen volume control for a while which sucked. it turned out to
be an issue with a batch of 4S phones so Sprint in that case swapped it out for
a refurbished one. Another time, I bought an iPhone 5 off of eBay. It was
working fine for a while, but then the battery stopped holding a charge and the
power button was acting all funky. There was a notice about a program to get
certain iPhones with a wonky power button fixed at no cost so I took my phone
into my local Apple store and after the guy checked it out, noticed the power
button and something else with the battery and something else that I can’t
remember anymore, he just exchanged it for a brand new iPhone 5. Didn’t even
ask me for a receipt or anything.

While I have yet to crack any of my phone’s screens and always slap a screen
protector on them and have them in a case, you never know. It would suck big
time to break your $300 or $400 phone and maybe at that price range, it may not
make the most sense to get the insurance, but close to $1000? I got the Apple
Care protection this time.

RE: To AppleCare or not....that is the question

2019-02-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Just so you know, Apple Care Plus does not cover loss or theft.
It covers accidental damage I think twice, once for each of the two years, but
if your phone needs to be replaced that is also not free. I have no idea how
much it costs nowadays with the expensive phones like the XR or XS.
Gone are the days when Apple Care Plus was $79 or $99. The last time I had
Apple Care Plus was on my 6S Plus back in 2015. I lost that phone about 3
months after I got it when I was visiting my families ranch at Christmas that
year. I went for a walk up their driveway which is gravel and about three
quarters of a mile long. At the time it was of course covered in snow since we
are talking about northern British Columbia and the temperature was minus 30
Celsius (about minus 22 Fahrenheit. When I got back home I realized the phone
wasn't in the chest pocket of my down parka. Trying to call it or use Find my
iPhone was useless because in these temperatures and without being close to
body heat the phone would have shut down in less than 5 minutes. Various
members of my family spent about 10 hours searching without luck. Fortunately I
had my phone added to my homeowner's insurance as an extra item with a 0
deductible. That only costs about $30 a year extra and unlike Apple Care Plus
it does cover loss or theft. The insurance paid the full price for a new phone.
About 4 months later after the snow was gone in mid April my brother found the
phone. I asked him to stick it in a bag of rice and mail it to me, that took a
few days and when it arrived I took it out and plugged it in. At first nothing
happened, but to my surprise when I checked it an hour or so later Voiceover
came right up, I could unlock it with my PIN and as soon as I did it started
dinging and making all sorts of noises as it connected to my WiFi and 4 months
worth of emails, messages and notifications went off. In the end I realized
that the phone worked perfectly fine with two exceptions: the screen was black
in other words it somehow didn't work any more even though I could do anything
using Voiceover. And yes, I did of course check if the screen curtain was on
and it was not. The second issue was that the camera did not work any more. Now
that I had the physical phone back I took it to an Apple Store and after paying
$129.99 Canadian they replaced it with a new phone.
Quite a few people on this list who have been here for a few years heard the
story before, but I recounted it just to make the point that just the cost of
Apple Care Plus does not cover a phone replacement. Given how expensive Apple
Care Plus has become I am no longer buying it. Water damage is almost
impossible nowadays with an iPhone 8 or anything above it because the phones
are virtually waterproof and the X series phones even more so than the 8 and
the 8 is more waterproof than the 7. I much rather spend the money to have the
phone covered through my homeowner's insurance, it's cheaper and it will cover
loss or theft.

Regards,
Sieghard

2019-02-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
In case you didn’t read through all of my message I think at this point that
Apple Care Plus has become too expensive. I used to recommend it, but now that
the phones are so expensive the insurance has become equally expensive.
If I were you I’d inquire with your homeowner’s insurance if you can add your
iPhone XS to it on a separate rider with a 0 deductible, if they do it you
might be surprised about how inexpensive that is compared to Apple Care and
that would also cover loss or theft, but to make sure ask them exactly what it
does cover.

Re: To AppleCare or not....that is the question

2019-02-10 Thread Robin Frost

Hi,
Just wanted to mention that actually now there is a theft and loss option
which one can integrate into Apple Care Plus with the newer phones. It is
under written by the same company that does so for various carriers in the
USA and actually for me turned out to be cheaper annually than it would have
been to get it separately through my carrier thus I integrated it into my
coverage.
Apple also now offers a monthly subscription to Apple Care for the newer
phones perhaps all models I'm not sure but that is another option to make
the financial hit easier to take.
I myself have always gotten the coverage as the investment into the device
is a significant one and I also appreciate the ability to be able to call
Apple with any questions I might have beyond the initial 60 days oar there
abouts. But to each their own. All must do that which best suits their
circumstances.

Just so you know, Apple Care Plus does not cover loss or theft.
It covers accidental damage I think twice, once for each of the two years,
but if your phone needs to be replaced that is also not free. I have no idea
how much it costs nowadays with the expensive phones like the XR or XS.
Gone are the days when Apple Care Plus was $79 or $99. The last time I had
Apple Care Plus was on my 6S Plus back in 2015. I lost that phone about 3
months after I got it when I was visiting my families ranch at Christmas
that year. I went for a walk up their driveway which is gravel and about
three quarters of a mile long. At the time it was of course covered in snow
since we are talking about northern British Columbia and the temperature was
minus 30 Celsius (about minus 22 Fahrenheit. When I got back home I realized
the phone wasn't in the chest pocket of my down parka. Trying to call it or
use Find my iPhone was useless because in these temperatures and without
being close to body heat the phone would have shut down in less than 5
minutes. Various members of my family spent about 10 hours searching without
luck. Fortunately I had my phone added to my homeowner's insurance as an
extra item with a 0 deductible. That only costs about $30 a year extra and
unlike Apple Care Plus it does cover loss or theft. The insurance paid the
full price for a new phone. About 4 months later after the snow was gone in
mid April my brother found the phone. I asked him to stick it in a bag of
rice and mail it to me, that took a few days and when it arrived I took it
out and plugged it in. At first nothing happened, but to my surprise when I
checked it an hour or so later Voiceover came right up, I could unlock it
with my PIN and as soon as I did it started dinging and making all sorts of
noises as it connected to my WiFi and 4 months worth of emails, messages and
notifications went off. In the end I realized that the phone worked
perfectly fine with two exceptions: the screen was black in other words it
somehow didn't work any more even though I could do anything using
Voiceover. And yes, I did of course check if the screen curtain was on and
it was not. The second issue was that the camera did not work any more. Now
that I had the physical phone back I took it to an Apple Store and after
paying $129.99 Canadian they replaced it with a new phone.
Quite a few people on this list who have been here for a few years heard the
story before, but I recounted it just to make the point that just the cost
of Apple Care Plus does not cover a phone replacement. Given how expensive
Apple Care Plus has become I am no longer buying it. Water damage is almost
impossible nowadays with an iPhone 8 or anything above it because the phones
are virtually waterproof and the X series phones even more so than the 8 and
the 8 is more waterproof than the 7. I much rather spend the money to have
the phone covered through my homeowner's insurance, it's cheaper and it will
cover loss or theft.

Sieghard

RE: To AppleCare or not....that is the question

2019-02-10 Thread Alan Lemly
Keith,

I'm not normally a fan of insurance for electronics since I'm extremely careful
with my items and don't feel I get value for my insurance money. However, my
iPhone is the exception to that rule. Since I'm always using my iPhone and it's
constantly in motion, the opportunity for it to be accidentally damaged seems a
real risk that justifies the insurance cost. Whether you get a better value by
adding the phone to your homeowner's policy as Sieghard suggests or through
Apple Care you'll have to determine. I chose to get Apple Care for the 3
iPhones I've bought new and was certainly glad I did for my iPhone 5. The
headphone jack on it went out and I was given a new replacement phone at the
Apple Store thanks to the Apple Care coverage. It sounds as if they don't do
this anymore without some sort of charge but I've still been buying the
coverage. I like the ability to call them with questions for the extra year the
coverage gets you.

Good luck with your decision.

2019-02-10 Thread Cristobal Munoz
Correct. There is a theft and loss plan. Maybe because I didn’t say Apple Care
Plus I guess. It covers two years. Since I didn’t get the phone through the
carrier, I just went ahead and made the one time payment instead of spreading
it out which would’ve brought it to around $300 or something.
Also in my case, I opened a new credit card in anticipation of getting a new
phone and some other large purchases I needed to make. I got 18 months of zero
interest, 1 to 3% cash back depending on what you charge and $150 back if you
charged more than $500 within 90 days. The usual card churning perks you look
for when card reward surfing.
For me, the math worked out. I financed the phone for free and got something
back to set off the price. My 0% goes through February of 2020.
Everyone’s got to make their own determination though. This was my first time
getting Apple Care Plus. On Feb 10, 2019, at 8:25 PM, Robin Frost

Hi,

I recommend it even if you never use it as if something goes wrong you will be
good to go. I usually try to get insurance for my devices if possible as I
feel that not having it is go wrong and not have it and you have to pay more
out of pocket to get it fixed. JMO.

Re: To AppleCare or not....that is the question

2019-02-11 Thread Wayne Merritt
At one time, buying a new iPhone at the Apple Store or through the
major US carriers would automatically give you a year of Apple Care.
I'm not sure if this is true anymore, but I learned of the added
coverage when I had a small issue with my phone a few years ago. I
took it to the Apple Store and one of their reps informed me of the
year coverage. The US insurance company which offers insurance
coverage for an added fee is called Asurian, or something like that.
My wife dropped her phone last fall and had it replaced. Last week,
she was shopping and reported to me later that the phone jumped out of
the cart, and the screen cracked again. She will be contacting Asurian
soon to get it replaced a second time. I think that we're going to
invest in a strong screen protector for her phone given the frequency
of these accidents. I think the Asurian coverage will cover up to 2
replacements per year but am not sure. I have not gotten any
additional Apple Care, other than the one I had mentioned above, since
I'm always very careful. I learned from a coworker that Tech Armour
makes some ballistic strength glass screen protectors for about $10 on
Amazon, which sound like agreat investment, especially if those
little accidents happen.

give you additional coverage during that first year and for a second year.
Not sure if the regular 1-year warranty covers accidenmtal damage like if you
were to drop the phone or if it is just a warranty should something go wrong
with the phone which is a manufacturers defect.

Re: To AppleCare or not....that is the question

2019-02-11 Thread Brent Harding
I had a problem back with the iPhone 7, where the charging just quit working
randomly one day. Apple did replace it for free while I still had Apple
Care, I think you get your first year free, and what you're paying for is
the second year, but when the second one exhibited the same exact issue, I
ended up having to pay around $300 for a replacement, because the first year
coverage had lapsed by then. Now, I am on the Apple upgrade plan, where a
256 GB XR is about $43 a month with Apple Care included. Since these are
effectively 0 interest loans with the option to upgrade after the first
year, it seems mathematically the same as if you paid it up all at once with
the Apple Care included. I am glad that the XR seems to have a lot sturdier
connection when you plug in the lightning cord, it seems to take more force
to pull it out of there than the 7's did, but hopefully whatever was made
defectively in a few batches back then won't be a problem again. I would've
thought for sure they would fix the port and send back the one I had, but
something leads me to believe that the problem was with something else, as
they didn't look damaged or anything that one could easily see. The other
benefit I heard you can get with Apple Care is that they will overnight you
a different phone to use first if you give them a credit card, and then once
they fix your broken one, you either send in the replacement after they send
that back, or if is something they can't fix easily, you keep the
replacement and they do whatever they do with the old one and it's no
charge. I thought about adding the loss and theft coverage for piece of
mind, but there are probably better third-party ways to get insurance for
that type of thing that cost less.

consider an insurance plan from your carrier. I am with Xfinity Mobile
and I bought an iPhone Xs and have an insurance plan for $12 a month.
It covers theft, loss, and accidental damage. It also includes an
upgrade after one year. It is more coverage than Apple Care at a
fraction of the price. Service is performed at an Apple store, just
as if I had Apple Care.

2019-02-16 Thread Brian K. Lingard
Dear Keith & List:
AppleCare Plus provides extended warranty on your device for one year. I have
found it covers all perils, including sheer stupidity on my part! There is a
small co-pay for repairs or device replacement. It also provides telephone
support for two years on the device.

If you use any of the accessibility provisions of IOS, such as voiceover,
magnifier, larger text, hearing aids, you may use Apple Accessibility Answer
Desk (877) 204-3930. Unlike regular Apple Support, they do not ask if the unit
has AppleCare Plus on it. If you only want AppleCare for telephone support, you
do not need it if you use an Accessibility feature and call Apple accessibility
support. If you want the hardware damage theft & loss coverage, AppleCare Plus
is for you.

Check also with your home insurance company to see what they provide for
IPhone, IPad, I watch etc. coverage for damage, loss or theft, and the
deductible if any. They may be cheaper than AppleCare Plus, but I found my
Underwriter, TD Melosh Insurance was more expensive.

The handset insurance from your Cellular Carrier only says they must provide a
same model phone in good working order, it could be a trade-in, not new! There
is a co-pay and for a smartphone it is generally higher than a dumb phone. Ask
what their coverage costs & what it pays,, and are there any exclusions, such
as you dropping your device into the Mississippi or Allegheny River while
walking across the Memphis Bridge which connects Memphis TN to West Memphis, AR.

RE: To AppleCare or not....that is the question

2019-02-16 Thread Brian K. Lingard
Dear Sieghard & List:
I was told by Apple Accessibility Answer desk a few months ago, that AppleCare
Plus now covers device loss & theft, this is why the price increased. You are
lucky your home Underwriter covered the phone with zero deductible for $30/year
premium. Mine wanted a much higher premium. Decided not to cover the phone, too
expensive premium. Unlike USS Cellular Carriers, Bell Mobility does not offer
handset insurance far as I know. They also do not offer ring tones && caller
tones as US carriers do. Guess Bell does not like /Cash Cows.

About 4 months later after the snow was gone in mid-April my brother found the
phone. I asked him to stick it in a bag of rice and mail it to me, that took a
few days and when it arrived I took it out and plugged it in. At first nothing
happened, but to my surprise when I checked it an hour or so later Voiceover
came right up, I could unlock it with my PIN and as soon as I did it started
dinging and making all sorts of noises as it connected to my Wi-Fi and 4
months' worth of emails, messages and notifications went off. In the end I
realized that the phone worked perfectly fine with two exceptions: the screen
was black in other words it somehow didn't work anymore even though I could do
anything using Voiceover. And yes, I did of course check if the screen curtain
was on and it was not. The second issue was that the camera did not work
anymore. Now that I had the physical phone back I took it to an Apple Store and
after paying $129.99 Canadian they replaced it with a new phone.

Hi,
Well I'm not that much into Apple stuff. I just have an iPod Touch. Also I've
really never heard about such AppleCare.
It may have another name on my country and as I'm not that Apple expert, don't
know.
However, from what I've heard on the lists I am on, when you call the Apple
Support they say that if you use whatever accessibility feature you don't need
AppleCare to be answered.

I'm sure it won't help almost in any way, but if you find use for at least one

Kelly,

I'm not sure your math stating that your iPhone X insurance coverage is a
fraction of the cost of Apple Care works out. Apple Care is purchased when the
phone is new and gives two years of coverage from purchase date. If you
multiply your $12 a month times 24 months, that works out to $288 in total
which is considerably more than Apple Care. I don't know whether the coverage
is comparable but you must make the math comparable.

Actually Apple may give you a new or a refurbished phone, it is not guarantied
you get a brand-new one, but if you get an Apple refurbished phone it’s
practically like new one anyways.

. You can tell by the model number under Settings > General > About whether a
phone is new, refurbished, replaced or personalized.

Look for “Model” and then read the model identifier next to that text, it will
look something like “MN572LL/A”, the first character will let you know if the
device is new, refurbished, a replacement or personalized, here are the letters
you need to check:

M - Brand new device, meaning the device was purchased new

F - Refurbished device, meaning the device has been through refurbishing process

N - Replacement device, meaning the originally bought device was replaced by
this model likely due to a service request

P - Personalized device with engraving, meaning the device was customized with
an engraving on purchase

The full article is here: How to check if iPhone is new, refurbished,
replacement or
personalized<http://osxdaily.com/2018/01/27/determine-iphone-new-refurbished-replaced/>

You can also tell a lot from an iPhone's serial number, things like what
factory it was made in, what year and week it was made, the identifier, colour
and capacity, the information for this is in the below article:
