If you read some articles out there, that is how they suggest you do it. 
Also, using the thumbs as your primary means for Touch ID is also recommended 
over other fingers. When setting up Touch ID, try to place your finger in 
different angles each time you place it. This gives you a much better chance of 
always being able to unlocking the phone when you use it.

I get this behavior sometimes when my phone is lying flat on a table at a weird 
angle from me. It's probably the angle you're having to approach your phone 
from while it's charging. You may have to turn your phone a little if it's on a 
flat surface in order to approach its Touch ID senser straight on as you 
probably did when setting up your finger print for use with Touch ID. Does this 
make sense? I think this is one of the reasons the phone asks you to place your 
finger on the phone at so many angles when setting up the finger print.

I have an extremely strange problem. When my phone is charging, touch ID is 
very inconsistent and often just doesn't work, but when it is unplugged it 
works just fine pretty much every time. Has anybody else had this happen?
