Re: Using an iPhone without a Case
I looked into those when I first got my iPhone5. Most of the Amazon reviews seemed negative, and that was discouraging. Plus, I love the belt clip for my current case and would hate to lose that feature. I love the idea of the Invisible Shield, I'm just not sure how it would work for everyday use and shock protection. Plus, as you said, the screen needs to remain smooth for good Voi9ceover use, at least I think so. I guess I'd like to see a phone covered in this stuff and go from there. -- Have a great day, Alex mehg...@gmail.com On Feb 5, 2014, at 8:12 AM, Sieghard Weitzel wrote: > Hi Alex, > > If you like the feel of the iPhone as is but you want a more grippy surface > you might want to consider the Invisishield protectors from Zagg. RE: Using an iPhone without a Case
Hi Alex, If you like the feel of the iPhone as is but you want a more grippy surface you might want to consider the Invisishield protectors from Zagg. The material they use is the same as what they put on helicopter windshields for flying in desert conditions where sand can quickly dull the glass. They are made from a self-healing material which has a very rubbery, grippy texture and you can get just a screen protector or you can get them also for the back and the sides of your phone. Here in Canada they often have a booth at larger malls and they also offer to put them on for a small free which is a good idea especially for us blind folks. They use some sort of gel first and then the pieces of material have to be applied very precicely. I think you are not supposed to use it for an hour or so while it sets, then you can use it and while there might be some tiny bubbles they work themselves out within a day or so and you'll notice at the beginning it feels a bit soft, but then as the gel or whatever it is they use cures it becomes very solid, almost like it's coated in this rubbery material. I used to have them on my iPhone 4, only thing I didn't like was that the glass now is not slippery any more for lack of a better word. I like it that I can slide my finger around with very little resistance and that does change a bit with the Invisishield. But any screen protector changes that a bit and I guess if you were mainly concerned about having a good solid grip you could just get them put on the back and the sides. I think the bumper I use is pretty much what you describe. It's called the Tech21 D3O Impact Band Case for iPhone 5/5S A link to it on Amazon is http://www.amazon.com/Tech21-Impact-Band-Case-iPhone/dp/B009ATWBH2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1391603936&sr=8-2&keywords=Tech+21+iPhone+case Right now, it costs $30 USD. Re: Using an iPhone without a Case
Thank you, everyone, for the thoughtful replies to my question. I never thought my post would elicit so many responses in such a short time. I asked for information about using iPhones without cases because my case recently broke at its structurally weakest spot, and I thought before replacing it I would consider the possibility of using my iPhone in unprotected mode, so to speak. Armed with your opinions and suggestions about how to keep an iPhone safe without resorting to a case, I went to my dealer today to look at cases but also quite seriously thinking of not buying one. I ended up with a new case because I was entitled to one replacement case at no charge during the life of my contract, an option I didn't know I could exercise. Although I have a new case, I may take the iPhone out to see how I like using it that way. Even if I decide to keep it in its case, you have provided a wealth of insights about working with an unclothed iPhone which other users may find helpful down the road. Yours is the kind of advice that makes the VIPhone list so valuable. Re: Using an iPhone without a Case
Cases also offer a better gripping surface. Perhaps it's just something to get used to, but I find myself constantly worrying about dropping an iPhone if it isn't in any case at all. The 4 and 4s aren't as bad since they are thicker, but the 5 and later always feel ready to slide out of my hand. A case gives me something more to grip. Again, it might just be a psychological thing, but there it is. -- Have a great day, Alex mehg...@gmail.com On Feb 4, 2014, at 10:10 PM, Tom Lange wrote: > Hi Craig, > Although I like the idea of using an iPhone without a case, I'm one of those > guys who crams everything but the kitchen sink into various pockets in my > pants, shirts, jackets, et cetera. Hi Craig, Although I like the idea of using an iPhone without a case, I'm one of those guys who crams everything but the kitchen sink into various pockets in my pants, shirts, jackets, et cetera. More often than not I carry my phone in my left front pants pocket, which is also where I keep my keys, a nail clipper and my mini Swiss Army knife. Re: Using an iPhone without a Case
Hi, I think it's pretty difficult to not have any minor scratches on an iPhone 5 , especially the black models. The anodized aluminum just scratches easily. For me, the main reason I put my phone in a case is to maintain its value. I'm ultra careful with my phone but, for most, I don't think just being careful is good enough. At least, not if they want their phone looking like it did when they first opened the box. RE: Using an iPhone without a Case
I have an IPhone 4S right now without a case. However, when I feel the need for a case I use an old victor reader stream case. That allows me to clip it on my belt or somewhere. I like being able to do that when I'm going around the house reading an NLS book. The phone fits reasonably well in the stream case and is easy to get out if I want to remove it. . I don't know what I'm going to do yet when I get a 5S which will happen in the near future. I do like the feel of the naked phone, but want a bit of protection for it and a way to clip it on my person. God bless! I definitely don't like bulky cases. However, I usually wear jeans and I don't like lose clothing so I don't find it very comfortable having my phone in my jeans pocket. Furthermore I have this notion that having it in my pocket where it basically is against my body and where one side of the phone is constantly exposed to 90+ degrees heat must not be so good. I also often want access to my phone when I am walking along or even when I'm at work and therefore I much prefer to have it on my belt. I don't usually sit around at the same desk at work therefore just putting it on my desk is not something I do that often because I know that if I'm in my office upstairs and then I get up to go downstairs or to deal with a customer in my store I just forget to pick up the phone. The case I use on a day-to-day bases is a $6 case from www.Monoprice.com which I posted about before. It's very minimalistic, the part that goes on the phone is made from a hard plastic material and just covers the back and sides. It snaps on securely and then you slide the entire unit into the belt clip unit sort of like sliding a drawer into it's ressess except this slides in with some friction to hold it in place. I can slide the phone in right side up or upside down and, if I want, even with the screen towards my body. I actually prefer it upside down because if I reach down to do something that can be done very easily and comfortably. Re: Using an iPhone without a Case
I have the same approach. Mine is a $25 case from Best Buy that covers the back and sides, and includes a belt clip. I can snap the phone in with the screen covered by the inside of the clip/holster, or facing outward so I can perform some actions while I'm moving around. No, this isn't a water/drop/shock/dust-proof case, but it isn't big and heavy either. My phone spends enough time in my pocket while I'm at home that light and slim still matter, so a Defender or other big case is not for me. Finally, the smaller case lets the phone sit on my dock, something that a large case would prevent. -- Have a great day, Alex mehg...@gmail.com On Feb 4, 2014, at 10:41 AM, Sieghard Weitzel wrote: > Hi Craig, > > Here are my 2 Cents worth. I don't keep them in the same pocket with my keys, coins or pocket knife for example. Smart phones are made to be pretty durable, and obviously, they're meant to be pretty thin and sleek. I just knew I took relatively good care of my phones, and I realized I was placing this very elegant device in a pretty cheap plastic or leather case. I just made the conscious decision that I paid a lot for this phone, and I wanted to enjoy it and not a $20 case. I'm not criticizing anyone who chooses to use a case for their phone. My wife is a very different person, and she views her phone as a tool, like a pen. She doesn't want to have to worry about it, and she wants to be able to just toss it into her purse or any pocket that's handy. For this reason, she has a Otter Box case for it. RE: Using an iPhone without a Case
Hi Craig, Here are my 2 Cents worth.
Good morning, As for me, I just don't like the bulk of a case - a caseless iPhone V fits just perfectly in my pocket, whereas with the case, it if very uncomfortable for me. So far so good in terms of no trauma or drama. I respect others who are concerned about protecting what is a rather valuable asset. Re: Using an iPhone without a Case
I don't use a case either. With the 4 I did because it felt more bulky and cumbersome in my pocket. I had it in a belt clip. To me the 5 and 5s feel a lot more comfortable to just put in a pants or coat pocket. I rarely drop the phone so am not worried about damaging it. My wife on the other hand has it in a case because the black phone is hard to see and she drops and loses things to easily. This has nothing to do with partial vision because she is totally sighted. Re: Using an iPhone without a Case
I have never used cases for my phones except for brief periods as an experiment just because I like the feel of them better without a case. I keep them in a pocket deep enough to assure they aren't going to fall out; I don't necessarily put them in a purse compartment with nothing else but I do put them where I can find them and where they aren't likely to accidentally fall out when I open my purse. I don't particularly worry about not using them in crowded areas, etc. but do make sure I am paying attention to holding on to them. I have had a 3GS, a 4S, and now have a 5 and a 5S. Over the years I've maybe had two drops with no adverse results. But this is a very individual thing; you shouldn't do this if you think you are prone to dropping and accidents in general and you do have to realize that there is always the possibility of an accident. I always have Apple Care for my phones as this is the most convenient for me though I believe there may be other methods of covering for accidents. I know that some would think it unthinkable and irresponsible to not have a case for a phone, but I'm happy with my decision and willing to accept the consequences if I do have an accident. At some times I haven't even had a screen protector though right now I have Speeddots screens on both phones. But if you are a person who feels insecure holding the phone or feels it is slippery in your hand or just has a dread that something may happen each time you pick up the phone, you should go ahead and get a case. I just love the feel of mine without a case. Oh yes, I also do make use of Apple earpods and Bose headphones often so I can opperate the phones without unnecessarily taking them out of a pocket or purse; I also use a bluetooth earpiece sometimes. -- Cheryl I tried and tried to turn over a new leaf. I got crumpled wads of tear-stained paper thrown in the trash! Then God gave me a new heart and life: His joy for my despairing tears! And now, every day: "This I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness." Using an iPhone without a Case
Hello, everyone. The reasons for putting an iPhone in a protectivecase are very good ones, and I don't want to devalue them. However, the iPhone without a case is certainly a more compact an sleek unit. I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has chosen not to use a case. What protective measures do you take with your phone? For instance, do you put in a pocket or purse compartment that no other item occupies? Do you try to avoid using it in crowded areas where the chances of its being dropped are increased? Thank you.
