Maybe he could add an option to hide those buttons when you are not editing, just reading. I don't mind the layout as is. When I open VDR and use dots 1-2-3 chord on Orbit Writer expecting to land on file manager, instead I land on an invisible (according to my sighted wife) row of buttons which VoiceOver describes as about choosing Lowest Level: headings, paragraph, sentence (selected) or edit. Only after moving right past these invisible options each time can I get to what I normally want - file manager or add new document.
