Subject: Layout for Hidden Country Bluetooth Mini-Keyboard [was Re:
bluetooth miny keyboard]

Hi Jenifer,

Your question about the layout of the Hidden Country Bluetooth Mini-Keyboard
prompted me to search the viphone list archives, since I recall that Geoff
Waaler posted the layout for this keyboard. You did, indeed, order a Hidden
Country keyboard, since I found that post first. First, I'll just state
that if you've managed to pair your Bluetooth keyboard, you can always find
out what the keys are by turning on keyboard help mode. Even if you don't
know where your Control and Option (or Alt) keys are located, in order to
press Control-Option-K to enter this mode, where you'll be told each key and
its action by VoiceOver when you press that key or key combination, or even
if your keyboard does not have a Control or Option key, it is possible to
enter this mode by using the touch screen to navigate to the VoiceOver
Practice gestures area in Settings > General > Accessibility > VoiceOver
while the keyboard is paired. This has the same effect as entering keyboard
help mode with Control-Option-K, and you can leave keyboard help mode by
navigating away from the VoiceOver Practice area using touch screen gestures
instead of pressing the "escape" key to end this mode.

I'll paste in Geoff's post giving the layout of the Bear Motion Bluetooth
Mini-Keyboard, which I've copied from the Google Groups web page for the
viphone list. I believe this is the brand that you ordered from Hidden
Country (or shop.hidcountry, com) at the time, because they were also
supplying this keyboard through Amazon. According to my hazy recollection,
Geoff ordered this from Amazon, and Andrea ordered hers from Hidden Country,
but the layout was the same. I also recall that Ricardo Walker much later
did a podcast on the Bear Motion Bluetooth Mini-Keyboard, which turned out
to be similar to the layout of the ThinkGeek TK-421 mini-keyboard that I
reviewed. If Geoff's description is relevant for your keyboard, which I
believe it is, then in order to access the arrow keys you need to press the
Fn key together with the a, s, d, or w key. Hopefully, any future searchers
will be able to quickly find this information through a Mail Archive search,
now that the viphone list has a secondary archive page at:

http://www.mail-archive.com/viphone@googlegroups.com/

Geoff's post with the keyboard info appears below my signature. He actually
describes the physical layout of the keyboard and where you can switch it
on, so this should be better than just giving you a map of keyboard function
combinations. Geoff uses "F" to indicate the Fn key in key press
combinations. There is both a left Fn key and a right Fn key on the bottom
row, so you can use either one in these combinations.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Greetings,

Esther's recent reference to the escape key reminded me that maybe I can
spare a few people the modicum of frustration I experienced locating this.
Its great that so many are generous with their time creating podcasts and
tutorials, but I'm sure there are many others who abhor time consuming
podcasts as much as I when concise instructions will suffice -- honestly
reading lists such as this one I often wonder how blind people ever managed
to use the bath room, pick their noses or put on clothing before the days
of podcasts lasting hours describing every solitary detail, but I digress.
I don't know about any other mini keyboards, so the following is only
necessarily applicable for the Bare Motion Mini bt keyboard. The link for
this product at the US Amazon site is:

Assuming the space bar is toward you, the USB port (used for charging only)
is in front of the 3 and the power switch is in front of the 5. The left
position (toward the USB port) is power on.
The paring button is just above the 8 -- you'll notice a tiny recessed place
where you can put a finger nail if you don't bite them. To pair you'd power
the keyboard on and go into settings -> general -> bluetooth, and verify
that bluetooth is turned on. Remain in that window, and hold down the pair
button on the keyboard for a couple seconds. After a few moments the mini
keyboard will appear in your Bluetooth settings area. When you double tap,
a prompt is presented instructing you to enter a four digit number on the
keyboard, followed by the return key.
