Hi Denise, I was going to suggest something similar to the below using

what's been said already, feel free to ask specific questions and I'll get to
them unless someone else beats me to it.

Re: braille displays with iPad

2012-06-25 Thread Garth Humphreys
I would suggest adding "Containers" to your rotor in Settings, accessibility,
Voice Over. I don't use braille however I will give you the description of how
it works with a bluetooth keyboard and hope you can do the translation to a
braille display.
Once you have added containers to your rotor you can use the up and left or
right arrows to adjust the rotor and select containers. Now when you press
either the up or down arrow you will jump between the major sections of the
mail app. This lets you get very quickly between different places on the mail
app.

You can have a listen to a podcast I am putting together at the moment. The
dropbox link below is an episode where I cover some of the iPad specific
gestures and discuss containers. As it happens it was with the mail app that I
gave the demo. The podcasts is about gestures, not keyboards but the principles
are the same.

hi,
it is easy to understand that you can control the iphone with the Braille
Display. But what about the ipad? for example, using the focus, how do you
control the ipad reading mail since things are in columns? it seems like you
would have to have some interaction with the ipad to highlight things. also,
when reading in read2go and you need to switch pages, how do you land at the
top of the next page.
what are the best keys for navigating the focus and ipad or iphone? right now i
am using the older unit to see if i'm interested in getting the new unit.
thanks.

Hello Grant,

I think there are some techniques for working with email via your Braille
display that can be difficult to explain/conceive via email.

So, if you would like, I will be happy to give you a call either via telephone
or Skype to we can go through the process, together.

Contact me, off-list if you would like to do this, OK?

Re: Questions about iOS and braille displays

2012-05-02 Thread David Chittenden
Hello,

This is one of the big differences between the one-dimensional traditional
accessible interface that we blind people are use to (serial), and the
two-dimensional interface that the sighted use. The braille display gives only
one dimension of access. The iOS touch-screen gives two-dimensions of access.

You need to use the touch-screen to get the two-dimensions of access.

Re: Questions about iOS and braille displays

2012-05-02 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hi.

I will try and answer the one about mail and what I do when using a braille
display although use a Eurobraille.

1.

If there are a lot of mesages in the thread, (and you want to read messages in
order)?

Make sure you open the message first either by using the routing cells on the
display or double tapping your I phone screen (whatever is easier for you).

2. If you do space bar L, you will land at the edit box. If you do not want to
read all the messages, press the routing cell on your display.

3. You will notice that the button has changed to cancel.

4. Move across with your Joice Stick and double tap each message you do not
want to read.

5. When all messges have been selected, chord 4 5 6 (space bar needs to be
pressed together). You will land on a choice of buttons. Labelled as Mark,
move, delete or refresh. Find the delete and press your routing cell. All
messages be deleted.

Otherwise, when in your inbox, find the edit field, press your routing cell.
without opening each message, double tap chord right and find the delete
button. All messages be deleted.

Hope this is useful for anyone who has roblems reading mail with their braille
display.

Kawal.

Re: Questions about iOS and braille displays

2012-05-01 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi Grant,

When I Use a braille display, I always have the iPhone within easy reach so
that I can perform the tasks that work better on the screen with the screen and
those that work better with the display on the display. That way, I have the
best of both worlds.

Best,
Anna

Questions about iOS and braille displays

2012-05-01 Thread Grant Hardy

Hi all,

There's a couple of tasks which are easy to perform from the
touch screen of my iPhone, but which I have not found equivalent
ways of doing using my braille display. Specifically, I'm using a
BrailleNote Apex BT.

The first task is to toggle editing functions when you are in a
long list of items, without losing your place in the list. For
example, suppose you were reviewing a long list of Email messages
in the Mail app, and decided that you would like to mark a couple
for deletion. On the touch screen, you would tap on the Edit
button in the top-right corner, and then tap roughly in the
center of the screen to move back to the list in approximately
the same spot. But on a braille device, if you perform the
command, say, to move to the first element on the screen, and
then move forward a couple of elements to find the Edit button,
then if you kept moving forward you would arrive at the top of
the list again and you'd have to move forward several elements to
find the item you were on before. I hope this makes some kind of
sense. I am guessing this is the best you can do with a braille
device?

The other task is to force VoiceOver to regain focus. Sometimes,
when I go to the home screen, or review the status bar, VoiceOver
loses its focus. The previous and next element commands do not
work. It's not a big deal when using the touch screen because you
can just tap manually somewhere to get VoiceOver to focus upon
that element, after which normal navigation resumes. But on a
braille device, I haven't found an equivalent.

I hope these make some sense. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Grant
