I figured it out. I can now read my emails on my phone. I don't know how to compose an email or reply to an email yet, but at least I can read them. That screen that says mail, calendar, contacts, etc., is a set of switches that you turn on so that the Mail app collects that information. Hi to all. I signed into the email app on my iPhone using my google account info for a minute or to. I got to some weird screen with mail, calendar, contacts, but I couldn't figure out how to actually read any of my email messages. I hit a cancel button then it looks like I'll have to retype in my email and password. I looked on the web and I found out about putting your email address and password in my phone's settings and something about using IMAP verses pop-3 or something. I'll be contacting apple sometime tomorrow.
