RE: i o s and visually impaired users

2012-09-28 Thread Rose Combs
Personally when searching for apps, I prefer using iTunes rather than the
phone, that said I generally perform all updates from the phone and if I am
away from the home computer I will use the phone in the App store. It
probably has more to do with using a real keyboard for me.

Hi Ed and others. I actually answered my own dumb A** question last night. I
went into the App Store, changed the roter to headings, and sure enough, I
was able to navigate the search results properly. Before I did this, I used
to press and or hold down either side of the screen to navigate it, but 99%
of the time Voiceover didn't read the next or previous search result. So
thanks. It would be nice if we could tell our iPhones to keep it on headings
when we're in the App Store. Or like on the Mac, set an activity so that the
roter is automatically on headings. Thanks again.

Hi Ed. When you say navigate the search results in the App Store by headings,
do you mean rotate your fingers until the roter says headings? If so, after
you've set the roter to headings, how do you navigate the headings?

The single-finger vertical flick navigates to the next item set via the rotor.
So, if rotor is characters, vertical flick navigates one character at a time.

The media hates success in general. You cannot tear someone or something down

APple is really trying to screw the llittle person. No wonder people are
always looking for the negative. Of course just my opinion.

RE: i o s and visually impaired users

2012-09-27 Thread Ron Pelletier
Hey Jim,

The IPhone has been digging into the Blackberry market like you wouldn't
believe. Up until now, Blackberry has been holding the business market and
the IPhone was seen as being for the rest of us. Of course, as a Canadian I
am a little sad that Blackberry, one of our biggest companies, is losing a
big part of the market. Don't be surprised that the media and other big
companies, huge Blackberry users, will bash anything that disturbs their
comfort zone just like we, as blind users, have been complaining about the
changes in IOS 6. It is change and, no matter how good it is, it disturbs
people and spills a lot of ink.
Let's be positive and wait a bit and watch Apple float up to the top just as
they have in the past. They have the technology, the money and the desire
to do that. After all, it only makes good business sense.

I think that this list is the best representative of our users and we need
to be positive, continue to report bugs to a company that, up until now, has
been listening to us. Finally, we have some power and we need to use it
wisely.

personally, the only problem I have had with the new look app store, is when
it has a load of search results to display. where as in the old app store,

apart from this, I have also had no problems with the new app store.

Hello Shaun, yes rotate your fingers until you hear headings, then you flick
one finger up to go up the headings to the top of the page, and flick one
finger down to go down the page towards the bottom of the page. Any of the
options in the roter are performed with either a flick up or down, I personally
find the roter awesome and very useful. I probably use the roter more then any
other feature on the iDevices.

Why do you say the blindness community is all in a huff over the App
Store? I read the article, and they only refer to one blind person
complaining about the AppStore. I haven't seen any other complaints
surrounding the AppStore other than those that existed prior to the
release of IOS 6. I don't think one person equates to the entire
blindness community.

I do agree though that sometimes these companies are damned if they do
and damned if they don't. If they don't make enough changes then they're
labeled as stagnant or not being innovative enough. If they make too
many changes then people complain about having to learn a whole new
interface.

I agree. People are uncomfortable with change until they adapt. But, if you
then take those nice changes away, they really squawk.

Re: i o s and visually impaired users

2012-09-26 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Why do you say the blindness community is all in a huff over the App
Store? I read the article, and they only refer to one blind person
complaining about the AppStore. I haven't seen any other complaints
surrounding the AppStore other than those that existed prior to the
release of IOS 6. I don't think one person equates to the entire
blindness community.

I do agree though that sometimes these companies are damned if they do
and damned if they don't. If they don't make enough changes then they're
labeled as stagnant or not being innovative enough. If they make too
many changes then people complain about having to learn a whole new
interface.

2012-09-26 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
I don't think the store has been down graded. Nothing wrong with it. I just
used it without thinking about it. People do not like change and probably
Apple will do something although they are obliged to do nothing. I hope they
don't think that visually impaired people are ungrateful. Sometimes I think
visually impaired people are very ungrateful and do not appreciate how much
work is put in to develop something. This is my opinion so please don't start
arguing with me as it is how it can come across sometimes to me.

2012-09-26 Thread Jesus Garcia
I would echo the comments regarding how simple the new store is, I have had
no problems purchasing, searching, or updating apps. I think some of the
confusion some may be experiencing has to do with the fact that under the
old system the app download progress and the ability to open the app once it
had finished downloading and installing was separate from the store and now
it is combined. But folks that hold true for all users, we cannot say the
store is not accessible, anyone can say they don't like the new store, but
not in my opinion that it is not accessible.

 aren't
any big issues with the app store and I am not sure why the blind community
is all in a huff over it.

I don't find the app store or iTunes harder to use. Also with the way the
app store is handled on Apple's end they can make improvements on the fly
without a huge app update, they can just do it over the server. There aren't

Re: i o s and visually impaired users

2012-09-26 Thread James Mannion
Using it is no problem and I think over all it is an upgrade. I can't
help but wonder if the reason it was covered was because it was
another opportunity to put a negative spin on the IPhone and things
related by the media. The media and the press, in my view, they seem
to absolutely hate the IPhone. They hate its success and they are
doing everything they can to turn the tide against it. Sure you can
find a few positive articles, but they are from a specific collection
of people and sources. So they found what they could present as
another trashing opportunity.
